Free Music Review: What happened?
Hit: 5 Stars

To all you Norah fans, I can just see your indignant faces growing red with anger as you await my critisism of one of your favourite singers.Well rest assured for I have now become one of you and have no intentions of doing anything of the sort.

Because the title refers not to Norah, but to me.

Once upon a time I heard 'Come away with me'.Now to be honest all I heard was the off key drawling that sounded like someone was dying, hoarse with thirst while they sang to non-existent music that was far too low key for my taste.

When the second track was released I was no more appeased by the "Don't know why I didn't come" that to me, seemed to have been drawled with almost no emotion, as if she were singing to a wall.

But then it kept on playing on the -get this- jazz station that I frequent and while I cursed it loudly infront of my approving anti-norah peers, It actually grew on me.It was then that I rummaged through some old gifts of mine that I had thrown away in the attic, and found the whole album. It was here where I listened to it , enjoying the slow rythemic tures that we all know and love.

I kept this to myself, until one day I was caught red handed lip synching to a jones song to the horror of my peers who couldn't believe what they were hearing.

Now my love of Jonses talented music is known to all, and I've actually managed to convert a few pals along the way. The cd is now the trophy of my prized collection and I urge you to give this a few tries before you give up.

I really believe that Norah's music requires 'developing a taste' for it.But once you do, believe me, you'll wonder 'why you didn't come'.

Free Music Review: Pure, soft, sweet, melodious Magic!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Listening to her, you immediately become aware of the soft smoothness of her voice, and the effortless, sultry ways in which she weaves the melodies of her songs. Some she sings in that unhurried way of a Billie Holiday, mixed with that smoothe jazzy style of a Diana Krall. A little bit of Macy Gray (without the edge) comes through as well, but make no mistake, EVERYTHING is Norah Jones. In other words, this young woman has all the qualities of some of music's best female vocal artists in the type of songs she sings.

Her songs carry the full range of a little Country, Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and lullabies (if you doubt me, just listen to her "I've Got To See You Again"). They are pure comfort and relaxation; the kind you feel good to just let wash away the hustle and bustle of a hectic day. The kind your soul seeks out for calm. The alternative to headache medicine.

Although her songs can be listened to for the sheer joy and pleasure of them, they could also serve as background music that speaks peacefully and non-threateningly to your surroundings, and you'll know they will have started working their MAGIC on you, when unconsciously you find yourself singing or humming their melodies. Bobbing and swaying your head slightly is also confirmation.

Babies, likewise, will find it easy to fall asleep from the gentle and soothing sound of her voice. It'll be a natural lullaby for them.

Considering this artist is only in her early twenties, and has already made her singing debut with such a positive and graceful entrance, she has only given us a lovable sample of what's to come. Like a good wine, she will only get BETTER as she matures!!!

Free Music Review: Talent beyond her years
Hit: 5 Stars

Degustibus et coloribus non est disputandum, but the people who are giving this album 1-star ratings are obviously either a) deaf, b) insane or c) a combination of both. While it is certainly chic to bash the latest craze, every once in a blue moon there is a hype that is everything it's cracked up to be. As much as Norah would probably object to being called a hype, she is one of the few who can live up to that ignomous billing.

A lot of complaints seem to stem from a misunderstanding of this album. People have heard that Norah is 'the next big thing' and they go out and buy this, expecting some golden-voiced, high-emotion technical masterwork. Instead, they get an album that is so subtly understated that it has that rare quality of growing on you as you listen to it. Be gentle with these songs, don't dismiss them if they don't grab you at first... their style is more that of a gentle, constant tugging then the rollercoaster rides that the music industry so commonly tries to shove down our throats nowadays.

For me, the hardest thing to believe when listening to this album is that Norah is only 22. There's no other young artist out there with anywhere near the same potential. The mere fact that people feel to need to compare her to aging legends (and claim the latter are still better - usually rightly so), speaks volumes about the heights she has achieved at this young age.

If you buy any album at all this year, make it this one. Just keep your expectations in check. This is truly gold (which, incidentally, is the title of a great album by one of Norah's favourite artists : Ryan Adams), but don't go and expect to stumble into Fort Knox.

Free Music Review: Listen with headphones! Beautiful voice and music!
Hit: 5 Stars

Norah Jones, whether her album sales, critics or popularity are involved or not, has done something that few can do; she impressed me. Who am I? Nobody special, but it takes a lot to impress me these days where music is concerned.

I am not a fan of "pop" music; most of it is contrived, cliche and boring. This album was a huge success, won a grammy and sold millions, but lots of albums do that and don't sound too good too me.

Most music these days just sounds like everything else in it's genre and I don't care for much of it. This album broke the seams, blurred the edges and made it hard to classify. It's a jazzy, bluesy, (I think I read country but I don't know about that, although I agree that the guitar is influenced by early country artists), soul-filled expose of what a group of musicians can accomplish when they don't worry about what others are doing and just set out to make a good album.

The mix of songs is perfect and Norah's vocals are entrancing, they just suck you in.

I said "Listen with headphones" and here is why; the intricate musicianship on this album is amazing, the slight bend of a guitar string, the tap of a pedal, the back beat on a soft cymbal, all of this adds to the sultry, smooth sound that encapsulates this album.

I can't pick 1 or 2 good songs; the whole album is absolutely fantastic. An experiment in musical restraint, they use just enough of the instruments, the vocals, they never go overboard. I think that is the true treat in this album; the thunderous minimalism.

A great album and deserving of all the attention it has received.
