Free Music Notes for Disney's The Little Mermaid (2008 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: Awesome CD Hit: 4 Stars
This musical captures the whole movie and adds to it. It ends with Ariel saving the day instead of prince Eric. The cd has all of the original songs and more that really ties in with the other ones. I absoloutely love this cd and I recomend it to any one who likes The Little Mermaid and if you've never seen it try this cd because it has some wonderful music.
Free Music Review: Beauty and the beast under the sea Hit: 3 Stars
Yes the Disney organisation have done it again from their formula factory. Bringing the music from the animated film to the stage. A somewhat predictable score to the stage such that you can hear the formula work as if Beauty and Beast had been dragged under the ocean. This show is great for kids don't get me wrong and I hope it runs for many many years on Broadway and maybe London. We may even get to see in Australia. BUT..Unlike the Lion King and Tarzan which both really stepped out onto the stage with a true wide appeal and an innovatively staged musical style that could appeal to everyone, I think the The Little Mermaid is more in a formula that one would expect in the electric light parade at Disneyland. Even though there are a huge number of new songs written for the stage production, they feel very Disnofactory in their style.
The one high point for me however is Shiree Rene Scott, who is deliciously camp and evil as Ursula (so often the case with disney women) that she really does steal the show and the music every night! I still don't quite get how she is supposed to be related to her brother Tritan..kinda just misses me completely!
The voices are great, and as usual, Disney is able to gather the cream of the crop when it comes to vocal talent and of course stunningly good looking men and women at the same time.
Take your little girls to see the show. They will love it but its not musically challenging enough for adults I am afraid.
Free Music Review: UNFATHOMABLE! Hit: 2 Stars
While quality, original productions like In The Heights and Passing Strange struggle to find their voices on Broadway, the Disney Machine continues to pump out recycled versions of already successful, enjoyable cartoons. The latest to take the plunge is Mermaid, which had the promises of being a good Broadway musical - once upon a time.
But, alas, me maties, alas.
First of all, Tritan and Ursala should not be brother and sister. Ick.
Second of all, ten new songs written for the stage is nice, but - 1. none of the songs further the story, and 2. none of the new songs blend in with the existing ones.
Also, does EVERYONE need to have a song? The only one spared a tune of his own is poor Flounder, and as humorous as Scuttle is, "Human Stuff" and "Positoovity" make the action ebb rather than flow. The Mersisters' 50s-flavored "She's In Love" sounds like a Grease drop-out, and "Sweet Child" by Flotsam & Jetsam is sour.
King Triton comes across as more evil than caring, but let's talk about Ursala. Sherie Renee Scott is terribly talented but terribly miscast as Ursala. She would have fared better as an Ariel. Her opening number "I Want the Good the Times Back" is less villianous and more vaudeville, and "Poor Unfortunate Souls" lacks all the delicious menacing flavor it should have.
Sebastian is void of the rugged characterizations associated with the part, and Prince Eric sings the obligatory handsome-leading-man-torch song with a gorgeous voice. However, it might have been more interesting had he been offered another verse of "Part of Your World" to provide an ironic touch.
To be fair, Sierra Boggess make a delightful Ariel, and her hopeful poignancy makes "Part of Your World" worthy of a Tony nomination. Okay, so she gives up her voice, but it's a shame that the title character of a musical swims on 2 full songs out of 29.
So, in short, The Little Mermaid, tanks, drowns, plunges, and ebbs. Let's sit back and wait for Enchanted-The Musical.
Free Music Review: A black King Trident! Hit: 2 Stars
Yup,when King Trident appeared you could see the audience whisper to each other and the confusion among the kids, like my 3 girls, ages 6,8, and 11.Ariel is as white as can be which made it so bizzare. It's like having a white Porgy or Bess or a non-jewish fiddler on the roof.Could you imagine the uproar. The show was just o.k. Better than Lion King(which isn't hard to do with people running around holding a paper mache face), but not even close to Beauty and The Beast, which was great.
Free Music Review: Painful!! Hit: 1 Stars
Painful to listen to. With the single exception of Sierra Boggess as Ariel, the rest of the cast are awful and as Ursula, Sherie Renee Scott should win an award for the worst performance on Broadway. She sounds like a talentless high schooler in a bad production. Horrible!! None of it can hold a candle to the original cartoon. Just another step in the corporate takeover of Broadway by Disney. God help Broadway!
