Free Music Notes for Nouvelle VagueFree Music Review: Not So "Vague" At All Hit: 4 Stars
Nouvelle Vague (French for "new wave") has as much in common with the cinematic movement of the 1960s as the musical genre of the 1980s. Although these covers are in English, they're done French-Brazilian style (lightly accented vocals, bossa nova rhythms). Highlights include "The Guns of Brixton" and "Teenage Kicks," but the biggest surprise is the boppy "Too Drunk to F**k," while the biggest disappointment is a bland "I Melt With You" (arguably a bland-a-thon even in its original Modern English incarnation). "Nouvelle Vague" isn't groundbreaking by any means, but it handily transcends novelty--quite a feat for a project of this kind.
Free Music Review: Modern Classics, Shaken not Stirred Hit: 4 Stars
I first heard a track from this album on the radio on my way to work- Friday Night Saturday Morning (a cover of The Specials)- I couldn't stop thinking about it all day and ended up searching online and buying before the day was out. The other tracks (all covers) have not dissappointed either. The chill-out style yet toe-tapping beat makes it a perfect album to relax to or play when you want to hear some older tracks with a new slant. Definite favourites are track 3 (In a Manner of Speaking) and track 11 (Teenage Kicks). Strangely enough, two songs that I did not know so well before buying the album.
Free Music Review: Oddly apealing Hit: 4 Stars
I think what strikes me about this album is the bizarre choice of songs. Nouvelle Vague could have easily chosen nothing but New Wave classics to cover but instead they threw in some slightly obscure and unexpected tunes. The concept is strange enough but hearing Killing Joke and Dead Kennedy's done this way is just twisted. It is undoubtedly a novelty recording and it's done pretty well. Some of the breathy vocals are a little irritating at times but overall it's a fun listen. My favorite is Tuxedomoon's "In A Manner Of Speaking".
Free Music Review: Desultory sensations....... Hit: 4 Stars
Am I the only reviewer who LOVES the desultory delivery on "Guns Of Brixton"?! Dyspeptic never sounded so ironic. This CD digests better if taken as an organic whole, meanining a CD whose lounge melodies, easy-listening chorus-filled tunes, and female vocals draw comparisons to band Noonday Underground (especially their disc, "Self Assembly") and fellow Brits, Broadcast. If you think of this as a "covers" venture neccesitating wholely original arrangements, (think Richard Cheese and The Dan Band)then you will be disappointed.
Free Music Review: not fantastic, but not bad either Hit: 4 Stars
Look, it's pseudo bossa nova. 'Love Will Tear Us Apart,' 'Guns of Brixton,' and 'I Just Can't Get Enough' try HARD.
But the most gorgenous song on this album is 'In A Manner of Speaking.' Listen to any of the originals, and I guarantee you'll be impressed by the cover. It's gorgeous, intelligable, nonvibrato. It's wonderful.
You'll fall in love.
