Free Music Notes for Oklahoma! (1955 Film Soundtrack)

Free Music Review: 'Oklahoma' Soundtrack the new expanded edition.
Hit: 4 Stars

I know that some writers have been critical that several of the new dance & ballet sequences have been lifted straight from the soundtrack. So we do have on most of them, some dance steps or bits of dialogue. I too wish that they'd gone back to the orchestral tracks only. But hey; just having the music in this accessable form is a real bonus for me. Robert Russell Bennett's arrangements have IMHO never been bettered, and the vocals are still as good as most on record. I used to work part-time as a cinema projectionist so I had the pleasure of seeing - and just as importantly hearing - these great musicals over and over. I loved the dance and ballet arrangements and was always frustrated when they so rarely appeared on the LP soundtracks. I lived with and treasured the old LP of Oklahoma for nearly 40 years till Angel put out a cleaned up version in '93. Now at least we've got more music. When will someone do the same (or even better) with expanded "South Pacific" and "Oliver"? I guess at my age I'm thankful for small mercies and this recent trio of R&H soundtracks will satisfy me for a few more years.

Free Music Review: A definitive movie recording
Hit: 4 Stars

A very complete recording of the strong performances from the original 1950's movie. All the dances are recorded here, especially hard to find ones (Kansas City, Many a New Day and All or Nothing). You will be disappointed if you are expecting this recording to match the broadway score. None of the dances match the score and are arranged (predictably) to fit on the screen, not stage. The bonus LP Overture is the closest rendition to the original score. For Oklahoma! fans, this recording is a collector CD, especially because it has so many bonus recordings.

Free Music Review: It was like sitting in the front row of the musical.
Hit: 4 Stars

This soundtrack was just like the movie. If you enjoyed watching the production on film you will definitely enjoy this CD. There have been several other releases with different casts but this one was the one that most of us have probably seen and heard!
