Free Music Review: A Soundtrack to a Landmark Film
Hit: 5 Stars

I just came back from watching this film and I can't get this movie out of my mind. I think the best way to describe this film is how I read in one review; "a visual album." I think this movie marks the beginning of the modern musical. The film is filled with one great song after another but effortlessly transitions from dialogue into song. However, this movie is more than just a great musical, it's a great love story. After seeing this film, I went on my laptop and ordered this album as quickly as I could. Since I haven't listened to the album outside of the film, I'll focus my commentary on the film itself. The leads have great chemistry and the script masterfully invites the viewer to see how their love unfolds. I must warn people interested in seeing this film that I love for this type of music is necessary to fully appreciate this film. It is along the lines of Damien Rice (the leads were the opening act on one of Damien Rice's tours). This movie is one of the most genuine films I've seen in a long time, something that means a lot amidst the Hollywood films of recent years. I highly recommend this film, but caution an interested viewer to know what there in for before they watch this film.

Free Music Review: Once - Go out and buy it
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not going to write any long boring review - I will just say this:

Featuring thirteen tracks played either on acoustic guitar or piano or a lovely combination of the two, Once (the movie) is a showcase for two people who are musicians first and actors second.

The songs here take you through the journey of the characters in the movie, but unlike most movie musical soundtracks, it doesn't feel overproduced or contrived. Instead it is a feeling as if you have happened to wander into a coffee shop jam session between a couple of singer/songwriters.

One track in particular is featured in the movie's trailer and is what really enticed me as a music lover to pick up this album (and since it's not available in India - purchase it off Amazon) - "Falling Slowly" is simplistic in its honesty and pared down guitar. It gives Hansard a chance to lay out his gravelly vocals. When he and Irglová come together on the chorus, well... brace yourself for that moment that comes along every one hundred songs or so when chills race down your arms and you are moved near to tears.

I love the Soundtrack in its entirety and also endorse the movie.

Free Music Review: How musical relationships really feel
Hit: 5 Stars

I see that I'm not the only person who came home from the film to order the soundtrack. What a lovely, beautifully made, spare and perfect little gem of a film. It brought back great memories for me of busking in the Paris Metro with my good friends Bartek, Mareck and Marcel, then going back to our apartments to jam and record into the night.

There is a kind of love shared between musicians who jam well together that is different than any other kind of love. It's a pure love of the music itself, that spills over into an upwelling of heartfelt appreciation for the people who made the music with you. The film captured this spirit perfectly.

The songs are by turns touching, sweet, funny, haunting, challenging and thought-provoking. Running like a golden thread through each song is the musicians' obvious love of music itself.

It's so exciting to "discover" musicians whose songs makes you want to grab your guitar and play along. If you like indie singer-songwriter music, I think you'll love this soundtrack.

Free Music Review: Stick-in-your-head songs
Hit: 5 Stars

We saw the film and ordered the soundtrack immediately thereafter. Some good features of the songs:
1. The CD only need be played once in a week; the other 6 days the listener hums, sings, or thinks the songs throughout the day.
2. The voices of the two singers are not at all alike, yet blend remarkably well.
3. The lyrics speak to adults and adult experience, unlike all of the snort-it/beat-it/screw-it music nowadays. Very much like country and western music before C&W became popular.
The only drawback, a minor one, is that Glen Hansard's voice seems to possess that unfortunate property shared by Neil Diamond and Phil Collins: despite being a perfectly fine singing voice, it is hard to listen to for extended periods. Someone on Earth must know what produces that effect. At any rate, the addition of the female lead serves to break up this effect and makes the entire CD an enjoyable and memorable listening experience.

Free Music Review: Can't wait for the movie to come out on DVD
Hit: 5 Stars

When you love a movie, you may be moved to buy the soundtrack for the good feelings it'll bring back, and with repetition you'll probably have several songs that become favorites. But this was an amazingly different experience - we had never heard any of the music before we saw this movie, but we both had the same reaction to it - "We MUST get the soundtrack!" True, we loved the movie, but it was the music that blew us away. Unless you're a hard core head banger, you're going to feel the same.

We were immediately fans of each very individual song, even though there are many types of music and moods represented - soft, loud, romantic, funny, rock, folk. The stars of the movie, Glen Hansard (leader of the hot Irish group, The Frames) and Marketa Irglova (a young musician/songwriter from Prague), have wonderful chemistry together as musicians and as actors. I hope they continue to work together - it's to the music lover's advantage.
