Free Music Notes for Buena Vista Social Club Presents Omara Portuondo

Free Music Review: Understated treasure
Hit: 5 Stars

Slightly downtempo in feeling when compared to other _Buena Vista Social Club_ CDs I know. This isn't a bad thing; Omara Portuondo's sumptuous voice is at its best when she's not in a hurry.

Aside from Omara's intoxicating singing, the instrumental arrangements on this album have a cleaner and more spare sound than on other albums in the BVSC series. The players' restraint and sensitivity match her voice perfectly. There's a great deal on this album that doesn't call attention to itself, but that's well worth the time to get to know. A profoundly satisfying work.

Free Music Review: Really Great!
Hit: 5 Stars

I recommend this CD to anyone, Spanish-speaking or not. I just recently bought it, and I must say that I enjoyed all the songs, but my favorite one is "He perdido contigo". I wish I could compare her to another one of the great singers, but none come to mind. Her style and wonderful voice are unique, and her accompaniment is truly superb. This definitely won't be my last Omara Portuondo CD!

Another thing that I found particularly helpful was that Spanish as well as English lyrics are included in the booklet.

Free Music Review: Cuba's answer to Cesaria Evora
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a remarkable album. Since I discovered a way to play the tracks in random order I literally leave this CD in my car for days at a time. Somehow playing the tracks in different orders makes each track fresher. Every track in this CD is memorable ranging from romantic boleros to danceable guajiras and sons. Portuondo is Cuba's answer to Cape Verde's Cesaria Evora. If you like Evora you will love Portuondo, especially if you can understand the lyrics in Spanish.

Free Music Review: Sensual, Smoky and Moody.
Hit: 5 Stars

There are very few songs that can do what nearly every single song on this CD can do for me. You know how sometimes a song taps into some hidden or undeveloped part of who you are? Well, for me, with the exception of one or two songs here, this CD transports me to a different level. I really can't articulate it any better than that. After I listen to it, I just sashay around the house (when I used to walk). I think I'm going to go and put on something slinky now!

Free Music Review: Can't get enough
Hit: 5 Stars

I can't get enough of this CD! Omara Potuondo's voice is captivating and enchanting. The CD features many songs of liberation both in a personal sence and in a political one. The melody lines are mellow and romantic. The trumpets sound smooth and satiny. Even a non-Spanish speaker can appreciate this CD since all of the lyrics appear in both Spanish and English in the booklet. I fell in love with this CD imediately!
