Free Music Notes for Not Too Late

Free Music Review: Great, great, great, great
Hit: 5 Stars

.. and just great.
'Not Too Late' sets the new standards in appreciation of Norah Jones and her unbelievable talent. And her unique style. And her great band. And everything her.

Therefore it deserves more that 5 stars. More like a night sky full of stars. And even that wouldn't be enough.
I've pre-ordered this album on iTunes because I had a feeling this one will be something to hear, something special. And, oh boy, it's unbelievable.

Perfectly tuned jazz piano, occasional brass, strings, whispering guitar, percussion, dimmed lights, subtle tension in the air, sensuous voice and heaps, heaps of imagination ... this album carries your soul in and around beautiful places of Norah Jones' world.

How she does that? Where all that comes from? Don't ask me that, I have no idea .. or maybe, I finally have some clue about it.
Remember her first album? Everyone said it was amazing and she a young lady of a great talent. Moody jazzy tunes, she sits before the piano, lots of emotions.

Everyone was expecting the next step, and when it did come, many were confused. She dared to taste something new! Bluegrass?! Yes, new tunes, new mood, new lyrics, all new Norah. Norah was going home, and she has every right to do so.

And now, this third album .. has the story finally settled somewhere, and where this album fits in, you may ask? Where she actually belongs?

This album finally reveals -- Norah Jones lives in a parallel universe made of imagination, intriguing and smart lyrics, warm emotions, courageous thoughts and vivid colours. And her own style. 'Not Too Late' flies somewhere in between two first albums, but it rises up and beyond. My favourite song? Actually all of them. Every song is a surprise and this whole album is a necklace made of precious gems.

Enjoy it and try to relax -- you can't fit Norah Jones into any particular cliche -- she is better than that, she is smarter than that and deserves your utmost respect and appreciation.

Free Music Review: Norah sells these songs without even trying--and that's no small feat !!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Norah Jones's third album features her fantastic singing and songwriting abilities; and just one listen proves she's quite a talented artist.

The CD track set starts with "Wish I Could;" this song is about losing a boyfriend to war. The arrangement for guitar is beautiful and simple enough for Norah's vocals to remain squarely in the spotlight. Love the sound effects to create the illusion that there are two Norahs singing part of this song! "The Sun Doesn't Like You" explores a woman's feelings to spend time alone with her man if only for a little while. The musical arrangement bolsters Norah's delivery of this fine ballad. Norah sings "The Sun Doesn't Like You" like the pro that she is!

"Until The End" features Norah singing in a highly polished style; and the fine musical arrangement shines like gold! Norah sings of how she needs to be her own woman and not imitate another who isn't truly happy. "Thinking About You" explores the end of a love affair as Norah delivers this flawlessly; love those drums and percussion! I predict that you will like "Thinking About You" very much.

"Broken" features Norah singing her very best; and "My Dear Country" allows Norah to express her regret that our country didn't elect someone she wanted to be elected. "My Dear Country" has a splendid piano arrangement; and Norah sings this without a superfluous note! How's about that musical interlude on "My Dear Country?" Great!

"Little Room" lets Norah express that her room is a safe place for her to be with her man; the melody bolsters Norah's performance and I think you'll enjoy "Little Room" very much.

The liner notes include the lyrics to the songs with some pretty awesome artwork. The quality packaging impresses me.

Norah Jones turns in another great performance with her third album entitled Not Too Late. Hopefully Norah will continue to entertain us as only she can for many decades to come.

Thank you, Norah!

Free Music Review: Breaking new ground
Hit: 5 Stars

I am surprised at some of the negative reviews on the site. I think people expect Norah to be a pop diva. This she is not. 'Thinking about you' is the closest that she gets to the idiom of her first two solo albums. With the rest she is pushing frontiers. There are some who are trying to figure out which genre her music falls into. This is the legacy of straight jacketing music to suit marketing demands. Though she is influenced by multiple traditions, jazz, blues, folk etc, it is neither. This is her own unique music in her own unique voice, though the base remains very American. The other development with the ipod generation is to look at a single number and judge piecemeal. A CD presentation is a complete work of art and the whole is greater than its parts. The tempo starts slow and picks up in pace and depth, reaches a crecendo and turns mellow again. The use of the cello and pizzicato in 'Wish I could' and 'Broken' is inspired. A liberal use of the acoustic guitar, trombone and tenor sax and some great bazz builds atmosphere and timbre. Is this a trend? I see Dylan doing the same in 'Modern Times'. This is a superb album meant for the discerning listener. Fortunately, some kids are showing the way (Norah Jones, Jamie Callum, Katie Mellua). This is music that is still evolving. I am reminded of Jerry Garcia who started with the bluegrass tradition but pushed frontiers. These artists cross boundaries and break barriers and grow well beyond the traditions they started with. Norah Jones is in the process of doing the same. She shows a range, flexibility, maturity and musical knowledge and capability that augurs well for the future. This is music that will endure when rap is passe and hiphop is no longer hip.

Free Music Review: Outstanding
Hit: 5 Stars

When Norah first came out I wrote her off as a pop artist with only one or two good CD's in her. But the more she writes the better she becomes. I picked this CD up just before my shift ended tonight and have already listened to it twice. I'm 22 but I love and listen to every variety of music there is, but no matter how much I listen to music I like the newer music, but I love the older ones. They're bands that are outstanding in today's music, but I think over half of them don't have the staying power.

However I think Norah does have the ability to stay around for awhile. "Sinkin' Soon" reminds me a lot of Tom Waits "Rain Dogs" CD, and that's not an insult. "Thinking about You" is just outstanding and it stands on it's own. The atmosphere of "The Sun Doesn't LIke You" reminds me of "The Doors - Riders of the Storm" with lyrics that could be written by Lou Reed. Take the first two lines of the song "the sun doesn't like you, you always get burned/stay in the shade and watch the world turn," the lyrics are just outstanding. One of my favorites is "Rosie's Lullaby" it's just inspiring. It's beautiful and inspiring.

So the songs don't run at 150 beats a minute. The music is outstanding it travels through the whole spectrum blues/rock/classical/country/jazz, it's all there. As for the lyrics they are beautifully written. This CD is showing a hell of a lot of talent that I think is going to explode in the next 1 or 2 CD's. Yes I would recommend this CD.

Free Music Review: Beautiful CD
Hit: 5 Stars

Reading some of the reviews made me kind of uneasy about pre-ordering this CD without hearing song samples from it. But it's an excellent surprise and Norah delivers once again. True this CD is more artsy with minimalistic instrumentation, but in this case less is more. After all, it's Norah's voice that's the true instrument and it shines as on her other CDs.
I liked her previous CD better than her first one, and this one is just as good as her second CD. On the instrumentation next to some piano we hear a lot of slide and dobro guitars with a touch of Alt-Country and even brass instruments on some titles which remind you on the soundtrack of the Godfather during the funeral service scene. There's diversity on this album and it has a slight sad undertone as some of the songs talk about 'Broken' and the Sun doesn't like you, but it becomes more positive in the end.
There are beautiful and haunting balads on this album like 'until the end', 'thinking about you', and a whole array of nice songs like 'wake me up' and 'little room' ... and 'rosie's lullaby' and 'not too late' conclude this CD. Again, this Norah Jones delivery is more artsy, ecclectic and not necessarily a commercial production, but instead a unique piece of art that true music lovers will enjoy a lot. The CD is not boring, although Norah's voice is soothing as usual, but I can't get enough of it - just would like to hear more.
