Free Music Notes for Juno

Free Music Review: "If You Were a Wink, I'd Be a Nod..."
Hit: 5 Stars

Sometimes it takes a few listens to get into a CD. Other times, right away you know from the first notes, that you'll be listening to the CD a few million times and it will constantly be going in the ol' player (or itunes, car stereo ETC). The soundtrack to the movie "Juno" is one of those cases.

For those who don't know, the film "Juno" is a comedy/drama about a teenager named Juno MacGuff, who finds herself pregnant after sexually experimenting with her best friend, Paulie. We follow Juno, her family, friends, and acquaintances through the nine months of her pregnancy and all the 'Sturm & Drang', that goes with it. This film is quite a rarity, because it is a Hollywood movie comedy about teen prenancy, that actually treats its characters and their situation with both wit, intelligence and respect. And one last word about the film itself...yes the film's characters and humor are quite "quirky". I know this word is waaaayy over used by many reviewers, but darn it, the film is just "quirky".

That feeling of 'quirkiness' seems to extend to the soundtrack. The music seems to portray the same style of humor, wit and intelligence of the characters in the film. One could just imagine that the acerbic teen, Juno, in a mellow moment, might actually listen to this CD (and like it!). Most of the music on this soundtrack could best be described as "anti-folk". This is sort of funny term, that seems to meet with a variety of definitions. To me it just seems to be folk music, that dosn't take itself too seriously, yet still has an attitude. Sort of like a bratty teenager. This is best encompassed on the soundtrack in the music of Kimya Dawson, who performs both solo and with the groups 'The Moldy Peaches' & 'Antsy Pants'. There is just something so hummable, chuckle inducing and addictive about her music. I love songs like "Anyone Else But You", "My Roller Coaster" and "Tire Swing". If you put these songs on in the morning, I can guarantee you'll still be hearing them in your head, while your getting to sleep at night.

The other songs are also great. I really love the precociousness of the songs of 'Belle & Sebastion' ("Piazza, New York Catcher", "Expectations") as well as the cuts from Cat Power ("Sea of Love") and Barry Louis Polisar ("All I Want is You"). Great stuff!! I even like that creepy version of the Carpenter's "Superstar" as performed by Sonic Youth. All these songs go so well together.

If I have but one bone to pick with this soundtrack, is in it's use of 'Classic Rock'. Don't get me wrong, I'm an old fart, who loves 'Classic Rock' (the lack of space in my condo due to my CD collection proves this)! But some of it works (The Velvet Underground, Buddy Holly) while some of it dosn't (The Kinks, Mott the Hoople). These are all great groups performing wonderful classic songs. I love them to bits. But the ones that don't work, just seem to interrupt the mood and flow of the CD. But this is really a small complaint. In the end if you havn't seen this movie, then go see it! After one viewing you'll be buying or downloading this recording. It's that good.

Free Music Review: 1 in 1 Million, probably...
Hit: 5 Stars

Ah, Juno. "The little movie that could". I know that dozens, if not hundreds, of reviews just like this have already been written, but I just have to speak, er, rather, type my mind. Let me begin by stating that I have been in love with this movie since I first even heard about it in late summer of last year. At the time, I was raving about this movie that looked amazing, but because no one had really heard of it, everyone sorta ignored me. A few months later, this movie is the most popular one in the country. I'm just saying. Anyways, having previously stated my love for this movie, it is rather obvious that I would love the soundtrack too. And I know I'm not the only one, seeing as how the soundtrack remained at the top of the charts for weeks, and continues to be in the top 10 of overall albums and number one in soundtracks. On to the music. As a collection, its quirky and low-fi, which just so happens to be a desirable characteristic in the music I devote my time to. The abundance of anti-folk made me INCREDIBLY happy. Being a fan of the Moldy Peaches, I was stoked to see the name Kimya Dawson printed all over the back of the case [as well as the Moldy Peaches themselves]. I was also pleasantly surprised by a band I had never heard of before, Belle & Sebastian. The Scottish indie pop band creates truly memorable songs that stick in your head and refuse to leave. I cannot review every song individually, so I will just state one simple word to sum up the loveliness that is the Juno soundtrack. Brilliance.

Free Music Review: This is a good soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

I listened to this soundtrack online before I bought it. I love the music on here. The music fits the theme of the movie well. My favorite track is "Anyone Else But You" performed by the movie's two stars. It is an excellent song about friendship and love. The Moldy Peaches version is good too, but I like the version with two young actors better. "All I Want Is You" is a easy listening song by Barry Louis Polisar. It has a nice blue grass sound to it. I like the guitar and harmonica playing on this track. I also loved "All The Young Dudes" by Mott the Hoople. It is a classic song written by David Bowie. I love Ian Hunter's vocals and the opening cords of this song very much. I have never heard of Kimya Dawson, but I think she has a sweet voice on the track she sings here especially "Tire Swing" and "Tree Hugger". Cat Power's rendition of "Sea Of Love" is pretty romantic. I like this track very much. The Kinks "A Well Respected Man" is a tribute to all the guys out there who work hard and try to do the right thing. I'm Sticking With You is a good song about loyalty. I think the Velvet Underground harmonize well on this track. "Superstar" by Sonic Youth is kind of too slow for me. "Vampire" is a cute track. This song has an innocent sound to it. I love the guitar strumming here. This is an excellent soundtrack to one of the year's best movies.

Free Music Review: A Good Kind Of Quirky
Hit: 5 Stars

The JUNO SOUNDTRACK is off beat and zany, but it is great fun to listen to. This CD is enjoyed by everyone in my family: my husband, 11 year old daughter, 3 year old daughter, and me. It is one of our favorite CDs to listen to in the car, and since we all have such divergent tastes, that says a lot right there.

The first song, "All I Want is You" is a favorite of the 3 year old. She calls it "The Harmonica Song," and knows all the words better than I do. The lyrics to this folksy song are very cute, and it is accompanied by, of course, a harmonica as well as an acoustic guitar. This is one I don't mind listening to repeatedly, as is her wont at this age.

The rest of the songs are equally whimsical and quirky, some without words, some you have heard before ("Dearest" by Buddy Holly), some interesting, all just plain enjoyable. The voices are all earthy and unique, and I find myself drawn to them. It is kind of like being at a sing-a-long with a bunch of close friends.

The JUNO SOUNDTRACK is great for my family during long car trips. There is peace, harmony, good music, and no bickering. Hey, that alone makes this a highly recommended and very valuable asset.

Free Music Review: Great soundtrack for superb film
Hit: 5 Stars

A great soundtrack for a terrific film. Most of the songs are soft, eccentric, and folky (or anti folky, as those who know more than I do call the style). Being in my fourth decade of existence, I wasn't aware of most of these bands (I stopped following rock closely in my twenties) but they are really good. I didn't knew who Kimya Dawson and the Moldy Peaches were before seeing the movie, but I can say now their songs are terrific - I love Tire Swing, Loose Lips, Tree Hugger and Anyone else by You - the latter is a leit motif during the film, as is played several times there, including a moving finale with the two main actors, Ellen Page and Michael Cera playing it. I also love All I Want is You by someone called Barry Louis Polisar - the song appears on the film's opening credits, and its use of harmonica is reminiscent - with all the distances, of course - of early Bob Dylan. There are also some older songs, like the great Dearest by Buddy Holly, The Kinks "A Well Respected Man", Sonic Youth's cover of The Carpenter's Superstar, a cover of Sea of Love by someone I don't know, and The Velvet Underground's I'm Sticking with You. Don't miss this soundtrack.
