I know that some writers have been critical that several of the new dance & ballet sequences have been lifted straight from the soundtrack. So we do have on most of them, some dance steps or bits of dialogue. I too wish that they'd gone back to the orchestral tracks only. But hey; just having the music in this accessable form is a real bonus for me. Robert Russell Bennett's arrangements have IMHO never been bettered, and the vocals are still as good as most on record. I used to work part-time as a cinema projectionist so I had the pleasure of seeing - and just as importantly hearing - these great musicals over and over. I loved the dance and ballet arrangements and was always frustrated when they so rarely appeared on the LP soundtracks. I lived with and treasured the old LP of Oklahoma for nearly 40 years till Angel put out a cleaned up version in '93. Now at least we've got more music. When will someone do the same (or even better) with expanded "South Pacific" and "Oliver"? I guess at my age I'm thankful for small mercies and this recent trio of R&H soundtracks will satisfy me for a few more years. |
