Free Music Notes for Magic: The Very Best of Olivia Newton-JohnFree Music Review: Great collection Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is a great collection for anyone who doesn't own any of the other collections released. The songs are all good samples of her work over the last 25 years or so.I do think they should have titled it "The Most Popular Hits of Olivia Newton-John" instead of the very best. As far as I'm concerned, not including one song from "The Rumor" album makes this album anything but a "Very Best" colection. But that's just my opinion, take it for what it's worth. However, my favorite has been, and remains to be, Xanadu. It is a great song from a sub-par movie and I agree with the ...reviewer that it was a highly underrated song. While this may not be anything new for anyone who already owns one of her other collections, it is a great disc for new ONJ greatest hits owners. I also agree with the others on this page in that ONJ needs to do something new! I miss her!
Free Music Review: Great Collection! Hit: 5 Stars
This collection is excellent for both the casual and hardcore fans for many reasons. This is by far the best single disc hits album, a lot better than her previous (1971-1992: the Essential Collection)! When I first bought that hits album, I was VERY disappointed. There were still TOO many "Essential" songs missing: "Let Me Be There", "Xanadu", "Make a Move On Me", and "Heart Attack", all top 10 pop hits. Thankfully, this collection includes these essential songs and even the very enjoyable "Grease Megamix"! The packaging is superb: colorful pictures and entertaining liner notes! Maybe the next step would be a box set containing 5 or 6 CDs from day one ("If Not For You" from 1971, for starters)! She deserves box set treatment! I hope everyone agrees!
Free Music Review: Pure Magic Hit: 5 Stars
As a long time Olivia fan, I was glad to see this collection of songs together for the first time. Although we have been inundated w/ several greatest hits packages, I would love for RHINO or her Aussie label, Festival, to be really brave and issue a compliation that pulls great songs from subsequent recordings since 1983. Olivia has given us many wonderful songs since TWIST OF FATE. Where are songs from WARM & TENDER? The RUMOUR was an excellent album with virtually any track deserving of attention. GAIA offered an very personal experience w/ Olivia. BACK WITH A HEART was probably one of the most underrated albums of 2001. The closest thing to a definite collection is Olivia's LIVE album. Ultimately, I am happy as long as Olivia continues to record. There are a lot of us still listening!
Free Music Review: What Back to Basics Should Have Been! Hit: 5 Stars
All of the big ones are here, all the pop culture smashes from Grease and Xanadu....the megahit "PHYSICAL" and her early number ones "I Honestly Love You" and "Have You Never Been Mellow". The sound is arguably improved as the tracks are remastered, but it's the liner notes that set this one apart. With comments from Olivia and a nice bio with some pictures from throughout her career, this is a nicely produced package and I highly recommend it to fans or people who have discovered Olivia through Grease and want to hear more. My only gripe is some mis-information that Steve Kipner produced "Twist of Fate", it was, in fact, superstar producer David Foster who produced the top 5 hit in 1983. Maybe in future editions this will be corrected.
Free Music Review: A great retrospective of a talented artist Hit: 5 Stars
Olivia Newton John has lent her voice to the memories of a new generation but many may not rememebr that she began as a Country/Western artist. The sweet lilt in her voice accentuates the emotional tug of each song. She also helps to add that special skip in the listeners' steps when dancing to the up-beat songs. A great song from ONJ's repetoire that many have often forgotten is "Xanadu" from the movie of the same name starring ONJ herself with Gene Kelly. It was a big hit in its time but was quickly forgotten when the disco/new wave era took a step back. This is a fun collection of songs that will work on the senses and have you singing along to them long after you've finished listening to the CD.
