Free Music Review: Amazing Soundtrack to an Amazing Game

Hearing these oldies ressurected (haha, get it?) in the form of transformed indie-rock covers is nothing short of a delight. "Lonesometown" is by far my favourite track.
I've noticed a recurring pattern in the theme of these reviews: the reviewers haven't played the game, but still love the soundtrack. That's all well and good with me, but I got the game the day it came out and played it through in about 9 hours. Not only is the game positively incredible (it actually includes a Parapa-esque zombie dance-off to four of these songs), but it is altogether complimented by this amazing collection of oldies-cum-newies. So in lieu of that, I would recommend playing the game to gain a full appreciation of the soundtrack. Unfortunately the better half of the songs actually aren't heard in the game, and those that are are emphasized over-enthusiastically ('Lollipop' especially; they got that one in there every chance they could), but they all fit the same motif, and the motif, as a whole, is just plain fun. Who hasn't fantasized about walking around a pseudo-futuristic 1950's metropolis as an undead travelling salesman from the 30s? I know I have.
Sceptics and elitists will be glad (or apathetic) to know that these new bands (none of which I am particularly fond of myself) have not butchered the sounds of the older songs at all, but have instead revived them into something new and different, something contemporary, something that is, frankly, completely kick-ass.
Good for music-lovers, amazing for fans of the game.

You don?t have to be a gamer to enjoy the soundtrack to Stubbs the Zombie, but you do need a taste for irony, mixed with a moderate helping of kitsch. The concept is simple yet entertaining: hire a handful of very well-known "alternative bands," (The Flaming Lips, Death Cab, The Dandy Warhols) and have them rock to the oldies. Cake's "Strangers in the Night" is the best track hands down--you'll definitely want to spin this at your next cocktails-and-Halo-soiree--followed by the Ravonettes' "My Boyfriend's Back" (which also appears on Pretty in Black). But everyone does a fine job. These are songs that most people know like the back of their hands, so no big surprises--just a few giggles. Pop it into the disc player and enjoy... with or without brains. --Leah Weathersby
