Free Music Review: 2.5 stars - technically competent and utterly soulless power metal

Swedish "supergroup" Opus Atlantica released their self-titled debut in 2003. The band, which featured vocalist Pete Sandberg (ex-Alien), Jonas Reingold (Flower Kings) and Johan Reinholdz (Andromeda), plays symphonic power metal along the same general lines as Stratovarius, Rhapsody and Dragonforce.
Given the players involved, I have to say I expected a lot better. Opus Atlantica seems to combine the worst excesses of the genre with none of the charm. There's a ton of "tweedly-deedly" guitar and keyboard wankery, Sandberg's vocals seem thin, the production is cold, and the songs just aren't very well written. Stratovarius can get away with this kind of music because they always give you a melody you can hold on to. Opus Atlantica may be the first Swedish metal band that fails in that respect. I prefer Dragonforce to this, and that's saying something!
I'll give the Opus Atlantica debut a 2.5 star rating. Even though I really didn't enjoy it, I have to respect the players involved and give them credit for technical competency. If you're looking for good melodic power metal with a strong technical element, there are plenty of bands that play that kind of music better than Opus Atlantica. Fortunately this is the band's only release.
