Free Music Notes for DeliveranceFree Music Review: Opeth Maintain Their Brilliance Hit: 5 Stars
Sweden's Opeth, one of metal's finest artists of this generation unleashes one of their heaviest releases to date. Since the early 1990's, Opeth have mesmerized audiences with their fusion of progressive death metal. 2002 brought fans a metal onslaught mixed with beauty. Originally meant to be released as a double-disc with 2003's Damnation, Deliverance found itself to be another gem that Opeth has skillfully written and flawlessly recorded.
`Wreath' is a fast and heavy piece, one that immediately catches the attention of the listener with its ferocity and beautiful progressive breakdowns. Mikael Akerfeld's vocals continue to shine and his death metal growl is amongst the best in the entire genre. His clean vocals are also worthy of mention. The title track, `Deliverance,' is one of the best songs that Opeth have ever composed. This song is a fan favorite and is played on nearly every live set. `A Fair Judgement' is a beautiful track that contains one of my favorite solos that Opeth have ever done. `Master's Apprentices' is another song worth mention that has very memorable riffs along with poetic lyrics.
Do not be drawn away by six tracks total for this recording. All five songs (one of them is a short, instrumental song) are over 10 minutes long. Musically, Opeth are widely considered to be one of the most talented bands in the genre. Their live performance is also breathtaking. I have had the privilege to see them perform various times including their Chronology set in Los Angeles. Deliverance is a marvelous album to have in one's collection. I know people who do not even enjoy metal, but like pleasure in Opeth's music. These Swedish masters continue their sheer dominance with 2002's Deliverance.
Free Music Review: More Opeth Brilliance Hit: 5 Stars
In my mind, this band can do no wrong. Mikael Akerfeldt is a musical genius and there are very few people that can match his unique style of songwriting. The whole band seems a little tighter and more focused for some reason on this album. The musicianship is as always amazing. Every song is a highlight.
"Wreath" starts off with some heavy riffing and nice double bass from Martin Lopez. Speaking of Martin Lopez, he probably gives his best performance on this album. He always knows how best to add to the song. The guitar work is astounding on 'Deliverance', from the heavy and melodic riffs, to the very emotional leads, to the beautifully arranged acoustic passages. In fact, 'Deliverance' also contains some of Opeth's most beautifully done mellow moments. Such moments occur toward the end of 'Wreath', two soft passages both toward the beginning and end of the title track, and the most heavenly one of all, I think, toward the middle of 'Master's Apprentices'. Its one of those moments that gives you chills. Even the short and melancholic instrumental 'For Absent Friends' is gorgeous.
The last standout trait for this album that I'll mention is Mikael's singing, both the growling and clean vocals. In my opinion, it is his finest performance to date. His growls are some of the best in death metal, sounding evil and just plain inhuman. Meanwhile, his delicate clean singing will appeal to nearly anyone.
This was my first Opeth album, along with 'Damnation', and I feel it is probably your best place to start with this band. If not this album than 'Blackwater Park', as it is just as amazing. There are many reasons why Opeth remain my favorite band, and this album is one of them. Highly recommended.

OPETH - Deliverance
-
As Destructive as it is Beautiful: Opeth, once again, released another 5 Star album. Deliverance is a primarily heavy album yet there are lots of ambient slower passages through much of the heavy songs. (Namely Deliverance and Master's Apprentice) Oddly enough, the Deliverance Album has my favorite slower Opeth song ever, "A Fair Judgment" Which is easily one of the most beautiful songs ever. (The part that comes in a 4:00 with the classical guitars and then Mikeal's vocals at 4:35 - Is easily one of the best music passages I have ever heard.)
This album flows really well, however I would not recommend an inspiring Opeth fan start with this album. The opener, Wreath is a difficult listen for a new fan, it is lengthy, punishing, and unusually heavy. (Even by Opeth Standards) If you can however sit through that, the album unfolds into yet another Masterpiece under their belt. The jaw-dropping, Deliverance follows, (listen to the drumming at the end...) then the radiant, A Fair Judgment which leads into the brief, heartfelt, instrumental passage entitled, For Absent Friends. After that is the furious Master's Apprentice which is one of the heaviest and amazing Opeth songs to date. And to close the disk is the 14 minute marathon called, By the Pain I See in Others. (Which to this day is possible the most experimental songs by the band.) All in all, DELIVERANCE is yet another classic by Opeth... But you people should already know this so I will stop with my rant. If you don't have any Opeth Albums Buy Them! You will not be sorry.
Favorite Songs: Master's Apprentice, A Fair Judgment and By the Pain I See in Others.

Free Music Review: Mindblowingly Great! Hit: 5 Stars
Opeth is one of my favorite bands. I own all of their cd's. This cd is without a doubt one of my favorite ones. "Wreath" is such a great opening song it is unbelievable.Smadhing drums and guitars through the whole song. It also has bongos added into it, a little over half way through this 11 minute song. "Deliverance" is the best song on this cd, and one of my favorite songs of all time. It starts loud, but quickly gets slow into a great part. Then comes more bone-crushing music through the whole song. It gets slower as Akerfeldt whispers "Deliverance, thrown back at me." Followed by my favorite end to any song that I have ever heard. A stunning 4-minute session of great guitars, bass, and drums. "A Fair Judgement" is another great song. Before I heard this song I thought that "To bid you farewell" off of the Morningrise cd was the best opeth slower song. This blows that song out of the water. Great vocals throughout the whole song. The guitar solos are also so awesome. "For absent Friends" is a cool little 2-minute instrumental that warms you up for the next 2 songs. "Masters Apprentice" is probably the loudest song on the cd.It is great and has some devilish vocals in it. It slows down a little bit. Then the growls shoot back at you, out of nowhere. It really caught me off guard the first time that I heard it. "By the pain I see in others" is my second favorite song on the cd, next to the title-track.It starts out with some great guitar work. Then the most evil vocals that I have ever heard comes. After all that the evil carnival music starts off, and the song only gets better from there.
Free Music Review: Once you get past the cheese-ball "Cookie Monster" vocals... Hit: 5 Stars
This is a wicked "progressive metal" album...I'm relatively new to Opeth, having dismissed them early on, and only recently being wowed by "Damnation". That album convinced me to start working backwards through their catalogue. On this album, "Deliverance", the melodies and harmonies this band throws together cannot be denied. Most of the compositions are fairly long, and well thought out, with chugging, brutal passages blending in with softer, more melodic interludes that really create and relieve tensions. In this regard Opeth almost reminds me of a classic blues band, using slight variations of the same formula over and over again to "deliver" these musical tensions to the listener. But don't be fooled, just like a good blues artist, this formula doesn't get tired, boring, and repetitive, because it used EFFECTIVELY!!! Don't underestimate Opeth. Long ago I became sick of the cheese-ball death-metal vocals that sound like the Cookie Monster on a bad day, just for the sake of being cool, tough, and "hardcore". Well the Cookie Monster is Opeth's lead singer throughout much of this album, but despite this massive flaw, this album is a real, legitimate 5 STARS!!! IT'S THAT GOOD!!! What's scary is I'm told the album before this was even better. If it's even close, that means Opeth has 3 incredible albums under their belt. This isn't Cradle of Filth, or your typical pubescent-teenager's Swedish "hardcore deathmetal" suck band...this a true heavy metal, with vision and talent that approaches Dream Theater's mastery, combined with Pantera's power and rage...CHECK IT OUT!!!
