Free Music Notes for Feels Like HomeFree Music Review: Simply fantastic Hit: 5 StarsIt's truly rare in this day and age to hear such a simple, classic, classy piece of work. Jones isn't simple retreading the same ground as her predecesors. Her deep and soulful voice puts every American Idol-belting teenybopper to shame, and the album's rich and vibrant production is at once mind-expanding and hypnotic, thought-provoking yet wistfully and delightfully chill. Without a doubt one of the best albums of the twenty-first century.
Free Music Review: Incredibly Weak Offering Hit: 1 StarsIt is so easy to be blinded by hype and modernism when it comes to music, is it not? I mean if something is selling alot, its easy for certain intellectually lazy individuals to slip into the cozy belief that, because its popular, it must be good. In the interests of objectivity then, lets compare Norah Jones to one of the all time great female vocalists, Etta James, and see how she stacks up.
First lets look at emotional expression.
Etta was, and is, a master of raw, gut wrenching emotion. Even the most hardened and jaded listener is easily moved to tears when confronted with the overwhelming emotion in a classic song like "Almost Persuaded" for example. Her voice and delivery are the embodiment of rage, sorrow, seduction, and vulnerability.
Norah, on the other hand, sings in a voice constrained by affected, stilted mannerisms. She never takes risks, and she seems to be afraid to venture out of a three-note range. What emerges is like musical cardboard: moderately functional, disposable, and overwhelmingly uninteresting.
Next, lets look at vocal power and command.
Etta...well, lets just say she is one of the , if not THE, most powerful female soul singers ever. Her voice can literally peel paint, shatter glass in a five mile radius, and make you think the second coming of Christ is occurring. When she revs it up, she will FLOOR you. In the immortal words of Springsteen, she shuts em up and then she shuts em down.
Norah...*sigh*....poor Norah sounds like a prepubescent white girl with a little vocal training. She's like a Geo Metro: running on three cylinders, starts shaking when she tries to go over 40. There's just absolutely nothing compelling about any of her performances. She sounds like she's never had any life experience, heart break, or joy in her limited years. Bland bland bland.
I could go on, but just try this experiment: go to an Etta James album on Amazon, preferably one of the early ones. Listen to a few samples. Now listen to a few Norah Jones tracks. See what I'm saying? Of course you do. Now do the smart thing and stay far far away.
Free Music Review: Sunrise...sunset...didn't miss this at all... Hit: 3 StarsAnother CD I've had on loan recently is Norah Jones' Feels Like Home, her second effort. I have to say, I find her voice nice enough, but the music on the CD hasn't been particularly gripping. The single "Sunrise" is the only track I recognize, and it's stuck with me, but that could just as easily be because it's the first track on the disc. I hate to say it, but I think other folks will make a more lasting impact, unles NJ learns to put more of her soul into the songs, and the recording...this just lacked emotional impact.
Free Music Review: does she know she's half east indian? Hit: 2 Starsthe minute I looked at this girl I knew she was a desi chick, so how come she didn't admit to being related to ravi until her mom publicized it? And how come she chooses to stay away from bollywood, the biggest entertainment market out there, or acknowledge the brown fans who bought her records? She's nothing but a sellout to our community
Free Music Review: Feels Like Norah! Hit: 5 StarsNorah Jones paved the way for many artists with her debut album-COME AWAY WITH ME- The sheer scale of her success was phenomenal and caught the world by storm, 5 GRAMMY's later she releases this extraordinarily different album -FEELS LIKE HOME-. What makes this album so different is the immensly new country sound of her. She paved the way for Rachael Yamagata & Jaime Callum with her soulful jazz and now she enters thr realm of LeAnn Rimes & Shania Twain. On this she sounds more like th Dixie Chicks with a fresh blend of pure country melodies.
-SUNRISE- Is exactly what I'm talking about, so pure and sensual it creates a beautiful, intimate country track. The vocals on this track are superb, no ordinary singer can use the sort of harmonies Norah does. Lee Alexander's bass is a great asset to the whole track.
-WHAT AM I TO YOU?- This track is an immediate track that becomes so great to listen to. This is the pure country where she uses her assets (voice) well.Very bluesy.
-THOSE SWEET WORDS- Just about everything on this track works, the beautiful balladry that is beyond control, the lyrics are so warming and pure. It's funny how many times I could use the word pure in a sentence to describe this song.
-CARNIVAL TOWN- Phwoar! Actually to get a song to sound like a real-life situation is hard. This sounds like an actual carousel. The guitarist on this track is phenomenal.
-IN THE MORNING- Upbeat and the lyrics are a masterpiece that have a strong structural base. This song is unexplainable.
-BE HERE TO LOVE ME- Lovely melodical glimpses in this track, the same energy is kept the whole way through. Jones is one of the only performers who never drops her pace or energy.
-CREEPIN' IN- To hear this song live redeemed me because I love this song so much that I had my doubts whether she would be able to pull it off.
-TOES-This song brings a tear to my eye because of the wholesome lust and energy in it.
-HUMBLE ME- Signature Norah Jones, pure, peacefula nd lush. Not musch of a soundscape however it has a lushness about it.
-ABOVE GROUND- Exactly like -TOES-, beautiful & serene. again the lyrics have this meaningfulness.
-THE LONG WAY HOME- A cool Tom Waits cover, well worth the listen and this album would be nothing without it.
-THE PRETTIEST THING- Very lovely and what more can I say, she is at the top of her game. This adds just that extra bit of, well I can't quite put my finger on it.Fantastic.
-DON'T MISS YOU AT ALL- Great end to a fantastic album, the only real remnant of her debut. This track is so wonderful and lovely, lush. Beautifully crafted.
OVERALL GRADE: 10/10
Again Norah Jones has amassed enough courage to create good music.
Stunning sophomore set.
