No Doubt haven't exactly been the most prolific in the charts but singles they have released have remained steadfast and memorable - this trait sets Stefani and co. aprt from the rest of the pack. With really only two big albums to lift hits from (Tragic Kingdom and Rock Steady), the rest of which average to weak selling, it is suprising to see so many great trax on here. You know them all but shout out has to go to hthe new single It's My LIfe.....a fantastically gutsy performance by Gwen and a great hommage to the original. Don't Speak is the obvious big ballad but really Hellagood and Hey Baby stand out as more credible trax. Top track is the skaprock sound of Just A Girl....a powerfully boisterous and rebellious performance from Stefani with tongue firmly in cheek. The mixed up track listing allows you to listen to each track on its own merits but it is interesting to see chronologically how the song-writing and musical production of the group has evolved. Rock Steady definitely is the group at its apogee, and therefore this is a timely release to remind us where No Doubt have come from and poses us for the next chapter of their career. Rather like Brit-group Texas, No Doubt have not been afraid to take risks in their musical direction and haven't alienated their fans. Good thing. Woulda been great to see Makin Out released as a single and put on here...one of their best trax ever. Pity. For now, relish, enjoy and all those other nice words. Great Xmas partay cd (didn't really get the Return of Saturn album but the singles here actually fare well, specially x-girlfriend). Nice one.
