Free Music Review: Opeth's best Hit: 4 Stars
This was the first Opeth album I ever bought, and the first non-traditional metal album in my collection. What drew me to this cd were the lyrics, undoubtedly some of the most...I can't find a word...profound, dark, beautiful, melancholy, moving...lyrics of any metal band I've come across. Opeth are magnificent songwriters, and, even if - in my opinion - their music rarely matches up to the lyrical promise, it is worth getting at least one album of theirs just for this.
I can't decide whether this or 'Blackwater Park' is Opeth's heaviest, but this definitely has the better songwriting. There's no way to describe the contents, just read them yourselves and weep. Opeth, I think, are not really a very heavy band, and that is why I've moved away from them to darker territory, such as true death, black, and viking metal. Nevertheless, this is the one album of theirs which I still play. It is wonderfully heavy in parts, but the softer interludes and clean vocals add to the atmosphere here, not as annoying as in Opeth's other work. 'When', 'The Amen Corner' and 'Demon of the Fall' are great tracks, and the two Celtic Frost covers (from the time before they turned glam and were still death/black) are excellent too.
If you get one Opeth album, make sure it's this one. The lyrics are worth the experience, and for once, the music is almost up to scratch. Not the heaviest band out there, but this is their contribution to death metal, and is as such a progressive yet heavy masterpiece. This and 'Blackwater Park' are the only pieces worth obtaining for fans of metal; don't listen to the people who say 'Deliverance' is Opeth's heavy album, it doesn't match this. At least read the lyrics - always the best part of Opeth.
Free Music Review: Opeth's Best Album? Hit: 4 Stars
I have to disagree with those who rave about this album. There is great contention about which album is Opeth's best (some say Blackwater Park, some go with Orchid, still others will argue for Morningrise), but I find those that argue for this album are just...wrong...
It's a good album. But there's something that on first listen I just couldn't put my finger on. Somehow, it's different from other releases. There seemed to be a lack of inspiration in the music that you don't feel in, say, Blackwater Park. Then I checked the Opeth website, and there I found my answer. Akerfeldt wrote the lyrics for My Arms, Your Hearse BEFORE he wrote the music, something he had not done before. More obvious, there's a prologue and an epilogue. Furthermore, Akerfeldt had a sore throat while recording this, which severely affected his voice (some say for the better, but I feel like it sounds more like a typical death growl than the growl I became familiar with on Deliverance).
However, these are all just my opinions, and while I do believe this is the worst Opeth release yet, look at the rating I've given it. It is definitely not a bad album. And you might pick it up and disagree with me and believe it is Opeth's best. What you really want to know if you are reading this is whether this album is worth your money. And it is. If you can afford it, though, buy this with Blackwater Park. Then you can decide.
Oh, and "When" is an awesome song. The other highlight for me is "Karma".
Enjoy. This is my favorite band now for a reason.
Free Music Review: it was called their best... but i didnt see it that way... Hit: 4 Stars
My Arms your Hearse was being raved about on this website, and it was the only Opeth record i didn't have, so I bought it. Well, it is good, like all opeth, but its definitely not one of my favorites. People were calling this their best? NO WAY. However, it is good, but I just cant get into it as much as their other albums. I dunno, maybe im just freakin retarded. After all, i do think blackwater park is their best, and i could get shot by other opeth fans for saying that. Anyway, heres a tracklisting.
Prologue- a cool litte piano intro, but not really a song.
April Ethereal- cool song, pretty heavy, i dig it.. 5/5.
When- another cool song... but reminds me of the one before.. 5/5.
Madrigal- another cool instrumental by opeth.. at least i think it is, i dunno i havent listened to this album in a while. 4/5.
The Amen Corner- i love this song, its one of my favorites on the album, i love the connection of the intro to the outro of madrigal. 5/5.
Demon of the Fall- my favorite song on the album, i love the ending, its kickass. 6/5
Credence- a cool song, but not one of opeths best non heavy songs... 4/5.
Karma- i love this song, the guitar during one part is awesome, it sounds like a storm brewing or somethin evil rising.. i love it. 5/5.
Epilogue- another cool little dingy like prologue.
Free Music Review: The last interesting Opeth album... Hit: 4 Stars
I know some people are going to be very displeased with this review but hey this is my opinion so respect it as I do yours. Truth is, I never got into the next albums they released. Still Life and Blackwater Park were one of the same while Deliverance was forced and entirely uninteresting to my ears. I just hoped they would return to the greatness of the first 3 albums so I decided to review this one. "My Arms, Your Hearse" is by all means a brilliant album. Everything Opeth fans liked in the first two album is here. This time Mike sings with a slightly different style which he will adapt in the next albums (I kinda prefered his singing in the first two albums) making his growls sound very raw. The album is supposed to be a concept album and the storyline flows really well. Nevertheless a very interesting album. Still waiting for their comeback...
