Free Music Notes for Feels Like HomeFree Music Review: A soulful album Hit: 5 Stars
Nora Jones really is the mirror-image of most of today's music. Under-produced, understated and slow, it is stripped bare of all the production and marketing gimmicks that are meant to convince us of musical substance. It reduces the performance to direct and intimate communication between the artist and the audience. I think it works because Nora's knows how to convey emotion and the natural qualities of her voice enhance the effect. So much feeling from so little effort ...We're used to seeing entertainers hop and flop around, feign exertion, expose various parts of their body, and deliberately violate various sexual and social morays in order to elicit an emotional response. Surely Nora's quiet performance can't match this. In my opinion she more than succeeds. More genuine emotion is conveyed in "Humble Me" than all the bare belly-buttons and ridiculous histrionics that others employ. Nora's music is straightforward. Her band plays in a very simplistic fashion - and sometime things do get a little too sparse - but Nora's voice and her ability to communicate is the talent here, and it is substantial.
Free Music Review: You like to hear yourself speak... Hit: 5 Stars
For this album, i really liked the songs, and their country-jazz verges. It's not my favorite, but for something outside my spectrum it was really good. To say as some did that she is not talented is quite an absurd falsity... on the contrary i find especially in her remake of the classic Duke song that she holds so much potential... Reviewers like Hans have no right to say that she could ever be compared to a different era.. Let's think about it logically Sarah Vaughn vs. Norah Jones, need I say more, they're both good in different ways, but to compare Norah to even Coltrane would seem asinine, and yet it's been done... Also to say you'd rather listen to pigs being slaughtered than listen to this CD, and that we should avoid it if we can, is wrong. For one have you even heard the sound of pigs being slaughtered? and two, you have every right to state how you feel, but don't tell others not to buy the CD. All of these comments bothered me extremely of people who find the music uninteresting, and plain, obviously you'd rather dismiss something without even intellectually approaching it...
Free Music Review: "Feels Like Home" Feels just right Hit: 5 Stars
As with most muscians, the sophomore album is the test album. With the release of a debut album, listeners are bombarded with the sounds of a new artist. It is, however the second album that determines if the artist will get their foot in the proverbial door. Norah Jones has done an excellent job with this her second solo album. While I will admit there is a slight progression to the country aspect, I must also note, that she combines this element along with her jazz-like quality. I am by no means a big fan of country music, but I believe that anyone would be hard pressed to quantify this new album to any of the current country artists. I also was pleased to see that Norah took a more active part in the writing of this album. I would also love to point out that track 11 is a Tom Waits tune, and in my opinion, anyone who can do a Waits song decently is welcome in my collection. To sum up, I believe this album, while different from her first, is a force to be reckoned with on its own. I reccomend this album to anyone who appreciates a quiet evening listening to music through headphones.
Free Music Review: Wow Hit: 5 Stars
I surprised myself- my tendency for negativity towards a followup album after falling in love with a previous release didn't kick in! It always takes me a bit of time to establish a relationship with an artist's latest message; with "Feels Like Home" Norah whispered and I understood. Warmly wrapping you in in melodic acoustics, pure vocals and mellow riffs, this release is nothing short perfect. Truly in the spirit of feeling like home, I was welcomed with a warm hug and smiles. I'm not a fan of twangy country or of Dolly Parton's vocals (her beautiful soul does speak volumes to my heart, though); Objectively, 'Creepin In' is a frisky song that flaunts Norah's and Dolly's mutual respect and talent. ...all other tracks are on replay :) Norah has gained maturity, confidence and experience in this album. Her accomplishment is personal, graceful and gracious; for as much as I avoid comparing albums, I have to say that her first was what she presented - just a try that was to be a drop in the bucket but wasn't -- 'Feels Like Home' flaunts it's comfort in being beautiful.
Free Music Review: First Impressions are not always right Hit: 5 Stars
At this point, only one day after it's release, I can not give an honest opinion or review of "Feels Like Home". But at the same point I will give it 5 stars. In looking back to when I first purchased "Come Away With Me", I remember I found it boring and kept skipping over tracks in hopes of finding something more exciting. After about only a week I filed the CD away and did not play it again until 3 months later when I saw Norah on TV singing with Willie Nelson. It was such an excellent performance that I pulled the disc out and really gave each individual song a chance. I came to love the entire album, and eventhough the music was gentle and subdued, it was also creative and exciting. So, back to Norah's current release "Feels Like Home". The songs are similar enough to what she did on "Come Away With Me", that I'm certain after a month or more of listening and getting to know each song a bit more intimately I will come to be as excited about this album as I was about the first. Hence at that point I will write a more detailed review.
