Free Music Review: Opeth - Standing above the rest of Sweden.
Hit: 5 Stars

2 years after the masterpiece Morningrise, which pushed the boundaries of what the Gothenburg/Melodeath subgenre stood for, Opeth return and are pushing them even farther. After being bored with the overused twin leads that characterized melodeath at the time of Morningrise, Opeth take a much more brutal and intense side on My Arms, Your Hearse. They add a black metal influence - an epic evil sound, extremely fast/intense music and an epic soundscape that is awe inspiring. Staying in My Arms, Your Hearse is the orchestral song writing, chorusless 6+ minute songs are what you'll find here (and on every other Opeth album).

But Opeth would not be content with only adding a black metal intensity to their sound. They are a band that evolves in such extreme ways that it is awe inspiring that every single album they release is of such high quality. My Arms, Your Hearse also has a folkloric concept behind it, a love story spanning the course of a year. Their sound also the dark folklore perfectly, the instrumentation has an almost medieval style to it, the slow acoustic interludes (much less common on MAYH than other Opeth albums) also help, and Mikael's growls truly sound demonic (listen to "Demon of the Fall" and you will see what I mean). His clean vocals are also top notch, they could easily compete with 95% of pop singers for the pure emotion and range he has with them.

Overall MAYH is a prime example of why, when I compare the death metal bands that come out of Sweden, I put Opeth in another group entirely. They evolve more than any of the others, they have the most original songwriting of basically any metal band, and their incorporation of black metal, doom metal and progressive elements makes them nearly impossible to class.

Free Music Review: One of Opeth's best albums.. Aren't they all??!
Hit: 5 Stars

Opeth's album, My Arms, Your Hearse, was my first purchase from these guys. I have been a fan of progressive death metal for a few years now, and I was told that I would really enjoy this group. My jaw dropped the first time that I heard the song, 'April Ethereal,' and the way that the song, 'When' connected and sounded like one fluent song. The song, 'The Amen Corner,' is one of the best songs on here. I love the riffs at the beginning of the song and the growls are awesome!! 'Demon of the Fall' is one of the most upbeat songs that Opeth does, and is a fan favorite for live shows. I recently saw these guys live and they are simply amazing. I was really happy when they played April Ethereal at the show along with an amazing set that spanned most of their career. Yes, Opeth closed the show with the ominous but amazing encore, Demon of the Fall. They always close with that song, and the pits just went insane!

The album carries the listener into a more mellow mood with Credence, but then picks up again with 'Karma.' 'Epilogue' is the closer with intense guitar parts and closes out the album perfectly. This album was my first purchase, as i said before, and I have added most of their albums to my collection. These guys are among the best of progressive death metal out there. Please buy their albums and see them LIVE. These guys are brutal and beautiful at the same time and have made a very good album with, My Arms, Your Hearse!

Free Music Review: Calling this a masterpiece is a gross understatement
Hit: 5 Stars

Four years ago I crossed paths with some of the most meaningful, bittersweet, and breathtaking music arrainged. I'm referring to the phenomenon from Skogsberg, Sverge known as Opeth. The first song I ever heard by this quartet was 'When'. This is one of the few, and I must emphasize FEW songs that I ever enjoyed immensely upon first listen. Everything about this song is enticing; the melodic intro which jumps into brutality that can give Deicide and Cannibal Corpse a run for their money, the following riff with the accompanying melody, the flawless mixture of acoustic interludes and the end of the song, where the music takes a soft approach with vocals and guitar lines that are far beyond beautiful, not to mention and original and interesting drum beat, so much that they often instill sadness. Throughout this song, you can almost empathize the pain and sorrow that plagues vocalist/guitarist Mikael Akerfeldt. 'When' isn't the only song on this album that conveys these emotions. Tracks such as 'April Ethereal', 'The Amen Corner' and the ultra-mellow 'Creedence' display this bands exceptional musicianship and keen ears for melody and harmony. Akerfeldts poetic lyrics and clean vocals (they still sound amazing keeping in mind he had a cold during recording) only enhance the songs' beauty. This is by far the BEST Opeth album to date. You shouldn't consider yourself an Opeth fan if you don't own this album. (and a burned copy doesn't count :])

Free Music Review: Calling this album a masterpiece doesn't do it justice

Free Music Review: A wonderful achievment from a great band
Hit: 5 Stars

The lyrics on this album are the most beautiful, haunting and memorable i have ever read. Rising above the down-on-life crap that we have to endure from most bands in this genre, they truly shine in songs like Demon of The Fall, Karma and When.

A concept album about a ghost who doesn't realise he's dead, this is one of the best albums ever to be released in the heavy-metal genres. Opeth are one of the best bands to ever record an album, and this album just steadied my belief in that.

The album art is wonderful and the standout tracks include: When, The Amen Corner, Credence and Karma.

I would recommend 'Blackwater Park' to anyone new to Opeth, that is Opeth's most straight-forward metal album to date, and is just fantastic.

All the members of Opeth are truly gifted musicians, and you can tell that they fully appreciate the bueaty that music can hold, even while the death-metal vocals are ripping you to shreds.

Mikael Akerfeldts voice is inspiring when clean, and dark and menacing when guttaral and growling. The bass on these albums really shines.

This album is definately Opeth's heaviest, thrashy and powerful, it is an album truly made by masters.

So stop reading this review and buy it now, you will be misiing out on one of the most memnorable albums of all time if you don't.
