Free Music Review: If you like Norah Jones, then you have to get this one...

I doubt that too many folks reading this review haven't heard the smooth, melodic voice of Norah Jones, so I won't spend any time describing it to you. However, you haven't heard the best that Norah Jones has to offer until you've heard her on SACD! For starters the quality of the SACD version of the album is apparent even when played on a conventional CD player. The SACD just seems to contain more audible information...there are subtleties that I notice on the SACD that I didn't notice on the original CD release. I'm not sure if this is due to the audio masters being transferred at a higher bit rate or if it is just due to slightly different mixing, but the results are welcomed!
If that isn't good enough then wait until you pop this little SACD jewel into a full-blown SACD 5.1 system - Wow! The music envelops you, and on a few of the tracks you even feel as if Norah herself is giving you a private concert. The effect is not overdone, just gratifying.
The day that this SACD arrived in the mail I listened to it four times straight and never felt tired of listening nor did I want to switch to another disc. Even the few tracks that I had sometimes skipped in the past while listening to the conventional CD were now more intriguing. If you like the "Come Away With Me" CD then you will love the SACD that much more.

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross
