Free Music Review: Obesity Causes Diseases
Hit: 5 Stars

At times when McDonalds-ism rules even our taste of music, Norah Jones offers the listeners an alternative. Compared to the popular, greasy, cheap, fattening foods (which tastes good), she is the new diet in town. I could compare her to a professional chef who uses exotic spices to create a dish that is somehow beautifully mellow and delicious.
Some reviewers state that her voice is not good, or that she is monotone - this is not true. Her voice is so rare and perfected, it is like platinum. Her rise to success brought me satisfaction, knowing that there are many people, who have class and good taste, as oppose to followers of the hype. It is the reassurance of the healthy dieters to know the existence of people who want better food. I always wondered and worried if fast food was the path music would take. People are so hyper, angry, and so entranced with the ______, ______, ______, and all the songs trying so hard to be different just to gain attention. Do we want the music world to follow the gainers of attention who are talking about killing, hurting, stealing, sleeping with as many people as possible, causing trouble, taking drugs as a life style, being lazy, hating, cursing, biting, and making life only more meaningless? Do we want to give these people awards because of their popularity? When Norah Jones came out, her album gave what the judges wanted, music for its beauty and magnificence, not works of graffiti. She is like a sparkle of light that gives people hope for a better path for music, and eventually the portrayal of our culture and time. She would, could, and should live on for a long time.

Free Music Review: Elegant Simplicity
Hit: 5 Stars

I purchased this CD shortly after it was released; it was very cheap, and after I listened to it in the store several times, I took it home. Ever since then, I have listened to it a myriad of times. Yet, I never tire of hearing her voice with her simple, yet elegant piano playing in the background.

Since her quiet release a while ago, she has steadily grown in popularity; she played on The Tonight Show and recently on a tribute to Elvis. In an interview, when someone asked her why she has so many fans, she replied, "I think my music appeals to people because of its simplicity." (paraphrased) I agree.

Although you cannot hear every song or even a whole song by listening to Amazon's excerpts, it does give you a preview of her sultry voice and jazz influences. This CD filled a void for me. She is unlike many contemporary artists; it is difficult to foist her into a genre. She does not try to emulate current great and not so great jazz or rock singers.

In a review of her music in a magazine, the reviewer critized her lack of variance in her songs. The reviewer sugested that she should have added more "upbeat" melodies. Yet, what I like about this CD is its consistant elegance and beautiful simplicity with her voice providing debth and wisdom beyond her age. This is a standout CD because she attempts to remain true to herself. She is now recognized not because of her marketing team (and style coordinator), but because of simplicity: simple talent.

I rarely would give a CD five stars, but this is at least a 4.7. I hope you enjoy her music as much as I do.

Free Music Review: the best jazz cd ever.
Hit: 5 Stars

don't know why is not the best song on the disk in my opinion. it was good at first to me, but then it kinda got.......well...really old. i'm not a fan of jazz, and this cd has not just jazz, but country, a mix that a northerner would most likely not like.ick!!!! but for some reason this c.d. is so captivating to me. youll see why when i rate it.

1. Don't Know Why: it was good at first, but then it wore away. i guess the lyrics are the best thing about this song now. 76/100
2. Seven Years: very well done in such a short period of time. i love the instruments used in this song. 94/100
3. Cold Cold Heart: cover of Hank Williams, and this one is done much better than his icky version. 91/100
4. Feelin' the same way: good song. 86/100
5. Come Away With Me: the best on the c.d. i can really relate to it easily, even though it has some "Country" in it. 125/100
6. Shoot the Moon: blues, and blues, and more blues, one of the best on here. 99/100
7. Turn Me On: convincing cover. 95/100
8. Lonestar: cool song about getting lost and deserted from your lover. 93/100
9. I've got to see you AgaiN: Desperate singing. 88/100
10. Painter Song: This one faded out of sight really quickly. (good at first) 70/100
11. One Flight Down: "drifts like smoke". 86/100
12. Nightingale: 2nd best on c.d. "nightingale, teLL me your taaille" 104/100
13. Long Day is over: ok song. 82/100
14. The Nearness of You: bad bad horrible cover. i do not know why people are getting crazed over this horrible 60/100

Free Music Review: STILL GOOD AFTER 10 MONTHS
Hit: 5 Stars

It has taken me ten months to finally review this cd. Why? Well, I thought I was going to get sick of it...you know, when you first get a cd you play it over and over again...eventually it moves to the back of your music rotation. This cd still sits on my desk at work and is played in its entirety at least three times a week...sometimes all in one day. There isn't a track I skip. That's rare for me. I would think that is rare for most listeners. With her new cd "Feels Like Home" on the rack and getting all the attention, I thought a current review of this 'old' one would help anyone who is discovering Ms. Jones for the first time with her new cd.

Every track is exquisitely produced...not overproduced...which is extremely important in order to showcase a voice that is expressive way beyond her years. There is real raw emotion, depth and range on this cd.

Another reviewer suggested some early Norah Jones via The Peter Malick Group....I'm listening to that right now as I write this review. I am so glad I took that reviewers suggestion. In fact, I bought the Malick cd instead of "Feels Like Home". If you are a true Norah Jones fan you must get the Malick Group work. It seems like possibly she is being reined in on her 'commercial' cds in order to appeal to a broader audience. Not so with the Malick project. It is raw Norah.

"Come Away With Me" is certain to remain in the front of your cd library if not in your cd rack for a long time....and, rightly so. Sit back and enjoy..this artist is going to be fill your soul...

Free Music Review: it's a one-mood CD... and that's SUCH a good thing.
Hit: 5 Stars

Other reviewers below have praised Norah's debut CD more eloquently and completely, so I won't bother to repeat their words.

But I do want to add an angle: I think part of this recording's success is its thematic consistency. Look at your own collection: how many albums can you just put on CD-shuffle and know that for the next hour the music will be perfect for a certain mood? Not many. An album featuring a little of everything -- rock, ballad, fast, slow -- means that some tracks will always go against the mood you wanted to be in. Hence your shelf is full of CDs that, while interesting, never make it back into your player on some quiet Saturday afternoon. For example, the Fleetwood Mac collection: the other day I wanted their mellow pop tunes, and instead "I'm So Afraid" (live) came surging and snarling out of my speakers. That's the downside of artistic variety.

The upside of a disc like Norah's is its simple integrity. Perfect songwriting, instrumentation, voice and arrangement. Less is more. And best of all, she and her team never depart from it, never once messing with the perfect mood they have created. This is a CD that can easily pass the "CD shuffle" test, again and again.

By the way, if you love this one, you might like Madeleine Peyroux's one and only CD, "Dreamland", which came out in 1996. She was also age 22 at the time, and I still don't know how a young white girl in the 1990s could channel Billie Holiday so well. I hope Norah will be much more prolific than Madeleine turned out to be.
