Free Music Notes for Dig Out Your SoulFree Music Review: Good job Oasis!!! Hit: 4 Stars
This is probably the best collection of songs Oasis has done since Morning Glory.
As soon as I heard the stomping blues-rock riff of "Bag It Up" I knew I was in for a very promising album.
Interestingly, the rest of the album didn't go the way I expected, but I did find that what lurked inside was of very good quality, its nice to see Oasis branch out sonically a little bit, adding in some more modern sounding beats to the equation. All in all, its a dense, heavy sounding album, with a bit of a psychedelic edge to some of the songs.
Some highlights for me:
-The immense swagger of "The Turning"
-The steam-hammer stomp of "(Get Off Your) High Horse Lady"
-The haunting majestic strings of "Falling Down"
The two lowlights:
-"The Nature Of Reality" does nothing for me. Maybe you'll like it, but it bores me to death, and the sitar on it makes it sound like a crappy rip-off of when the Beatles were doing something similar. Not that I hate the sitar as an instrument, I LOVE "To Be Where There's Life."
-"Ain't Got Nothin'" is such a generic Oasis song that it sounds like self-parody. Oh well, its barely 2 minutes, so it passes quickly.
But really, on the whole, the album is quite impressive. Oasis seems less concerned with conquering the world now and seems to be concentrating on just making good albums. And for that I applaud them, the dedication to their art shows on "Dig Out Your Soul," its a fantastic album.
Free Music Review: 4.25 Stars: Getting back to their old form Hit: 4 Stars
Ok, first off, I like Oasis a great deal and am a staunch defender of the group but the last 2 albums just didn't do it for me like I had wished. Still, I wouldn't say either was bad but DBtT was a bit more of a disapointment than HC though. I realize they can't keep making the first 3 records (yes, I LOVE BHN) but I felt that they kind of went off course, especially with DBtT. I know growth as a band is needed, but I felt like Oasis was trying to be too many things to too many people. Oasis is a hard hitting, rockin' band, in the best sense of the term and this record really seems to get back to that core objective. I liked it from the first listen and typically, for me at least, that first listen is all important. I didn't feel like I was trying to make myself like the record, I just plain liked it and it will only get better with time. So, good job mates... Well done !! You once again sound like the OASIS we all remember. It is just a shame that they don't get the airplay here in the USA they deserve, especially with all of the really horrible (so called) music that seems to garner all of the accolades these days. Leave all the silly, whiney, "sensitive" music to the Keane's and coldplay's of the world. Oasis are, and will always be a proper rock band !!
Free Music Review: Great music - HORRIBLE SOUND QUALITY! Hit: 4 Stars
This is a great album but the sound quality is wretched...it literally at times sounds like a 96 Kbps MP3 file. I DJ in a club, and when I play "Shock Of The Lightning" there's no way I can compensate for all the flat midrange...it just hurts everyone's ears no matter how much I adjust the EQ, and so I think I'm going to have to stop playing this entire disc. There is NO bass. I've also tried playing the "Shock Of The Lightning" video from the deluxe edition, but THE SOUND ON THE DVD IS JUST AS BAD (standard DVD audio has slightly higher specs than CD audio, but it doesn't make a difference here).
I see other reviewers have complained about the same thing. Hopefully there is a better master of this album at the studio than what ended up on this disc, and they'll repress it someday. I've never heard a modern major recording sound this bad. If you're listening at home, the sound is good enough that you can still enjoy the album...but play it back-to-back with almost any other CD and even non-audiophiles can probably hear what I'm complaining about. If you purchase this album, definitely buy it on CD rather than MP3, or the sound will be even more degraded.
Free Music Review: It's different in a good way Hit: 4 Stars
I liked the album a lot. I thought that Heathen Chemistry and Don't Believe The Truth were kinda an attempt to make Morning Glory II, which is impossible. Oasis's best albums are when they get a bit on the edge and also get, dare I say, slightly crazy. The band's best work is Definitely Maybe, Be Here Now, Standing on the Shoulders of Giants and, now as well, Dig Out Your Soul. I admire their creative risks and I love their devotion to rock n' roll that works. They've never tried to reinvent the genre. They just play good tunes.
Also, be weary of those reviewers who say Oasis sound too much like The Beatles. To be perfectly honest, everyone sounds like The Beatles. I can't remember the last time I heard a rock song that didn't remind me of some Beatles track. I think it's great that Oasis are so up front about it, there's a lot of other bands who could use the same dose of humility--cough, cough U2.
All in all, strong album. First five songs are money. Next few are acceptable, save Falling Down which is great. Solider On ends the album kinda flat--shoulda been more there.
Free Music Review: Solid work. This album helps define the Oasis sound Hit: 4 Stars
From Be Here Now to Don't Believe The Truth, I believe Oasis lost or was at the very least sidetracked from defining the essence of the Oasis sound. Definitely Maybe and (What's the Story) Morning Glory was and is the Oasis soundtrack. Dig Out Your Soul goes a long way to redefining who Oasis really is...
This album has the elements of solid arrangements and catchy harmonies. The tracks have an array of influences such as the blues, straight forward rock, and ballads. Dave Sardy's production on this album is even and focused in the way Morning Glory was. Liam Gallager has not necessarily recaptured his vocal talents, but sings as good has he ever did. The song "I'm Outta Time" shows Liam's abilities has grown as a songwriter. Noel Gallagher's songwriting on "The Shock Of Lightening" recaptures the essesnce of the rock tracks like "Live Forever" did on Definitely Maybe. Other tracks such as "The Turning" and "Soldier On" are solid tracks that have the elements of early Oasis with new twists.
Dig Out Your Soul does what the title states.
