Free Music Notes for Of Love and Hope: Music and Poetry from Beauty and the BeastFree Music Review: Romantics Take Heed Hit: 5 Stars
I am not a soundtrack junkie. I have a select few soundtrack albums, but since I am a vocalist I rarely listen to them, preferring music that I can sing along with.
I, like many others, bought this album on tape years ago. I sat and just listened so many times that I wore out the tape. As soon as that happened I realized that I should have gotten the CD and I went straight to the store, but they were sold out. I never saw the disc again except for as much as $50 or $60 on Ebay. I didn't even hear that it was being released again until I happened on a copy at my local store. I couldn't really afford it, but I bought it anyway and listened to it the very moment I got it home. It was everything I remembered.
For those who don't know, this is the soundtrack for the late 80's TV series "Beauty and the Beast." In the series, Ron Perlman (Hellboy) played the lion-like Vincent, the beast with the heart of a poet. For this soundtrack, Perlman reads some of the most lovely poetry ever written, sometimes over/with the beautiful orchestral music, sometimes between the pieces. But this is Ron Perlman completely in character. It is not the actor reading some pretty words, but the character of Vincent reading those words to his love, and you can feel that in every word. Perlman even got so much into character that he wore Vincent's prosthetic fangs in the studio so that his voice would sound the same as it did on the show.
The end result is a disc that will make you alternately smile and weep. It is the perfect company for a winter night, and a beautiful gift to share with the one you love. Whether or not you are a fan of the series, or of soundtracks in general, I cannot recommend this CD too highly.
You will NOT regret this purchase.
Free Music Review: The Power of Love Conquers It All Hit: 5 Stars
Beauty and The Beast the TV Series: This was the best series ever since Moonlighting hit the screen. This was the Power of True Love that conquered everything that would get in it's way. I was extremely disappointed when the series was cancelled. This was a pure, and natural show that even youngsters could enjoy. Beauty and The Beast, (Linda Hamilton & Ron Perlman did an excellent job with this series program for TV. Their pure love for each other demonstrated the world would be a better place if we treated each other the way they did without looking at physical appearances. This was a program that taught us to respect one another, help those who are in need no matter how hard it could be, and don't judge a person by the color, nationality, or origin. Beauty and The Beast taught a tale the world should learn to adapt with one another instead of neglecting each other everyday. I agree with my previous fans: Beauty and The Beast should be brought back into production for the new generation. I would prefer to see the original characters playing their roles, but unfortunately you had to kill Catherine towards the end which was hard to accept. Vincent and Catherine were meant for each other even though they came from worlds apart. I fell in love with this TV series at the age of 11, I am now 39 and still enjoy watching the Series over and over again, just like the first time. This is Pure Love at its best. Please bring the show back? Thank you, Mrs. Peterson
Free Music Review: He walks in beauty Hit: 5 Stars
I remember when I first moved to CA from NY in 1989, I met a friend who was raving about a brand new show that just aired and she was dying for me to see it. She had such passion and urgency in her voice about wanting me to watch this show, that one day I had to sit down and watch it. After watching one episode, I was hooked! My friend knew intuitively how much of a romantic I was and that is was her life's purpose to tell me about it. I was so moved by the chemistry between the charactors I was easily drawn into them. That voice of the charactor "Vincent" always made my heart go out to him, because he was the most noblest of all men who can ever hope to become. His voice was like a balm which soothed any fear or hurt that you were experiencing and it made it ok and gave you the strength to go on. It gave you courage to face anything. He was always there. For Catherine, to me she was humbled by the experience and made her greatful for her life and everything in it. I am very happy to have had the experience of Beauty and the Beast in my life. Every time I watch it, it makes me take stock of my life and never take anything for granted. This show has made me a better person and now that I have both the CD and DVD's, every week, I have a BATB get together at my house (for the die-hard fans, of course). Thank you for bringing it back and reminding me that all of life is beautiful, even though it may shatter your idea of what beauty is. Be happy.
Free Music Review: A MUST HAVE On Every Level Hit: 5 Stars
BUY THIS CD!
I don't care who you are, what your background or tastes in music, art, culture, poetry or literature are -every man woman and child on the face of this planet should listen to this CD at least once during their life.
I have never -and I sincerely mean NEVER- heard a more perfect blend of poetry, music and narrator as has been preserved on this CD. One could possibly argue that the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack, with its dialogue and music highlights is more appropriate for such high praise, but worthy as that recording is, it is so poorly recorded that it distracts from the enjoyment of listening to it.
Here, Perlman's throaty whispers are captured as clearly as the most delicate tremor of the violins. The poems -both classic and modern- are perfectly chosen and are complimented both emotionally and spiritually with excerpts from Lee Holdridge's scores from the TV series.
The tagline of the show was "So romantic you can feel it..." -which today seems more than a little florid, but when listening to this CD one can easily understand the truth of it.
This superbly recorded CD deserves to be not just in every home, but in every library and public archive out there.
Free Music Review: Of Love and STILL Hopeful Hit: 5 Stars
I have one of the few Of Love and Hope cassette tapes signed by Ron Perlman during one of the way too few conventions I attended several years ago. I was also fortunate to meet Lee Holdridge at another BATB con, so this is very personal for me. The tape is nearly untouched, because I couldn't bear to wear it out, so to listen to the music, the tracks were recorded and saved on my computer. How wonderful to see it appearing again on CD. Now I can listen to Vincent's words and the music without worrying about wearing it out. My intention is to take the new CD to work and subtly introduce it to my co-workers so they get a chance to hear Vincent's voice and the music that still haunts my dreams. Thank you for offering Of Love and Hope. And, yes, I'm still hopeful for a return of Beauty and the Beast, if only in reruns on TV. With all the junk out there now, this magnificently written and acted series and the music deserve a comeback!
