This is a unique body of work. Orff composed the music placed to secular poetry. I have heard several versions of the content of this poetry and don't know if there is any truth to one which says it contains risque subject matter. In any case, it is very lyrical and cohesive. Orff was able to pull off a meld of ancient with modern. There are some beautiful passeges. It is no wonder that Renee Fleming has added the solo from Carmina Burana, "In trutina," to her signature CD: Renee Fleming - The Beautiful Voice. And she sings it like no other.
Ozawa's recording of this great piece is admirable. The soloists sing beautifully and the orchestra compliments the pieces. Certainly other recordings may please individual preferences better but I find this to be a fine rendition and exemplary of Orff's contribution of this modern classic.
