Free Music Notes for Once

Free Music Review: Gorgeous, understated, stays with you
Hit: 5 Stars

I loved this little film, and beyond that, the music. It's so much a part of the film that it's hard to separate. Luckily both are revelations -- intelligent, beautifully rendered, and emotional. The music is absolutely lovely -- folk/rock at its finest, and with a gentle bitter dryness that keeps it from being too sweet. The album is first-rate, the singing is beautiful (both singers offer sweet voices), and the song "Falling Slowly" haunted me, staying with me for days in all its bittersweet gorgeousness. I especially love the way Glen Hansard (of the Frames) takes so many of the higher harmonies, with Marketa taking the lower ones -- it adds an unexpectedness to the harmonies that always keeps you listening.

The album is a must for any who enjoy intelligent indie songwriting, folk/rock, or who are simply seeking something wonderful and evocative. And don't miss the movie.

Free Music Review: I rented the movie--I bought the soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

In all fairness, I may well decide to purchase the movie in addition. I'm not particularly a big fan of musicals or soundtracks, but "Once's" music was so organic to the plot of the film that it literally became another character--a brain child of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, as it were.

"Falling SlowlY" has received a lot of airplay, at least on my favorite station--KGSR in Austin, TX. The blend of Hansard's and Irglova's voices is particularly gorgeous on this song.

"The Hill" will break your heart.

Then there's "Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy" which may rival Peter Piper as a tongue twister. I can hear that one sung in an Irish bar, for sure.

Honestly, every track has its own merits and is well worth listening to. I doubt if I can see the movie once--and I'm certain many of these tracks will become frequent repeats.

Free Music Review: Beautiful Melodies and Profound Lyrics flourish on "Once"
Hit: 5 Stars

The songs are beautifully crafted with inspired intros that are followed by brilliant harmonies, but at the same time, gut wrenching. Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova complement each other well with his acoustic guitar playing and her piano virtuosity accompanied by their voices harmonizing to perfection. They create magical melodies on the soundtrack. Hansard is the lead singer of the Irish band the Frames, whose recent release The Cost is a must buy, and Irglova is a classically trained pianist. They previously collaborated last year on the album The Swell Season. Some of the songs from "Once" can be found there. There are additional songs too on "The Swell Season" that are equally as beautiful.

Free Music Review: Finally the Academy gets it right
Hit: 5 Stars

The movie was nicely done; a cute and gritty version of boy meets girl with a slightly sad and somewhat hopeful twist on the ending. I enjoyed it quite a bit though i had never even heard of it before pressing play on the DVD player.

I am NOT a musical guy at all, but this was so well done. The songs, all of them on the album, feel real and heartfelt. As Glen Hansard exhorted us to "Make art! Make art! Make art!" at the Academy Awards we get the feeling upon lisening tot he music that that is what he was after. A softer but equally emotional version of Jeff Buckley, the music carries a profound emotional appeal. I was grateful that the Academy in this case, did not reward that schlocky music from Enchantment with an award. I think it was a victory for indenpendent film and independent music, AND the music on the album is such that you can listen over and over.

Free Music Review: A Rough-Cut Diamond
Hit: 5 Stars

I heard the buzz about this movie a few months ago and decided to give it a shot. Halfway through the film, I knew I'd have to own this soundtrack or be haunted by snippets of these tunes running through my head.

"Once" is a great amalgam of music and story. With acoustic guitar and piano at their base, these are raw tunes, full of honesty and emotion rarely found on the radio. Most American producers would've felt obligated to add frills or extra verses, or more drums, or...anything to make things more commercial. By sticking to the bare bones of the songs, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova create rough-cut diamonds. There are five or six brilliant songs--okay, maybe seven or eight--and the rest are very good.

This is one soundtrack I can't stop listening to, and it is only enhanced by the textured simplicity of the movie. What a treat.
