Free Music Notes for Feels Like HomeFree Music Review: Norah goes a little country Hit: 3 StarsOn Feels Like Home, Norah Jones's sophomore album, she explored a more country-themed sound appropriate to her Texan roots and foreshadows her work with The Little Willies. The opening track Sunrise has percussion reminiscent of a horse's hooves clip-clopping away on some dusty trail straight out of an old Western, while What Am I To You flirts with blues that call to mind Norah's performance on Peter Malick's New York City. Be Here to Love Me is a beautiful slow waltz, while Creepin' In is a spirited, buoyant duet with Dolly Parton(!) laced with slide guitar. Long Way Home has a bouncy backing that reminds me of a jug band, while Humble Me is a steel-string guitar and Norah's soft croon. The remaining tracks capture the sort of laid-back (some critics called it "sopophoric") sound that Norah made famous on her debut Come Away with Me, albeit with more of a countryish edge (steel guitar, lilting country and western rhythms).
To be honest, I was working at a Barnes & Noble music department when this album was released, and I instantly took a dislike to it and tried to tune it out when we used it as in-store play. I wasn't terribly fond of the country overtones (country is one of the few musical genres that I can't stand, even though I live in Texas!), the songs weren't memorable, and there was a stylistic mismatch between the country tracks and Norah's other playing/writing style; Feels Like Home felt like it wasn't quite sure what it was trying to be. However, when I was recently on vacation and heard this played in a shop, I was drawn to it and decided to give it a second chance. I would place this second out of Norah's three albums so far (I really didn't like Not Too Late), and if you're a fan of country, you might like this more than I did. It does have some well-written songs and Norah's wonderful piano and voice to recommend it, but I still think that Norah's first album was her most versatile due to its seamless fusing of standards, country, and jazz. Feels Like Home felt less balanced overall.
Free Music Review: Thanks for the Linux downloader Hit: 5 StarsThanks for the linux downloader. From now on I'll only buy music through Amazon. Norah Jones is the best female artist in the world.
Free Music Review: Feels Like Home Hit: 3 StarsOnly three stars because this recording has too many different music styles. Some nice and sultry, some country, some hillbilly, some jazz.
Several songs don't fit her voice well. If you're looking for some Nora Jones consistency, this isn't it.
Free Music Review: Actually like the music, very poor recording though Hit: 3 StarsUnlike a lot of reviews of less than 5 starts, I enjoy the music on this CD. If you enjoy the sound of Norah's voice, you'll like the CD if you can put up with: The recording quality of this CD is horrible. Most songs have clipping or distortion no matter what system I play it on. The higher the end system the more obvious the recording has issues. If I wanted a low quality version of her music I would have just downloaded it from iTunes.
Free Music Review: More up-beat than her others Hit: 4 StarsI like Norah Jones. She's a good singer, and quite a good musician all around. She certainly shines in her songwriting and piano-playing skills. Her sound has a sultry, low, country-blues feeling to it. I feel that there are definitely influences of Robert Johnson in her music.
My only problem with Jones is that she is just a good singer, not a great singer. Her skills as a songwriter set her apart from other mediocre vocalists, but without that skill, she would have certainly been forgotten under the blanket of "okay" vocalists.
Certainly, her voice suits the music that she writes, but that would only stand to reason. What I do not see is a musician trying to take risks and try something new. Maybe breaking into a different sound would "wake up" her sound a bit. A blend of her music with Native American rhythms... anything! I'm getting bored with the same sound over and over.
On the other hand, she is certainly providing me with a lovely genre of songs to perform myself or to pass on to my students.
