Free Music Notes for Deliverance

Free Music Review: Tied for best CD of 2002
Hit: 5 Stars

According to another reviewer, we should not "pass judgement on [Opeth] based on Deliverance". I don't see why...Deliverance ties Meshuggah's "Nothing" for best CD of 2002. In a world where metal bands tend to soften up in order to sell more albums (I.E. In Flames), Opeth and Meshuggah keep it real.

Deliverance is the best work by Opeth so far. Each song has lots of variety to it, and each section blends right in with the next. But therein lies a small problem: sometimes at the end of a song, I start thinking, "what does this have to do with the rest of the song?" The biggest example is the last three minutes of the title track. Yes, it is heavy and great, but it sounds nothing like the rest of the song! But like I said, it's a TINY complaint.

The guitar solos kick so much ass this time around. There are a couple instances in which the backing music gets kicked up a notch right before the solo starts (like in Total Eclipse by Iron Maiden)...FUN. I love it. Some songs contain multiple solos scattered throughout them. Fun stuff once again. The drummer sounds great, but I don't have the best ear for drums.

A Fair Judgement is so great too. That's a track mellow enough that you can play it for your parents! If Damnation sounds like this track, I'll buy it the day it comes out.

Anyways, I think it's wonderful. To me, this album is heavier, more complex, and more varied than any other Opeth release. An easy five stars.

Free Music Review: Opeth continue to stun
Hit: 5 Stars

Mikael Åkerfeldt and his fellow band members have done it once again. Not that anyone had doubts. With each successive release, Opeth set the bar high, and leap over it every time. Not only is Deliverance a logical extension to Blackwater Park, it is also a return to the more death metal oriented days of My Arms Your Hearse. I shall recount the night I first heard this amazing album.
The album began with the mighty Wreath. As soon as that odd time signature hit, a smile crossed my face. The song only got better. Then came the highlight of the album, the title track. From the insane opening riff, to the ensuing acoustic breakdown, the song was vintage Opeth. On to A Fair Judgement. I was confused. Was this not to be an all metal album? Were the depressing slow songs not to be on Damnation, their next album? Not that I was complaining. A break from the fury was welcome.
Next up, the instrumental For Absent Friends. A beautiful little diddle, but far from memorable. Was the album losing steam? The first few bars of Masters Apprentice restored my faith. With a Morbid Angel like riff, this was the hardest thing I had heard from Opeth since Demon Of The Fall. And finally, By The Pain I See In Others closed the album out. The vocals made my eyes shoot open. Evil at its finest. And as the haunting backwards words of Mikael Åkerfeldt faded, I again smiled.
Few too many people know the pleasure of an Opeth album. Make sure you get in on the act.

Free Music Review: I have them all, and this is the best
Hit: 5 Stars

Yes,i will get bashed for saying this, but i think this is the best Opeth cd of them all. Being said, all of their cd's are top nocth. I feel that this is a pinnacle for them, in sound and production. This band redifines music everytime they put out and album, and as soon as you turn on this disc you will see what i speak of. You may ask, what are the stand out tracks on this disc? Well, the title track, A fair judgement, and the pain i see in others, and masters apprentices are those stand outs. To listen to the soft, melodic A fair judgement, then turn around and listen to the brutal, death metal sounds of master's apprentices, you will see the great variety you get in this band. I really cant think of another band who can make such sudden breaks and tempo changes sound so crisp, and do it so many times over in one song. This isnt the 3 minute pop punk of today, these guys are real musicians who play sometimes 13 to 20 minute songs. After listening to Deliverance, i pose the question. How many drummers can you name that are better than Martin Mendez? The list will be ever so short. Some say that this is the heaviest Opeth album of them all. I have heard other songs of thiers on older albums that may be heavier, but as a whole, i think this album may be the heaviest. If you are new to Opeth, get this cd before you get damnation. Damnation was a one time experiment, and not what Opeth really sounds like, although it is a great cd as well.

Free Music Review: Opeth Remain Untouchable
Hit: 5 Stars

What can I say other than this is one of the worlds most unique metal bands. Opeth has that ineffable quality to elicit extreme emotional responses. I can't descibe with words how deeply this bands music strikes me. Deliverance is no different than thier previous albums, meaning this new batch of tunes is just as impressive as anything they've ever done. The first track on the cd is an absolutely furious piece of work, I was actually surpised at how heavy it was. The title track is an absolute piece of art! The mellow part at the ending is downright scary, this is music I hear in nightmares. The part where he sings "deliverance..." is probably the single most disturbing thing I've ever heard. These guys have tapped into a style music that is so far beyond what other bands can do. Fair Judgement is another masterwork, the vocal harmony in the middle section is absolutely divine. Masters apprentice is another godly work of art. It's kind of pointless getting too in detail about every song because there's just too much write about. This album is something I can't listen to very much because it does something to me not many albums can...it hits too deep. That might sound corny but it is the absolute truth, like I mentioned earlier, it elicits an extreme emotional response. If you are a fan of deeply moving music do not pas this experience up by any means. Opeth is unlike anything ever heard in music...get this at all costs.

Free Music Review: My favorite from Opeth
Hit: 5 Stars

First off, when you look at the track number you will realize that there are only 6 songs. Yeah, I know you will have thought "What the..." Well, I'll also tell you that their 4th song "For Absent Friends" is only 2:17! That makes 5 songs that actually have words in them. Well, the disk itself is over an hour. Amazingly, these songs are longer than most of their previous stuff.

Without 5 songs with 10+ minutes, you know you will get even more depth from the songs than Blackwater Park, although that album is the easiest to get into. I will also tell you that this album is HEAVY AS HELL at times. I've figured out a song structure in these songs - they go from heavy and unmelodic to a buildup of eery tunes. In easy terms, the beginnings of the songs aren't likely to attract you as the end of the songs. Yet, the buildup is tremendous. You'll probably read other reviews of this buildup. One reviewer had mentioned that the ending of "Deliverance" has this mysterious and mesmorizing tune. And yes, he is on the target.

The reason this is my favorite album is because it is seriously intricate. It's been a hard choice for me though. Some people don't like the direction Opeth is going, but that is only for critics, as they've pretty much stayed consistent. Add this to your list okay?

by the way, master's apprentices rules like many ppl have been saying
