Free Music Review: An Ending Worth Starting Again

Starting out in 1985 having four years to make their debut, Obituary were well seasoned to say the least. Over the Course of three more years, they made two albums. "The End Complete" being their third release by this point, they have made their mark in being one of Death metal originators. Obituary came to be in easily the biggest Death Metal location of its time (and till thoroughly a large metal scene today)...Florida!
I find Obituary to release some very solid music, but the recording quality is a bit lackluster.Especially having to deal with Metallica's insanely large budget "Black Album", " The End Complete" is going to take a nose dive in this section. Obituary in contrast are an early Death Metal act unlike Metallica being a thrash metal band. Quality isn't always a bands selling point, as this hard heavy hitter swings for powerful tunes.
Opening with a little bit of feed back swaying in to a mid paced tune "I'm In Pain" begins the wrath brought on by this album. The opening fifteen second solo lick burst screams! As the Vocals come into play around the minute mark, this is the true make or break deal of the album. You already know the guitar is a thick watery tone, the drums are thumping and kicking, the bass is darkening and gloomy. Many enjoy earlier Death Metal vocals (as compared to todays ever dwindling vocalist aiming for Deathcore vocals), some of my fellow metalheads dislike John Tardy's growls. He was a pioneer in the low dark growl scheme that emerged to be a staple to Death Metals ever thickening sound. I personally wasn't a big fan of the vocals at first, but as time set in I soon learned to enjoy and appreciate very much so. "Dead Silence" contrary to its name is a thrilling song, with an amazing solo nearing the end of the song. It pumps solid all the way through. "Sickness" begins with a very thrashy riff (given if the guitar had more treble and a bit drier. I find "Corrosive" to be another great guitar song. The riffs in general aren't too difficult and aren't displayed in a fashionable manor, but Death Metal never intended to be a friendly radio glammed genre anyways. I really enjoy "Killing Time" along gap pursues for a strong duration of the song, the vocals blast back in a startling manor. All the songs hold up some what well, but their are definitley some gems that shine more so than others here.
Overall not the best buy, but definitely worth checking the band out in general. The album delivers, but a bit of polish to the album would've been nice. Obituary have just recently released "Xecutioner's Return" in 2007, and have an unnamed title 'To Be Announced' (TBA) aiming for sometime in 09'.
