Free Music Notes for Disney's The Little Mermaid (2008 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: A Gem of a Musical Hit: 5 Stars
This soundtrack is certainly a gem. I have heard the soundtracks for many other Disney Broadway shows, and while they are certainly good, I'd have to say that this is my favorite. It contains songs from the movie as well as some new, catchy songs. I haven't seen the show...in fact, I've never seen any Broadway show. But for someone who hasn't, a good recording is even better.
Sierra Boggess shines in her role as Ariel. Her voice is young and fresh, but sounds similar enough to Jodi Benson's that I can easily accept that it is Ariel singing. Sherie Rene Scott as Ursual, though, is the female cast member who really impresses me. I read a review that said her voice is like that of a high-school performer's. I have to highly disagree. While it is a much younger voice than the original Ursula, I think it is fantastic. I actually like to listen to "Poor Unfortunate Souls" now... And Tituss Burgess as Sebastian is superb. I don't even know how to describe how fun his songs are.
For people who love the original movie and music, this may be a waste of time. I do enjoy the originals, but I'm also open to new things. I really enjoy this recording, but I wouldn't promise that everyone else will. If you like different versions of songs and such, or if you enjoy Broadway, I think there is a good chance you'll like this recording.
NOTE: As of March 2009, this soundtrack is being sold Used and New on amazon for about $10. However, yesterday several people were selling it for $2--used and new. Then I got on again today and checked and the only copies left were again $10. Check back everyday if you really want a good deal and don't mind a used copy.
Free Music Review: Magical moments with Disney's lovely musical Hit: 5 Stars
I'm listening to the cast-recording while I'm typing this review. It's the fourth of fifth time I'm listening to the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid - and let me tell you, I'm never bored of the music on it. In fact, the translation of the movie to the stage is so magnificent I had to order the Beauty And The Beast cast-recording, and I'm planning on getting the Tarzan cast-recording soon as well. I guess the Disney's magic is really working when coming to life on stage, and in the musical orchestration.
In this particular adaptation to the stage, the crew of actors and singers, producers and writers did a wonderful job. All the songs are lively, easy to get into, catchy - all my favorites songs from the original movie are here, and also some new songs that really add to the spirit of the story! The lead singers for Ariel and Prince Eric gave me reall goosbumps. They're that good. This CD is really worth the money you'll pay on it, and if you love Disney's animated film or you are a musical-fan, it's a perfect cd to listen to. I just wish Disney company will come out with some more musicals based on their lovely classic animated films, say Pocahontas or Aladdin. I can picture even Mulan as a good musical.
Anyway, I'll keep looking out for their musical adaptations in the future, because there is so much magic in the music written for those films, and in the stories they're based on. Kids and grown-ups can enjoy it alike, and I'm almost 30 years-old, so I can tell! Don't hesitate on buying this gem of a musical... you'll be glad you did so. Enjoy every minute 'Under the Sea'.
Free Music Review: Amazing! Hit: 5 Stars
Coming from someone who is in love with The Little Meraid as a movie, I could not wait for the movie to come to life on Broadway. The Soundtrack is filled with upbeat songs that parents and children alike could enjoy. No more car rides, where the parents are subject to songs like the wheels on the bus to appease their children.
Sierra Boggess does a great interpretation of the songs that Jody Benson recorded to perfection for the movie. Her voice is so similar, that it is remarkable to see a cartoon come to life in such a way. Performing "Part of Your World" and "The World Above" with the new song "Beyond My Wildest Dreams", Sierra makes an amazing Broadway debut. Tituss Burgess, as Sebastian hits all the right notes and manages to add more compassion to the character. The Broadway version brings to light a number of new songs, sung by Prince Eric which to me, complete the movie. Sean Palmer makes the perfect prince with an unremarkable voice in the addition of the songs "Her Voice" and "One Step Closer". His voice and the passion inside will bring tears to your eyes. The CD includes all favorites with some unnecessary, yet great additions to the score. The song "If Only (quartet)", track #25, sung by Sierra Boggess, Sean Palmer, Tituss Burgess and Norm Lewis as King Triton is my favorite.
Free Music Review: IT IS WAAAAY BETTER THAN I EXPECTED... EXCELLENT!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I just couldn't wait to listen to this soundtrack so I put it on my cart before it was released, because I was sure it was going to be great.. I am a Disney fan but I specially love musicals and I love everything Disney has made for Broadway.. so the little mermaid was not the exception.
As soon as it arrived I started to listen to it and from that day on I can't stop it is way way better than I expected, even though I knew it was going to be something big... you can tell that the composers really know the story and knew the exact points to add new songs, and even when Ariel has lost her voice, the composers cleverly wrote songs for her to sing but it is understandable that it is representing Ariel's feelings.. Sierra Bogess is excellent and I think she was wisely chosen to play The little mermaid.. she really sings like a mermaid... I mean the whole cast is excellent.
My favorite song is "if only" which is a quartet between Ariel, Eric, Sebastian and Triton... it is so dramatic yet so catchy, this is the song that makes you say "I NEED to se the play!!!"
In conclusion it is a great soundtrack that is you love Disney and good musicals is a must have!!!
Free Music Review: FIN-TASTIC' Hit: 5 Stars
"The Little Mermaid" swims along a wave of melody gathering a net full of treasures from under the sea. And speaking of which who can resist the steel drum Jamaican inspired rhythms of "Under The Sea" merrily sung by Tituss Burgess as Sebastian the happiest crab in the ocean and Mr Burgess later on sings a calypso flavored tune as he tries to coax Prince Eric to "Kiss The Girl". Pretty Sierra Boggess as Ariel and the even prettier Sean Palmer as Prince Eric have a series of lovely songs including Ariels' "Part of Your World" and new songs for Prince Eric, "One Step Closer" and "Her Voice".
Then there is the force of nature named Sherie Rene Scott. Miss Scott is a shameless scene-stealer and as Ursula the Sea-Witch she grabs the show by each of her eight tentacles. Twice in Act One she stops the show-a new song "I Want The Good Times Back" and her idea of a good time is anything but. Then she brings the curtain down with "Poor Unfortunate Souls". It's a shame Sherie Rene Scott can't be in every show-she is to quote myself,"Fin-tastic".
The 29 tracks fill a treasure chest of jewels and not a zircon among them. Enchanting, just enchanting.
