Free Music Review: Just a reality check
Hit: 5 Stars

To "A music fan from somerville, MA United States", just to make the obviouos explicit, Norah is not everyone's cup of tea. So let us set that aside. May be you are at a point in life, you are looking for more upbeat sound. But regarding the hype you mention, the facts are that there is 'no hype'. People talk about Norah mainly because her CD sold 18 million copies worldwide without much hype. The talk of 'no hype' creats its own hype and that is probably what you were hearing.

Anyway, just to relate the story of someone who is touched by her music everytime I listen to her, there is something in her voice, her way of singing, the breathy technique, whatever... that gets directly into your system without you really processing it in any rational way. That is why it is hard to describe 'Why' her music is so captivating. Don't know why :-). Yes, there is talent, musical schooling etc. but then thousands of others have that. That is what great art is. If it is easily explainable rationally, then it becomes too scientific and less as an art form.

I sort of smile at myself when lots of critics try to rationalize her music, put her in genre pigeonholes, compare her with other great female singers. Individually that all makes sense but what is inexplicable is the real effect of her music is lot more than the sum of those individual parts.

The common reaction millions of people have when they hear her for the first time is 'Who is that? What kind of music is that?"

That shows there is a magical and unique quality to her.

Free Music Review: GRAMMY WINNER!
Hit: 5 Stars

Norah has gracefully walked in and has quietly taken center stage! Music will never be the same again. "Come Away With Me," is an outstanding piece of work. I wanted to thoroughly experience this CD before commenting about it. I've had it since June 2002, and I must say, never have I been so mystified and fascinated with a singer, as I am with Norah Jones. Her music is pure and simple; yet alluring enough to capture you. I was shopping one day and the store had Norah's, "Don't Know Why," video playing. I was immediately captivated by her voice. I said, "Ooh, who is that?" Her songs evoke feelings that arise from the depths of ones soul; the way she hugs that microphone makes her "unique sound" even more breathtaking. Her singing is clear enough to hear each word. I listen to her lovely, smoky voice everyday. She's just adorable, and with all the hoop-la surrounding her, she remains so serene and unaffected by it all. I predict several Grammy's for this lady!

She also has a great band. They all mix very well. I love the way Lee handles that bass on, "Cold, Cold, Heart." All of the songs are lovely, it's not everyday you find a CD with the entire selection of songs, all sounding so magnificent.

Her music videos are splendidly directed; the layouts are perfect for her to display that unique "smoothness." With the world in such chaos, we need a voice like hers to calm us all. Norah is up there with some of the greatest singers of all time. She's truly something to behold!

Free Music Review: A Class Act
Hit: 5 Stars

What an auspicious recording this is. We've only just begun to witness what Norah Jones has to offer. This album is a gem. Norah Jones is a humble, polished performer who never lets her own ambition cloud her purpose -- performing brilliant, deceptively simple and beautiful music. "Come Away With Me" is eclectic in feel, ranging from jazz, country to almost R&B. Jones is a musical chameleon -- you never realize what style you're listening to -- you simply know it is extraordinary. The caliber of each musician is phenomenal and Jones herself possesses a voice that is all at once smokey, rich, warm and intimate.

Norah Jones is not solely a jazz pianist with a great sound -- she is a sensitive songwriter as well. Several of her own songs appear on the CD, including the title track. I found the original material by Norah and multi-talented band members, Lee Alexander and Jesse Harris, to surpass the "classics" which are also offered. The original material on the album is a divine marriage of first-class music with marvelous lyrics. There is a universal quality to every track that makes them stand out of time and place. The lyrics are unique -- yet so personal they almost feel familiar without seeming cliched. Jones and her ensemble never allow the material to become bland or mundane.

If you purchase "Come Away With Me" you'll be let in on a big secret. Norah Jones is an up and coming talent who has just begun to establish herself among the upper echelon of true American musicians.

Free Music Review: Beautiful, distinguished voice and sophisticated music.
Hit: 5 Stars

In a world where the new "singing sensations" are the unoriginal screamers who participate to "American Idol" and similar TV monstrosities, it's really refreshing to witness the rise of a REAL talent with a REAL music background and an exceptional panache for musical "buon gusto."

Norah doesn't have a "big" voice, so what? Neither did Billie Holiday, but I'll take her over any screamer at any time. It's not by chance that I mentioned Billie Holiday, because that's the kind of voice Norah reminds me of, and I simply love it. Sultry, smoky and haunting are the three adjectives that immediately come to my mind.

On to the music, Norah's songs are a delightful blend of country, blues and jazz, all encased by electronic-free arrangements (i.e. real singers need no walls of synthesizers and special effects to cover the flaws of their voice...) and some very tasteful but unobtrusive piano playing by Norah herself.

I basically like all songs in this album, but my favorites are the title track ("Come Away with Me", a really delightful jazzy waltz), "Don't Know Why" (a Pat Metheny-esque tune featuring a beautiful melody and an exceptionally tasteful arrangement) and the amazing "The Nearness of You", where Norah showcases her incredible ability to perform immortal standards with nothing behind her voice but her own superb piano accompaniment.

The fact that this album received 8 Grammy awards makes me a little less pessimistic on the future of pop music.

Free Music Review: Curmudgeons Need Not Apply
Hit: 5 Stars

Come Away With Me, in my opinion, is more than deserving of all its critical acclaim and grammies. I'd like to know the last time an immensely talented musician, like Norah Jones, was able to make their hard work pay off in the mainstream music industry, especially when relying only on a grassroots constituency and not mass-market product placement. This album affected people, who told their friends and neighbors about it, who in turn told their friends and neighbors about it, and so on and so forth. This form of marketing may be beneficial to some extent, but never would one assume it to have such an enormous effect as Come Away With Me did. 19 million albums were sold! So this leaves one thing unmentioned, the music. Nothing in the world sells 19 million copies unless it is something of great vitality, creativity, substance and seminality. And Norah Jone's debut recording is all that and then some. Through the wistful grandeur of these pithy songs, an aura of loss and cresfallenness is translated to make one feel more at home, more in love and more alive. In a panoply of pensive reveries, lilting gravitas and a fey-voiced warble, Norah Jones poignantly conveys the light side of the dark, the hope in the loss and the joy in the pain. Like an elixir of life, Come Away With Me transports humanity for 45 indelible minutes, swallowing your senses and enveloping your heart. I know not of another modern recording that possesses the eminent qualities of this album, and for that alone, Come Away With Me should not be missed.
