Free Music Review: Simply astonishing
Hit: 5 Stars

This truly is the Best Album of the Year. Norah Jones has landed a sucker punch right in the face of conventional pop music. This is the best alubm to come along since Josh Groban's self-titled debut. It has been a top ten seller, most of the time number 1, here on amazon.com, and deservedly so.

1. Don't Know Why is one of the most infectious songs I've ever heard. The music is gentle but it's so a great song. And best of all it introduces Norah's sultry voice, almost like a drug, but not addicting in the bad way.
2. Seven Years is one of my favorite songs. It's country blue grass fused with jazz, like the whole album. It's another showcase of Norah's voice, which every song is, in a different way every time. This, like every song, deserves the accolades for all of the great songs she gets to sing.
3. Cold Cold Heart is a great cover. It's Hank Williams best known song given a complete overhaul. Not like it needed one, but it's very bluesy; she can do it all! I love the stand up bass in the beginning.
4. Feelin' The Same Way is another one of my favorites. It's one of the speediest songs on the album, but the brushes on the snares give it the jazzy sound. The words are beautiful.
5. Come Away With Me is my favorite song on the whole album. It sounds so much like a beautiful lullaby. It's gentle but it says so much. Norah has written a wonderful song. This is such a deep song, one of the best love songs ever. The piano is airy, her voice is breezy and it's just perfect. This could've easily beaten Don't Know Why for record of the year if nominated.
6. Shoot The Moon gets us back to the bluegrassy sound. Once again, the brushes on the snares give it that infectious beat you just can't forget. I love the gentle whisp in her voice.
7. Turn Me On is hard core bluesy. And man does she do it well. This has some of the funnest lyrics on the whole album. It's a great testiment to love.
8. Lonestar could be played at the Grand Ole Oprey and fit right in. It's got that great walking, one-two beat. And the stand up bass reprises its role.
9. I've Got To See You Again sounds like a tango to me. I love the drawling violin. This is a very sensual, seductive song. It has a great hypnotic beat. The layered vocals are absolutely delicious.
10. Painter Song is as fun as Turn Me On. It's a great quasi story song, like Don McClean's Vincent (Starry, Starry Night), covered wonderfully by Josh Groban. The brush stroke sound effect is awesome. The accordion is great, gives the song a very Paris bistro kind of atmosphere. And did i mention she has an amazing voice!?! It's just too bad this song has to be so short.
11. One Flight Down, and by song 11 on a 14 song album, you'd expect it to start losing some steam, but that is definitely not the case. There are so many songs where voice and words fit perfectly and this is one of them. She's got great range and damn near perfect pitch. It's another one of those songs that you hate to be so short.
12. Nightingale is quite possibly the best song on the album. The piano is the best, the gutiar is the best, the brushes onthe snares, ooh, how I love them so, and the lyrics are the best. I think I shall say this is the best song on the album. It's got a great guitar solo, soft but it'll make you air-guitar along every time.
13. The Long Day Is Over has so few words to it, but it's such a beautiful song. The echoing guitar is gorgeous. By this point in the album, I want to start it over again already. And once again, like so many great Beatles tunes, this one is so short. It seems that all the great ones are. This could be an award winning poems, it really could. Probably the simplest, but best lyrics of any song on the album.
14. The Nearness Of You is another great cover. Hoagy Carmichael would be nothing but proud. Norah's voice and a piano. There is a God and he gave us a rwal treasure in Norah Jones. This is as simple as a song can get, but how can it be so good??? It's absolutely amazing and just bleeds passion.

Norah Jones is amazing. She's beautiful and her voice is just as gorgeous. This truly is album of the year if any album has ever been deemed worthy of such an honor. Norah Jones is just like Josh Groban, an absolutely wonderful break from the monotonous pop and neo-punk "revolution" garbage we are bombarded with every day. It's impossible to escape from the ad nauseum "saviors" of rock that spring up like weeds. Good Charlotte, Blink-182 and all those other meaningless names for no talent bands of noise makers. The White Sripes, Coldplay, The Hives, The Vines, have nothing caompared to Norah Jones. She has more musical talent in one of her toenails than all of the bands in their whole bodies put together. It's cliche, but it's the truth. We need more Norah Joneses and a lot less Ramones rip-offs.

There is a great mistake going around. Just like everyone thinks Josh Groban's debut is classical, everyone thinks this is jazz, well, you're all wrong. THIS IS NOT A JAZZ ALBUM. She has created the jazz/bluegrass/blues?country/pop genre all herself. This is not Ella or Nina, nor is she Linda Eder or Cher. She is Norah Jones. If it puts you to sleep, then good, you won't be an insomniac for the rest of your life. If it bores you, then good, you have a chance to go find your real musical taste. Any way you look at it, this is a great album. It has done great things and will continue to do more. I give Norah Jones' debut, Come Away With Me, the highest recommendation I could possibly give and I'm standing on a 60 foot ladder. It's amazing!

The Little Willies

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross
