Free Music Review: Nonpoint Make It Hurt So Good

When you think about the fact that Nonpoint landed on the scene in 2000, at a time when nu-metal was at it's saturation point and a new band with a mis-spelled name was coming out each week, it's quite impressive that they are still around today. I mean, how many bands that emerged from that era can you name that are still making music today? Not only that, but Nonpoint have successfully burned through two major record deals, and still show no sign of slowing down, and their fourth album, "To The Pain" is evidence of that.
Just a little over a year after their last album, "Recoil" was released, Nonpoint have returned rather swiftly with a new album, courtesy of Bieler Bros. Records (Skindred, Slaves On Dope). Four albums, three record labels, and they still have a career? Nonpoint should be getting five-stars for effort alone. Any normal band would have given up by this point, as the odds are increasingly stacked against Nonpoint. Where does their sound fit in? Surely not with the pop-punk/emo scene, and definitely not with the "Headbanger's Ball" crowd either. Nonpoint now officially belong to the same genre that I place Sevendust in: working-class hard-rock. These guys work their butts off with great music being the only product. They will probably never sell a million copies of one album. They will never pack a stadium, but they command your respect.
Ok, enough of telling you how special this band is, let's get "To The Pain." A lot of people will listen to this album the first time and think "More of the same." I had pretty much the same feelings on my first spin, but it grows on you, and unlike other releases (by other bands), it feels complete. Instead of being four of five good songs surrounded by filler, each song on this album is strong enough to stand alone. Musically, it doesn't take them in a new direction, but it definitely re-establishes their signature sound, especially if you were someone who was worried about them softening up with the previous two releases. Regardless, "To The Pain" is just Nonpoint doing what they do best. It has elements from "Statement," "Development" and "Recoil" all rolled into one, and despite the fact that they aren't on a major label, the production still sounds as strong and crisp as before, and the band are just as tight as before. If you loved Nonpoint before, you'd be hard-pressed to put this album down.
