Yesterday I saw Oliver Mtukudzi and the Black Spirits play in Las Palmas and, like the rest of the audience, was blown away. I have had Tuku Music for some time, and have fallen for the intricate guitar lines and acoustic feel. But seeing the band live has made me look at the music and the man in a whole new light. The album alone is evidence that he is a brilliant composer. But he is also a master performer, and although the vitality of the songs comes across on the CD, the sheer excitement of his act is inevitably missing. He and his co-vocalists drove the music along at a relentless pace, and mesmerized those watching with their dance movements and showmanship on stage. And at the centre of the performance, though keeping a low profile, the second guitarist controlled the rhythm and evolution of each composition. The enthusiasm was irresistible. His live show would be hard to surpass. The band produced a song based on a traditional Zimbabwean dance with a rhythm that simultaneously confounded and enthralled the largely European crowd. Oliver Mtukutzi is another example of why African musicians deserve greater recognition. As the mighty Sam Mangwana once noted about himself, if Oliver had been born in the US, he would be a multi-millionaire and international superstar. This album is the next best thing to the real McKoy. Grab it.

Free Music Review: THE sound of southern africa in 2000
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard these songs at a performance in August 2000 at the city hall in Bulawayo. Tuku and the Black Spirits must have played past 3 in the morning. It was a crazy night with wild dancing, wild drunks, and the security guards not removing those who ran on stage as in the US, but just hitting them back into the crowd with their clubs in an endless game of cat & mouse.

It seemed like at every bus stop, cross roads, or town market I heard familiar songs from that night as I traveled through Zim, and it's neighboring countries. I even heard several bands cover 'Todii' at shows in garages and streetcorners in Malawi and Mozambique. So I bought the tape on the street and played it where ever I found a cassette player. It was universally well-received and played over and over. Tourists would be scrambling for pen and paper to write down the name of this album and I was immediately 'in' with the locals for saving them from another night of listening to the tourists play a U2 record.

It's a beautiful record, with beautiful lyrics and music. Tuku rocks!! Buy the album, see him perform all around the US (Apr/May in 2002). You will love it!

Free Music Review: This is his best album and one of the best African albums!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have 10 of his albums. This is the best, by far.
(But they are all so good.)
Why is this the best? Well, simply put, it is perfect.
Funny thing, I didn't like it the first time I listened.
But then... after three times, I was an addict. And then I read the lyrics. My GOD!
This album goes wherever I go and all my friend have bought it too.
I have seen him live three times since.
1. Dzoka Uyamwe: beautiful opener
2. Tsika Dzedu
3. Mai Varamba
4. Ndima Ndapedza: perfect whevever you are: beach; traffic; vaction.
5. Tapindwa Nei: What can I say? Words can't explain.
6. Todii: How can such a beautiful song have such intense, tear-bearing lyrics?
7. Mabasa
8. Rirongere
9. Wake Up: My new favorite on the album. Live acoustic was incredible.
But you decide... go on.
If you only want to own 5 african albums, this should be one of them.

Free Music Review: Zimbabwe Blues
Hit: 5 Stars

In my college days,I had an acquaintance from New Orleans who prided himself on his vast Otis Redding collection. In the meantime,I discovered Oliver Mtukudzi,Zimbabwe's Otis Redding.Bonnie Raitt rightly equates liking him with liking chocolate in her intro to this CD--people don't know exactly why.

This CD is filled with powerful songs. It's great to be able to read the lyrics if you're interested. The music is still enchanting&bluesy without knowing what the words are.

Oliver Mtukudzi's singing is earthy, rough, yet comforting. His backup singers are almost a gospel choir.I'm not a big fan of the blues, yet if this counts as blues music, then I'm a fan. This album is PERFECT.I can't name a single track worth skipping."Tuku Music" is a wonderful intro to Oliver Mtukudzi's spectacular music.

Free Music Review: Buy, Listen, Enjoy !!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I lived in Zimbabwe for 3 years 1997-2000 and was given this CD by a friend there. It is wonderful, lush, rythmic music. Listen to Mabasa. This track was played as a tribute on ZBC-Radio when Vice President Joshua Nkomo died in 1999. This is Shona music and Nkomo was Ndeble. (The government is Shona dominated) Rival tribes and throughout history bitter enemies. I was blown away. The song is both joyful and melancholy and melodious.Although this is a favorite song, all the tracks on TUKU are very good with excellent backing vocals and musicians.

I strongly recommend a purchase by anyone because it isn't the pre-programmed stuff played on top 40 and other formats in this country. Give it a try. You will not be disappointed. This man, this music is a gift.
