This CD is very original. Everytime I hear a No Doubt song on the radio its always different because I cant compare one song of theirs to another they all sounds very different and very original. "Hella Good" is a really cool dance song. This is the first song I ever danced to in public = a club. "Hey Baby" is an amazing upbeat dance song that puts you in a really good mood everytime you hear it. "Making Out" this song is really really really catchy and really disco sounding. I love this song. The first time I heard this CD, this was my favorite song. "Underneath it All" The first time I heard the whole CD I disliked this song the most. It was really boring for my taste but it grew on me so much that its one of my favorites now. Lady Saw is awesome in it. "Detective" I love this song. Its catchy as hell. I played this whole CD to a friend thats never heard of No Doubt and he liked this one the best. "Dont let me Down" Im surprised this song didnt make it as big when it was on the radio. Im totally in love with this song. Its original its fun to sing a long to and Gwen sounds really good. "Start the Fire" I played this song to my mom and she doesnt speak any English and she liked it a lot. This song has a unique reggae sound to it and a clever unique hook. "Running" Hands down my favorite track. Im just disapointed that this song went nowhere on the radio. "In my Head" The beginning is a bit funny and wierd but I love the rest of the song. At one point it sounds like your listening to The Cure. "Platinum Blonde Life" this song sounds like its a Blondie song. Gwen sounds really good. You can hear shes trying to sound like Debbie Harry but she sounds amazing. I love this song its one of the few rock songs on the album. "Waiting Room" Hmmmm.... Prince and Gwen sound really really good together. This song is very very different. Its not catchy at all but their voices together sound so good that it really makes the song shine. "Rock Steady" This song is really relaxing, really soothing. Gwens vocals are so infectious in this song and it has a nice tropical feel to it. Its a song that you'll love to listen to while getting a massage or relaxing in bed.
Free Music Review: Rock on No Doubt! Hit: 5 Stars
I was a bit disappointed after No Doubt's last album, but eventually liked it (it took awhile to grow on me). I always liked it when No Doubt had a lot of up-tempo songs instead of slow ones. This cd is just what I would have hoped for. No Doubt have returned to their roots, while changing their sound as well. There are a lot of electronic sounds in the album, and they complement Gwen's gorgeous voice perfectly. Here are the tracks: 1. INTRO: A brief excerpt of the chorus of "Rock Steady," the last song. 2. HELLA GOOD: A great uptempo dance song. The Neptunes helped write this one. It is one of the best, probably my second favorite. 3. HEY BABY: The first single, this one actually took awhile to grow on me, but now I love it! Very infectious. 4. MAKING OUT: Another fun, uptempo track. Produced by William Orbit. Instantly likeable, I think this will be the next single. 5. UNDERNEATH IT ALL: A slower, reggae-sounding song. A little repetitive, but good. 6. DETECTIVE: This one's my favorite. It's really fun and instantly catchy. The chorus is so cool and will have you singing along. 7. DON'T LET ME DOWN: This sounds like it could have come out of the eighties. It is a really good uptempo rock song. 8. START THE FIRE: This is the only song that I don't like all that much. Another slow, reggae beat, and very repetitive lyrics, it's kind of boring. 9. RUNNING: This is a really cool ballad. It's very innovative sounding. The music, especially at the beginning, sounds exactly like the music to any of the old nintendo gameboy games, I swear! 10. IN MY HEAD: This is a really cool song and is funny to me for some reason. The beat is really cool. 11. PLATINUM BLONDE LIFE: This is the most hard-rock sounding song and is a welcome return to the sounds of Tragic Kingdom. It kinda sounds like something Hole would do. Really good. 12. WAITING ROOM: The is the one they did with Prince, and it's practically a duet with him. As a fan of Prince's, I really enjoy this song. It's just got this really slinky sound to it. Irresistable. 13. ROCK STEADY: This is a pretty slow song, and is very catchy. Not one of my faves, but good. ~ The cd's enhanced with the video for "Hey Baby," a behind the scenes video, and a screensaver. Lyrics included.

I didn't think it could be done, but No Doubt have brought the early 1980's into the present. If you lived through the early 80's and saw the dawn of MTV and witnessed the birth of New Wave, then I would think you'd like "Rock Steady". The first thing that struck me is how the sounds used here reminded me of the early New Wave music I grew up with (and so did Gwen and the rest of the band). Unlike many of the other reviewers here, I think "Rock Steady" is another jewel in No Doubt's crown. All the songs are approximately four minutes or less, there's a good deal of variation in the songs, they don't copy the past as much as they borrow it and make it theirs, all the songs are pretty memorable and catchy. What else could I want in a cd? Plenty of hits are here if radio is willing, like "Hella Good", "Hey Baby", "Making Out", "Underneath It All", "Detective", "Start The Fire" and "In My Head". Many of the songs reminded me of other bands that I grew up with and enjoyed like The Cars (Only In My Head), Prince (Waiting Room), UB40 (Start The Fire, Rock Steady, Underneath It All), The Specials/Madness (Making Out, Detective, Don't Let Me Down). No Doubt borrow, not steal, the past and tinker with it to make it their own, and I think the results are very pleasing. Also add the stellar list of producers like Prince, Ric Ocasek (The Cars), Nellee Hooper (Sould II Soul, Massive Attack, Madonna), William Orbit (Madonna) and you've got a recipe for great music. Gwen's lyrics are clever, though they may not be as personal as on "Return Of Saturn" or "Tragic Kingdom", but I don't think the band wanted to do that this time. The cd sounds exuberant and upbeat, and it sounds like a tribute to the 1980's which was musically irreverant and experimental for a time. The enhanced features were interesting too. Particularly Gwen's narration of how "Rock Steady" was made and came together. Plus you get the video for "Hey Baby" which is entertaining. All in all, I can't understand why so many reviewers don't appreciate this cd.

Rock Steady totally rocks! With instant classics such as the K-roq (Los Angeles)smash, "Don't Let me Down" and the smooth ska/reggae infused "Underneath it All" featuring Lady Saw, (The albums two biggest highlights), You can be sure this Cd will be a smash. This album features a wide range of musical style, beginning with the reggae dancehall hit "Hey Baby" to the ska influenced "Underneath it all" to the beautiful, sweet, melodic tune of "Running" to the more Hard-core Rock, guitar infused "Making out" and "Platinum BLonde Life", to the scattered yet connected jungle-like pop beats of the Prince collaboration "Waiting Room". Additional highlights on this album include "Detective" and "Rock Steady". This CD is a must-have! Now, to all of the reviewers stating the lack of depth in the lyrics, you have to see past that. The music itself is totally awesome. All of the songs have lyrical depth, just some more than others. Granted, songs such as "Hella Good" and the title track "Rock Steady" are less lyrically deep than others, however, "running" "Underneath it all" "Waiting Room" and others well make up for it. Additionally, if you can past the slight lack of depth in a few songs, you will see that musically, this is fantastic album! And it would be so easy for No Doubt to make "Tragic Kingdom 2" and be gauranteed an instant success. That would be selling out. They have found a sound (Tragic Kingdom) that sells for them, but they are moving on...at least for now. They are doing what interests them now, and that is not selling out. To be honest, I am in love with this album to no end, and am certain that you all will also. I think it is worth giving the album a chance. The only weak point on this album is "Start the fire" and even that song is very good. Overall, I would give this album an A and hope you all will as well.
Free Music Review: Don't get put off by "Hey Baby" Hit: 5 Stars
I'm actually quite surprised by the number of negative customer reviews for "Rock Steady". Musically it's quite a departure from their trademark ska sound but it's still the same energetic No Doubt we all love. Despite what some may say most of the album isn't even tailor-made for top-40 radio. It doesn't hurt to experiment but essentially it's still the same hard-rock/pop sounding, laid back No Doubt.I have to admit thought that I was put off from buying their latest album at first because of "Hey Baby". Simply put it's the stupidest, most pointless song they ever made. Gwen and Bounty Killer are about as good of a combination as oil and water. Luckily that's the only skippable track. The good old ska songs we all love are still there, like "Underneath It All", "Dont Let Me Down", and "Start the Fire". Although what really attracted me to the album is that it's largely produced by Nellee Hooper, Mark "Spike" Stent, and William Orbit (all of Bjork, Massive Attack, and Madonna fame). So if you're a fan of these producers, chances are you'll like "Rock Steady". Hooper dominates most of the album's production. Though Gwen's lyrics have never been that deep they are fun to listen to. The songs are set in a much happier tone than in their last album "Return of Saturn". Songs like "Hella Good", "Platinum Blonde Life" and "Rock Steady" are examples of Gwen's happiness and inner peace in finding love. As opposed to the dark, depressing, love-angst lyrics in "Return of Saturn". Another highlight is No Doubt's collaboration with Prince on the love song "Waiting Room". It has that drop of Prince-ness on it with that electric guitar in the beginning, but it feels like an equal duet with a very catchy little melody. I really didn't think they could top "Return of Saturn" but I was wrong, this is their best yet.
