Free Music Notes for Olivia's Live HitsFree Music Review: Olivia sounds great, but not enough songs Hit: 4 Stars
I loved the rendition on Physical. Love ONJ.Her voice is a little deeper, huskier and sultry. Just too bad there are not as many songs as on the DVD of this Sydney concert.
Free Music Review: A Very Suitable Album Hit: 3 Stars
This CD release is a selection of performances compiled from a full-length concert which is available on DVD. Having seen the video, it's my opinion that listening to this CD is a better experience. The entire concert will seem overlong to all but the most diehard fans, while this CD entertains without wearing out it's welcome too soon.
A major plus concerning this release, is that the tracks are not continuous- they have fade-ins and fade-outs. Considering that most fans might never listen to the entire album in one sitting, the tracks are suitable for adding into compilations with other artists. Perhaps the CD was planned this way, now that we are in the age of the iPod and regarding the fact that most listeners might prefer only one Olivia track at a time, dropped into a compilation with other singers.
The sound quality is smooth, detailed and mixes the perfect amount of audience-sound ambience with the performance. On the DVD release, it was sometimes painful to see Olivia's face as she strained with some of the more demanding notes. Listening to the CD is a better experience for the consumer in this aspect. Olivia deserves a great deal of admiration for braving the unforgiving exposure of a live performance, this late in her career, and holds up better than expected under the pressure.
I'd advise anyone who might enjoy a taste of what a treasured 1970's hitmaker sounds like in the year 2007 to order this CD at once. It is perhaps her most worthwhile effort in some time, after many troubled years embroiled in personal problems, health issues, and botched album projects ranging from self-help mantras, holiday carols, and poorly recieved country and standards offerings. It's wonderful to find Olivia returning to her old standby hit singles. Right along with her, may we all re-live a little bit of our youth!
Free Music Review: Half-hearted attempt at an album Hit: 3 Stars
Don't get me wrong -- there are few Olivia fans as hopelessly devoted as I am. But this album falls short of what it could have been.
Obviously, with a name like OLIVIA'S LIVE HITS, we're not expecting an album containing new or rarely-heard material. In that respect, this album covers the bases pretty well (even though a couple of the songs, like "If Not for You" and "Don't Stop Believin'," were not exactly #1 hits).
The sound quality is also quite good, with a nice audio mix. No complaints there. Unlike many live albums, it contains gaps between songs -- the applause after each song fades to silence, giving the feeling that you're listening to an edited version of a concert (which you are).
What disappointed me about the album is its length. 10 songs, less than 38 minutes of music. Not only does it leave out some of Olivia's bigger hits (songs such as "Let Me Be There," "Please Mr. Please," "A Little More Love," etc.), but it also leaves out most of the concert from which this album was taken.
The DVD of this concert contains 27 songs. The brevity of the CD is certainly not due to a lack of available material. This makes it seem as if the CD was kept short just to keep from having to pay out as much money in royalties.
Had this CD contained between 15 and 20 songs, I'd say that it was a must-own for any Olivia fan. As it is, fans are much better off just buying the DVD and not spending the extra money on the CD.
Free Music Review: Nice to Hear Olivia Again Hit: 3 Stars
I have always loved Olivia's music and was thrilled to find out that she did a new live cd of the songs I always loved. Unfortunately as much as I enjoy her and her music this was not the upbeat energy you would expect from a live recording.....She still sounds great but unfortunately it is just straight songs like it was from a studio....not the energy usually associated with live performances....If you loved Olivia you will enjoy this but if you are also excited about the idea of a true live performance you may be a little disappointed.
Free Music Review: disappointing Hit: 3 Stars
i love olivia. i have nearly anything and everything you can get. but this live cd is disappointing. olivia sounds good on all the songs...but just the few they put on the cd. this cd could have contained more songs...probably the entire concert. this is not a cd album, it is a cd sampler. if you are interested in a cd of olivia's concert perfomance order the one woman's live journey cd...that has nearly every hit she has had.
