Free Music Notes for Sex And The City: Music From the Original Motion PictureFree Music Review: Something for everyone. Hit: 4 Stars
Well, I haven't seen the movie, and have only ever watched 2 episodes of the series, thanks to my cousin Nnenna who was mad about it. My review, is thus based on listening to the Soundtrack alone, without being able to relate it to the movie. What piqued my interest was the Nina Simone remix, the Al Green song, and wondering what Jennifer Hudson would sound like.
The music is a mix of genres; Dance ("The look of love" by Nina Simone, very nicely done, and the ambient Chill out "I like the way" by Kaskade, with sparse lyrics), Hip hop/Pop ("Labels or love" by Fergie), Retro Soul (the upbeat horn sprinkled "All dressed in love" by Jennifer Hudson, sounding like something the Emotions would do, and the absolutely brilliant ballad "How can you mend a broken heart" by Al Green and Joss Stone), a few Covers ("How deep is your love" by The Bird & The Bee, "The heart of the matter" by India.Arie, originally featured on her last CD "Testimony Vol.1..."), and an oldie "Walk this way" by Run DMC & Aerosmith.
Other standouts are the dreamy horn sprinkled "Kissing" by Bliss, the piano laced R&B/Pop song "It's amazing" by Welsh songstress Jem, the Motown-sounding Pop song "All this beauty" by Folk/Pop group The Weepies, and another favourite of mine, the Punk rock of "New York girls" by Indie band Morningwood (sounds like something P!nk would do).
As one would imagine, most of the lyrics are about love, heartbreak, dressing up, make up, and other girlie things, mostly by female acts. However, there is no denying the top notch selection of the music.
Free Music Review: Excellent! Hit: 4 Stars
I purchased this CD after seeing "Sex and the City: The Movie" because I really enjoyed all of the music from the film. The songs on this CD really enhance the film in the same way music complemented the HBO series. Even if you aren't a fan of the TV show or movie, this album is a solid collection of songs that I think a lot of people (especially women) will enjoy. Fergie's "Labels of Love" is probably the most talked-about song on this CD, and it's probably my least favorite. I was very impressed with Jennifer Hudson's "All Dressed in Love," as well as the great cover versions of "How Deep is Your Love" and "The Heart of the Matter." Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis deliver a hauntingly beautiful version of "Auld Lang Syne," and the album, which overall is rather bittersweet, also includes Al Green's classic ballad, "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," but with a twist. Overall, I am very pleased with this CD, and I look forward to buying "Sex and the City: Music From the Original Motion Picture, Volume II," which will be available soon.
Free Music Review: Soundtrack is great fun just like the film! Hit: 4 Stars
This soundtrack is exactly the music I'd want with this film. It's full of pop fun with a lot of surprises! Before listening, I'd already heard good things about Fergie's "Labels or Love" and Jennifer Hudson's "All Dressed in Love". I was really pleasantly surprised with the rest of the album! Covers by India Arie and The Bird and the Bee are outstanding! Jem reviews their own track correctly with "It's Amazing". Joss Stone collaborates with Al Green. Plus the addition of Run DMC and Aerosmith to any soundtrack cannot be a bad thing! The soundtrack rocks. It's full of strong performances by strong women! Perfect for Sex And The City! If you love SATC, definitely check this one out.
Free Music Review: Worth Listening To Hit: 4 Stars
If you feel that "connection" with the whole Sex and the City franchise like I do, then it's worth buying the soundtrack to the movie. Just so you know, the first half of the album is fairly upbeat and easy to exercise or dance to....several songs have an 80's or disco feel to them. The second half of the album is more chill, and/or melancholy due to the slow tempo and sad lyrics of the songs. I was hoping for upbeat, fast, dance-y songs to be throughout the album, but this is not the case. All in all, a worthy album to buy and enjoy. I am glad I bought it! I'll probably by the companion album to this when it comes out!
Free Music Review: Worth the Wait? YES!!! Hit: 4 Stars
All the hype about the movie & the soundtrack did make me wonder if it would be worth it. I was expecting it to disappoint. I never was a HUGE fan of the show, so I believe I had a very open mind regarding the music.
It is very good. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because to me, nothing is perfect. There is always room for improvement.
If you are an avid fan of the show, you will LOVE this CD. The performance from Fergie & Jennifer Hudson to the covers of a few classic songs are great.
This CD is a welcome addition to any collection.
