Free Music Review: columbia studio productions

As the previous reviewer has written, "On Your Toes" was one of a series of studio productions by Goddard Lieberson. Columbia had done so well on sales with the original Broadway cast of "My Fair Lady", that they decided to produce these and the others that Mr. Kolnn mentioned.
The Columbia productions are gems. "Oh Kay", with Barbara Ruick, in her soft curling voice singing "Someone to Watch Over Me" is an evocative and definitive rendition.
"On Your Toes" has Jack Cassidy and Portia Nelson, and the best song must be, "There's a Small Hotel." Jack Cassidy's sweet tenor voice and Portia Nelson's breathy one, makes the duet perfect as an atmospheric prelude to making love-which looking for a small hotel is.
These Goddard Lieberson productions have been out of issue for some time, but if you are lucky enough and love Broadway musicals or their composers, there are few better.
Rodgers and Hart are so well interpreted by the company that Mr. Lieberson chose. I suppose that being studio productions, Mr. Lieberson focused on voices and interpretation as heard and not dramatic impact which would be primary on stage. He has been very successful. "Brigadoon", with Susan Johnson's frenetic singing, and the others that Mr.Kolnn listed are a necessity for Broadway lovers, after you have heard them. Of course, if you never have heard them- you're fine.
