Free Music Review: The masters of Progressive Death strike again!
Hit: 5 Stars

Well, this album is another fantastic work of art in the incredible saga of the band, Opeth. I think these guys can do no wrong in terms of songwriting ability and musicianship. "Deliverance" is a darker and heavier Opeth which harkens back to the days of "My Arms, Your Hearse". The selection of 6 songs on this disc may seem rather small, however, at the 60 minute running time, and average of 10 minutes per song(the only exception to that average would be the 2 minute instrumental, "For Absent Friends"), the selection is very satisfying.

The songs on here are great.
Wreath - A great, brutal album opener with a nice progressive flow.
Deliverance - Classic Opeth at it's best. Great heavy parts, soft parts, musicianship etc.. One of the best songs Opeth has ever done.
A Fair Judgement - Beautiful song. The softest song on here, beautifully sung and performed.
For Absent Friends - Nice little acoustic interlude.
Master's Apprentices - The brutality is back at it's finest. The heaviest song on here with Wreath. Great tempo changes throughout.
By The Pain I See In Others - The Perfect album closer. The most progressive song on the album. This song even has little touches that I've never heard Opeth try before.

In closing, all I can say is that this is some of the best music I've ever heard, an it's making Opeth climb in my top three bands. This is an album which begs repeat listens. If you are a fan of Prog-metal, Death metal, any kind of metal, or music in general, "Deliverance" is a required purchase. I can't wait until "Damnation" comes out in March!

Free Music Review: Opeth deliver (no pun intended) once again!
Hit: 5 Stars

In their 6th observation, "Deliverance" (part one of a two cd set, the softer album "Damnation" being part two) Opeth have once again devised a breathtaking album packed with all the great elements that make their music unforgettable, raging death metal vocals and riffs to hard and progressive metal guitars melodic vocals. If you've never heard Opeth before and are asking yourself, "how is that possible?" oh trust me, it IS. At first, my favorite Opeth cd was "Blackwater Park" but now it is somewhat of a tie with this lovely piece of work up there. The opening track, "Wreath" is some of the heaviest stuff by Opeth to date, while "A Fair Judgement" sort of sounds like something that could have been on "Blackwater Park". The title track is quite possibly my favorite song on the cd, with a somewhat lengthy ending which brings to mind some very Meshuggah-esque guitar work. "For Absent Friends" is yet another beautifully written instrumental piece that serves as somewhat of an interlude so you may go about gathering your thoughts, only to be knocked on your {bottom} again. As always, each song is as long as hell (the average running time about 10-13 minutes) but it never does seem to feel like it's really that long, does it? Even on previous songs such as "Black Rose Immortal" (20-minute epic, check it out!) all of the songs feel like they are actually going somewhere and never feel drawn out or anything. Bottom line: one of Opeth's BEST to date. Definitely check it out if you're either a new fan or have been into them, you gotta pick this cd up. You won't regret it.

Free Music Review: Grandioso
Hit: 5 Stars

People don't seem to like this album very much. I'm not sure why. In my opinion it is better than "Blackwater Park", and that is really saying something. In fact, it is one of the best albums I've ever heard. Yes, it's right up there with "Master of Puppets" and the likes.

The opening track is extremely heavy, interesting and relentless, with a few tribal drums. It is quite something. Following that is the title track, which is really incredible and rhythmically mesmerizing. "A Fair Judgement" is definately my favorite; it is heavy and sad and chilling. (I think Opeth could cut out the grunting and make more tunes like this without losing any intensity. Imagine a crossbreed album of "Deliverance" and "Damnation".) "A Fair Judgement" would certainly make for an excellent suicide song. "For Absent Friends" is a little jazz/classical-type hybrid that only the likes of Opeth could pull off. "Master's Apprentices" is heavy and creepy, a fine combination. The final track is awesome, especially the circus/waltz section in the middle.

The musical theme of this album seems to me to be off-kelter syncopation. Many of the songs also deal in unusual 6/8 territory. This gives the music a frantic, driving feeling that was lacking on "Blackwater Park".

Finally, the new imagery introduced on the album cover of the old house and dolls is a very original and effective departure from the standard forest scenery on most albums of this genre.

This is truly brilliant material, folks.

Free Music Review: Opeth does it again...
Hit: 5 Stars

...But then, I'm sure you weren't expecting me to say anything else, right? Every Opeth album presents a minor tweak to the style, but it's all been essentially the same stuff: Long, complex, stunningly beautiful death/doom/black/acoustic metal songs. I bought Deliverance the day it came out, and after several thorough listens, I can say it effortlessly lives up to the standards Opeth have set for themselves.

So what does this album sound like? Well, it sounds as though Michael's Bloodbath project has had some effect on his main band, because they've chosen to scale back the complex riffs and lush washes of sound in favor of a tighter, starker sound that recalls classic death metal pioneers like Morbid Angel and Obituary, while still oozing tons of Opeth personality. The softer acoustics and clean vocals are still present, of course, but instead of blurring the lines between them, like they did on the last two albums, Opeth have chosen to play up their contrasts.

And it works. I mean, it really works. It's so good that words fail me -- But then, that's how it always is with Opeth, right? "Deliverance" probably won't sway the legions who claim "Morningrise" or "Still Life" as the best Opeth albums, but the old "best Opeth" question is beside the point. If you like Opeth, of course you need this album. If you've never heard Opeth, but you find yourself reading this review, I have no doubt you'll love them, and "Deliverance" is as good a place to start as any -- Particularly for old-school death metal fans.

Free Music Review: Blew Me Away!!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

What can i say, opeth is one hell of a kickass band. Heard about them last year from a friend and immediately read some reviews on the official site. Had to check them out right away and my god was i pleased with the result.

The first song i ever heard was masters apprentices and i fell i love with that song right away, soon went out and bought deliverance and nearly dropped my jaw. That album has got to be one of the best i have ever heard.

Wreath - Great way to start the album off, nice and heavy, great guitar work with clean vocals at parts throughout, still don't know how mikael does it but he's damn good at it.

Deliverance - Starts off heavy and quickly slows down to a nice clean vocal presentation eventually kicking it back up to heavy riffs and fast drums. My fav part has got to be around 7 mins or so right to the end, that ending part was sick.

A Fair Judgement - no screaming at all and some very nice clean vocals, very good track and a nice break from the growling and screaming.

For Absent Friends - Very nice change to the long songs before it, mellow and peaceful only building up to the next one.

Masters Apprentices - Starts out nice and heavy and keeps it that way but with all long opeth songs breaks down into clean vocals with mellow guitar and drums

By The Pain I See In Others - Longest track on the album, one of the heaviest as well, great end to a great album
