The first song on this album is one of the catchiest black metal songs I've ever heard-- caustic and completely compelling, with vocals that could seer flesh. I'm glad I bought this album, if only for the first song. If the album continued in this way for its entire length, it would be incredible, maybe the best black metal album ever. But alas, the rest of the album couldn't be more different-- plodding and repetitive, often just plain boring. It's like the band was making some kind of statement with the first song-- yes, we could give you some great black metal, and here's an example, but that would be too easy, we will bore and frustrate you instead. I'm a big fan of the avant-garde, but this stuff just doesn't do it for me. It's supposed to be the "new wave of black metal" or something, but it falls flat and goes nowhere. The guitars have a nice weird tone to them, and the music can be very atmospheric, but none of it is particularly new or exciting. Ved Buens Ende covered the same ground much more effectively years ago. The problem lies in the excessive repitition, which saps the music of any energy. Even the seering vocals fail to give the proceedings any momentum. If you can get this album cheap, give it a shot for the first song.
