Free Music Review: Oasis: Don't Believe The Truth (Epic)
Hit: 5 Stars

It has been utterly difficult trying to find a way to listen to this album before hitting stores, but the more time I get the more time I get to balance out this discomfort with Oasis sounding like the heroes that made them what they are today, minus the fistfights between brothers. Now they have come back with what could be a gem called "Don't Believe The Truth". It is also utterly difficult to try and listen to other albums on the Internet while dealing with the fact that the albums on the Internet sounds way different than it does on headphones. Well, I'll make do and add some points. The first song "Turn Up The Sun" sounds summery enough to kick off their album beautifully and with a bit of influence from Blues music. Nonetheless, it sounds a bit like something that will reign better in your earpones to give you a view of light that Oasis gives. (What am I talking about?) "Mucky Fingers" next carries off the next suite of the album. "As you face your disease, you squeeze into the emperor's clothes," sounds like they really got on top of the worries of changing you and what makes you the happy you you are. "Mucky Fingers" brings Noel up to the mike. "Lyla" brings them back to their joyful guitar playing and hidden Beatles emulation you would hear on Heathen Chemistry. Liam's famous scratchy voice leads "Lyla" into a more hopeful and spiritual direction. To tell you thetruth. the first time I heard the song, I thought it was the most boring and ripped of the stuff. (I always underestimate new singles on my first listen. Geez.) "Love Like A Bomb": "You turn me on/Loves like a bomb/blowing in my mind" seems like a pretty lackluster take on Oasis' idea to add a new "Songbird" and take on the last one. The last one was acoustic, and this one adds a bit more of appreciation, even adding the Middle-East-like guitar trick from "The Hindu Times" for good measure. (I sound so simple). "The Importance Of Being Idle" brings back Noel "My girlfirend told me you get a life/You're lazy/But I don't mind" shows Noel enjoys his break and decides to waste himself only to his expense. The best line so far is "I can't get a life if my heart's not in it." Try not to move him unless you ask him to. "The Meaning Of Soul" seems like the hardest of the collection of songs. It is also, oddly, the shortest of the bunch. So it seems that Oasis has gotten their act together and poured their heart out on the album, which makes it all the more better.

Then comes the infamous proof of existing truth rays when Liam writes a spiritually-inspired album about a struggle between him and his brother, ironically called "Guess God Thinks I'm Abel". This song not only sounds personal, but many may be skeptical about whether Noel and Liam are ready to bury the hatchet for good. Many may be happy. Many may not even try to debate on it since both Liam and Noel could care less either way. Whatever the matter, it is the standout song that reminds you plenty of "Stand By Me". Although the ending starts with the same utterly short and climactic musical expression that both annoyed and baffled me the last time I listened to Arcade Fire's "Wake Up". "Part of the Queue" decribes Noel looking aroud trying to gather himself all while overcoming a struggle. "Every beginning breaks it's own promise/I'm having trouble just finding my soul in this town." See what I mean? "Keep the Dream Alive" is about fighting to be. The american dream seems out of whack, and there will be help to keep it going. Could this be a post-9/11 chant that rifles "What's going On?" We don't know but the album seems 1/4th mediocre but good enough to listen to for hope. "A Bell Will Ring": "The world is wide as your life is thin/so entertain your goals." Can you ask for a better "just believe" song? "A Beel Will Ring", sung by Liam, adds his ingredients to complimenting both the cocoon and the worm to be and be it beautifully. "Let There Be Love" brings them to their most united to pull of a 60's lovefest in the new millenium by declaring there be love and to waste it wisely. The ending jamsession is not only the emphasis, but a short take on their last sleeper track "All Around The World".

So far the album is glorified and it may redeem them back their crown in Britpop. In other words, Coldplay may possibly be the next U2, but Oasis has what it takes to be the new Beatles, whether both fans like it or not. But like the Beatles, will they be able to keep their personal and musical status intact, unlike the lifetime feud between Paul McCartney and John Lennon? Will they be able to beat the alleged slump from their last three albums? We don't know but you bet your bottom dollar that they still have a bit of heart to spill and install to a crazy world like this one. And the close comparison makes the experience all worth it.

Rating: 9/10

Don't Believe the Truth Poster

Cd in very good condition. Jewel case has a few scratches. Ships 1st class.
Oasis albums have always prompted flashbacks--Was that a Beatles melody? Is that chorus on loan from T. Rex? Wait, wasn't that a Crowded House song once? But the mouthy British group's latest really sounds like a pop artifact. Both in production and execution, Don't Believe The Truth feels like an album better suited to 1965 than 2005. From the tambourines and jangling guitars that chime in opening track "Turn Up To The Sun" to the tinny pre-hippie philosophizing of "Keep The Dream Alive," it's an album that thinks the way forward is by looking back. First single "Lyla" borrows its opening swagger from the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man," while "The Meaning of Soul" lifts the Small Faces' mod jitters wholesale. But hack through the clichéd lyrics and worn riffs and the most important element on the follow up to 2002's Heathen Chemistry remains distinctly Oasis' own: Attitude. And in such wonderful abundance, "No one could break us/ No one could take us," they sing. --Aidin Vaziri
