Free Music Notes for Watershed (w/DVD)

Free Music Review: For a metal album, there's very few metal songs in it.
Hit: 3 Stars

I had picked this up as something to listen to, being a fan of almost every kind of metal that I can name. I've heard a lot of praise for Opeth and thought I'd give them a shot with Blackwater Park. Didn't really suit my tastes at the time, but I heard they had a new album out and gave them a second shot.

All I can definitely say is that this is an album that I would not say is for everyone. First of all, it heavily feels like a mix track. The first song, which is mostly just acoustic guitars and light vocals with some melody made me wonder what I was about to get into with this album. When the second song played things started to pick up, but once that was over the rest of the album continued off just like the first song did with occasional melodic death metal rhythm. I got rather tired of it right away to be honest and I don't think aside from the second song, which is very good, I will be listening to this full album at all. I will say though that it made me go back and listen to Blackwater Park and made me appreciate that album much more.

In the end, as far as I can say who this album is for; if you're a fan of Opeth then I assume that you'll enjoy this album. But if you're discovering Opeth for the first time because of some recommendations, I suggest looking into Blackwater Park first as that seems to be their better album out of their discography.

Free Music Review: My second Opeth disappointment
Hit: 3 Stars

Opeth is without a doubt my favorite band of all time. I was looking forward to Watershed a great deal. Unfortunately, it left me in the same frame of mind as Deliverance. I realize I'm in the minority of Opeth fans in saying this, but Deliverance was my least-favorite album of theirs. At least, until Watershed came out -- it now takes the bottom spot. Production is great, augmented instrumentation (strings, oboes) are a nice touch, Mikael's clean singing continues to impress. But the simple fact is that Martin Lopez is a god among men and no one can possibly replace him, period. Other reviewers have commented on the album's lack of focus and I agree. I'm all for being eclectic and embracing diverse influences, but the entity being influenced must have some innate cohesion, which Watershed doesn't. I've done my duty by purchasing and listening to it a dozen or so times, but to be honest I doubt it will make an appearance in my CD player more than once a year. I hope they get back on track with their next release because as I said at the outset, they are absolutely my favorite band.

Free Music Review: A New Chapter Opens
Hit: 3 Stars

This release marks the most dramatic change in the band's history. The departure of Martin Lopez and Peter Lindgren left a vacuum that was filled by Martin Axenrot and Fredrik Akesson. The new band members are both very talented, but very different than their predecessors. Martin Axenrot's style is a more traditional Heavy Metal/Hard Rock variety and Fredrik Akesson style is that of a traditional shredder. For this release, Mikael Akerfeldt decided to take an unusual turn and write material that sounds more traditional than on any of the band's prior releases. The fact that a good portion of the music is written in major keys adds to the perception. Listen closely and you will hear everything from "Acid Rock" to "Jazz" coming out of your speakers. It just seems to me that the band takes this release in too many different directions. Unlike the band's prior efforts, there is an uncharacteristic lack of cohesiveness here.

Free Music Review: Opeth turned neutral.....
Hit: 2 Stars

I have listened to this album at least a dozen times, and nothing sticks out like their other albums. Not only that, but upon purchasing the deluxe edition, I find out I wasted my money because the bonus tracks can't even be converted. One is stuck with only listening to them on the stupid and pointless dvd. Roadrunner records once again proves to be a sellout record company with no perks. Hopefully Opeth gets back on track and doesn't let the company make all the rules.

Free Music Review: This group has chanced it sound
Hit: 2 Stars

There is nothing wrong with chancing your bands sound, my problem is that maybe two songs had growling vocal and the rest was clean vocal for which he does well, but to me I like the old stuff like still life and the dvd is a waster of money because it;s the same thing has the cd so buy this if you want but sadly I sold it to a friend etc,,,,
