Free Music Notes for My Arms, Your HearseFree Music Review: "the day wept on my shoulders." Hit: 5 Stars
This is my favorite Opeth masterpiece. Initially, when Opeth was still new to me, it was my least favorite. It has the dreariest, grittiest production, few acoustic guitar parts (and they are mostly short), and seems even more sonically oppressive and bleak than anything else they've done. But this album is AMAZING. It is a concept album about a ghost who seems not to realize that he's dead and he observes his lost love after his passing. "Karma" seems to be where he becomes aware of his demise and it's crushing (the scream!!! it's all about that scream). _My Arms, Your Hearse_ is heavier than _Orchid_ and _Morningrise_ but no less melodic and captivating in its evocative, spellbinding musical progression. From the haunting sounds of rain and ethereal piano notes of "Prologue", to the tidal wave of melodic riffs in "April Ethereal", to the longing, forlorn acoustic ending of "When", to the hellfire assault of "Demon of the Fall", to the smothering finality of "Karma", to the soul-melting, aching melodies of "Epilogue", MAYH is a masterpiece with few peers. No fan of progressive metal should be without this, and anyone who didn't really "get it" is strongly encouraged to give it another chance.
Free Music Review: Believe it or not: Another 5 Star Opeth CD Hit: 5 Stars
OPETH - My Arms, Your Hearse.

There is nothing I can say that will truly express how great this album is. This is Opeth's 3rd release and is their Heaviest Album... but that doesn't mean there isn't your traditional Opeth beauty you've come to expect. The fact that there are fewer softer passages only makes their beauty seem even more chilling. For example the passage on Demon of the Fall. "Run Away... Run Away...."
This album embodies some of the heaviest riffs Opeth have ever written but also includes the beutiful "Credence" which is, to this day, one of their finer acoustic passages.
If you like Opeth you should get this album. If you're new to Opeth this may not be the best starting point... (I'd recommend Still Life or Blackwater Park for starter) Either way this is another 5 Star album. Also this has two extra tracks: Maiden's 'Remember Tomorrow' and a remake of the Celtic Frost classic 'Circle of the Tyrant'. Both of which are done very well.
Favorite Tracks: When, The Amen Corner, and (of course) Demon of the fall.
5-Stars

Free Music Review: Simply the best. Hit: 5 Stars
What else is there to say about the infamous, brilliant underground band, Opeth, that hasn't been said before? Well, My Arms, Your Hearse, being a masterpiece, certainly boosts the bands image even though it is the 1998 United States debut. This album is everything you'd want in a metal album, and even with the instrumentals and acoustic track, they all add to the theme of the album, a ghost story. (Read the lyrics and you'll know what I mean.) PROLOGUE- Can't really rate this one, its just a 59 second track of sampled rain. APRIL ETHEREAL- 10/10 My second favorite song on the album. Brutal guitar, double bass, punishing vocals, and a gorgeous, short melody. WHEN- 9/10 Great song, acoustic passages really fill it out and the outro melody owns. MADRIGAL- 11/10 Simply the best instrumental ever written. THE AMEN CORNER- 9/10 Its a great song. DEMON OF THE FALL- 10/10 Another gem, a must hear for every metal head. CREDENCE- 100/10 My favorite acoustic song ever, it's beautiful, you have to hear it. KARMA- 7/10 My least favorite on the album, but still good. EPILOGUE- 9/10 Good Instrumental and really closes the album well.
Free Music Review: Opeth's unrivaled dark masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
Quite simply a masterpiece of dark, dreary and atmospheric metal. This was the first Opeth album I ever got and it is still my favorite. Although "Still Life" has more complex musical structures nothing tops the grim and oppressive atmosphere of MAYH. It's fast, heavy and melodic in almost every track which is something difficult to achieve in metal.
Too me music is not about how fancy and technical it is but how much emotion and atmosphere it conveys. This is not the most technical of experimental Opeth record but for sheer dark beauty it is unmatched. If I were new to the band and had the choice bewteen "Still Life" and this one I would suggest this one without a second thought. The music, the lyrics and the atmosphere will suck you in. The Highlights? For me it is "When" and "The Amen Corner" since both tracks highlight the best elements this album has to offer. "When" is an epic and dark track filled with haunting lyrics, melody and beautiful clear vocal passages towards the end which I can listen to over and over again. "The Amen Corner" is just a nice straight up metal track but with melodic elements and catchy riffs that stick with you.
Free Music Review: eerie circles upon the waters...a haunting macabre of sound! Hit: 5 Stars
where did these guys come from???...like lightning in a bottle, this is one of the most brilliant albums since Metallica's "Master of Puppets". The musicianship and conceptual aspects of this production are quite profound. Opeth fuses both light and darkness into something wicked but beautiful, not to mention spine-tingling. When i listen to this album i "actually" feel as though i'm careening unseen through forests and lurking in shadows...spurning the sun and screaming past the moon...reaching out for her. The energy, scope and genius of this album is both beautifully and brutally displayed through "When", "The Amen corner", "Demon of the fall", and "Credence". It is relentless in it's execution and undaunted in it's in-your-face presentation. You get the feeling there was a wicked grin on the faces of all the band members as they frolicked through the time signatures, crescendos and tempo changes. This was my first introduction to Opeth and Michael's contrasting style has grown on me; i could'nt imagine him any other way...it defines the band perfectly. Open, imaginative minds only for this disc...and if you have one, it'll seep inside and surprise.
