Free Music Review: By Far Opeth's Best Album...
Hit: 5 Stars

Playing out like short films, all of Opeth's albums demand the listener's attention. Some dismiss them as self-indulgent prog wankery, I call it darn good music! The perfect blending of bleak acoustics, chugging melodeath lead guitars, and the tormented raspy screams all sum up the atmosphere of a dark romance or drama movie. The short breaks between passages in the scene kind of signify a "changing" of scenes, so to speak, painting a new mood. It's hard to listen to one song off of ANY Opeth album without wanting more, and "Morningrise" proves Opeth as a force to be reckoned with in metal, undoubtedly serving as their quintessential album, and the album that would soon shape their future sound. The drumwork isn't as obvious as later Opeth work, but fits the music perfectly. There are some great bass lines thrown around as well. The lead guitars use a much more melodic style here than on the following albums as well, and meld perfectly with one another.

Without a doubt, the highlight here is "Black Rose Immortal", a haunting 20-minute opus that twists and turns through so many atmospheres that it may leave the listener confused at first... Fear not, for with more listening this album will come to be understood more. Don't expect to "get" any Opeth album right off the bat. (After all, none of the songs here are under 10 minutes...) It's attention-demanding music, and takes a while to soak in... Patience is the key! But believe me... Once you do get this whole album, you'll be glad everything paid off, because you've been left with one of the finest metal albums of the 90's!

I believe this is the most moody and theatrical of Opeth's work. and the album that would define their future sound. Reccommended to fans of prog, melodic death metal, or just music in general!

Free Music Review: Much better than Orchid - less brutal, more idyllic
Hit: 5 Stars

Considered by metal gurus to be Opeth's best album to date, the Swedish quartet's sophomore effort was a definite improvement over their debut. The album has everything the original had: the dual-guitar attack, Mikael Åkerfeldt's violent screams, and significantly longer songs. The improvement is, no doubt, in the innovations. The 20-minute colossus "Black Rose Immortal" contains brief passages of Nordic folk music within the powerful death-metal movements. "The Night and Silent Water" contains a simple acoustic line that provides a sound bridge between the forceful death-metal riffs. My personal favorite on the disc is the last track, "To Bid You Farewell", of whose ten minutes, over half are acoustic and soothing. This song (along with parts of the rest of the album) showed that Åkerfeldt was capable of both screaming and letting out a delicate croon. The album's production did not change from Orchid's raw, dry metal. Both guitars are distinct, as are the other instruments. Though not as clean as Opeth's sound was to become, Morningrise was a step forward for Opeth with the continuing emergence and incorporation of softer sounds and the rising presence of Åkerfeldt's "softer" side. Stunning and epic.

Free Music Review: One of the most beautiful metal albums ever
Hit: 5 Stars

When i first got into Opeth, i was actually kinda disappointed...The 1st i got was blackwater Park, which i thought was average. This was the last i got, and man, it was well worth the wait. When i was buying it, the girl at the counter just said "this is a beautiful album" and she was not kidding.

The first thing you notice about morningrise is the vastly different style to their later albums (which mikael now admits he cant stand anymore??). Each song on this album is vastly different to the next, and even within itself there is massive variation, that is comparable to the different movements in a classical piece. Mikaels voice is brilliant, the growls arent as deep as on the later albums, but still good, and his melodic singing is as good as always. The guitars have some excellent riffs, and some excellent solos. The bassist, surprisingly is probably one of the highlights of the album, and probably better than martin mendez. There are no verified bass solos as such, but he shows his talent well. The drumming is not bad, but not as good as martin lopez.

At first, this is album can be inaccessible, "Advent" is a good song, but it will take a while to grow on you. Where this album hits you is at the very start of "the night and the silent water". It starts with an absolutely brilliant riff, youll find youreslf completely rocking to, and then mikael comes in within a scream, and it rocks into a bariation on the fist riff over the verse, which i s absolutely amazing. This song is absolutely amazing. Also, probably the jewel in opeths crown is "Black Rose immortal". This is opeths opus achievement, spanning for a 20 minutes in which there is almost no minute the same as the next or previous. This song has EVERYTHING, it is a masterpiece. If you buy this cd for nothing else, buy it for black rose.

Other than these two songs, the rest of the cd will grow on you once you understand the style they are trying to achieve. This cd is probably a more refined, more perfect version of orchid, their debut. the two songs i hev mentioned are the best, but advent, nectar and to bid you farewell are excellent. Eternal soul torture is where i stop this cd, the production just isnt good enough to listen to this song. Nonetheless, this album is well worth buying, an absolute epic.

Free Music Review: good, but not all it's cracked up to be
Hit: 4 Stars

as with any Opeth album, "Morningrise" is very good. However, the first three tracks can get a little boring, especially "Nectar". "Black Rose Immortal" and "To Bid You Farewell" are stellar, though. If you like Opeth, I'd buy this album. If you're just getting into them, i'd get "Still Life" or "Blackwater Park" instead.
