Free Music Review: If Disney was the "mark", this definately hits it!
Hit: 5 Stars

Watching the film, it became obvious this was a labor of love for Jeffrey Katenberg, former Disney exec. The passion with which these events are told go beyond words. The movie behind this soundtrack has a transcendent quality missing from most recent Disney animated features. This same passion has carried over into the film's soundtrack. Ofcourse the orchestration, score, and songs achieve a production quality worthy of the world-class talent that is DreamWorks SKG. But what is truly remarkable, both in the feature film and this soundtrack, is that in this highly litigious and "politically correct" society, DreamWorks told this story as it is actually recorded in Scripture. How many Disney tales, like "Pocahontes", have thwarted the historically-correct for the revisionist politically-correct, only to be relegated to the ranks of "flash-in-the-pan" success upon initial release without having the substance to achieve lasting impact and become a true classic? (Disney calls everything it releases in animated format a "masterpiece." After "Hunchback", their use of "masterpiece" is a bit abused, but that's another issue. Sorry.) THE PRINCE OF EGYPT feature AND soundtrack is destined to the ranks of "classic" in my humble opinion. I have peculiar musical tastes (classical, choral, and well-produced contemporary)--so if it means anything, I'll say that I have listened to this soundtrack end-to-end, over-and-over again, all day long for over a week's duration at this writing (I work from my home, mostly). And I still have the desire to listen to this more. Again, words cannot describe the emotions and inspiration that are elicited when an historical event of the magnitude of a Biblical one, is told via the talents of the likes of DreamWorks SKG, with the honesty that allows the truth and power of such an event to unfold undiluted. RECOMMENDED: 5 STARS.

Free Music Review: Just got it...
Hit: 5 Stars

and I'm listening to it as I write this review. The score is smashing! Absolutely wonderful! If you've been to the website, you may have already downloaded some of the score, like me, and whetted your appetite for this lovely CD. It's so good that I have to give it 5 stars in spite of the fact that a couple of the songs are just weird. Moses' mother's song ("River Lullaby") is lovely, and I'm glad they decided to use some of the actors to sing (Ralph Fiennes and Michelle Pfeiffer) rather than having separate singing and speaking voices for everyone, but the Martin Short/Steve Martin song just doesn't go with the rest of the music, and I find the "lai-lai-lai" chorus of "Through Heaven's Eyes" just a little bizarre. Maybe it will work better in the movie. (The rest of "Heaven's Eyes" is quite good, though - love Brian Stokes Mitchell's voice!) "Deliver Us" and "The Plagues" are absolutely incredible. Wow! I'm totally psyched to hear them in the movie. "Death of the Firstborns" made me cry, even though it is sort of predictable (someone's dying, therefore we have a cello). Gorgeous. Oh - why did they think that it was necessary to put K-Ci and Jo-Jo in?! For all the hype about making this movie timeless, K-Ci and Jo-Jo are going to disappear within the next fifteen minutes (if we're lucky) and definitely NOT be around forever. I have to say - I had no idea Michelle Pfeiffer had such a powerful voice! Definitely get a copy of this, whether you go for the Nashville or Inspirational discs or not - the movie songs, with only a couple of exceptions, are just incredible.

Free Music Review: Powerful . . .Exciting. . .Sad. . .Joyful. . .Brilliant!
Hit: 5 Stars

My children and I loved the movie "The Prince of Egypt," due in part to this outstanding soundtrack. This music will move you in ways that will take you by surprise and make you shiver! All the songs are brilliantly written by Stephen Schwartz, and wonderfully performed for the film, but there are several standout tracks: "Deliver Us" combines the plight of the israelite slaves, who are waiting for release from bondage, with the sad yet hopeful lullaby of a mother (sung by the INCREDIBLE Ofra Haza) who gives up her child in hope of a better life for him. The middle eastern flavor of the melodies and the strong vocals make this a strong and moving song. Our hands-down favorite track is "When You Believe" (the version sung in the movie). This song will have you crying, laughing, praising and dancing! The hebrew prayer sung by children's voices build up to a blockbuster ending that still gives me chills each time I hear it. My choir is singing "When You Believe" this year, and I'll be lucky if I can sing it without crying. The score by Hans Zimmer is also very powerful.
Michelle Pfeiffer, Martin Short and Steve Martin do a nice job singing their characters' parts. The pop version of "When You Believe" sung by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston is done with an R&B twist; other stars on the soundtrack CD include Amy Grant and Boys II Men. Overall, the pop versions are merely interesting compared to the riveting songs and score from the actual film. Even if you have not seen the movie, this CD is well worth a listen, and likely to become a favorite!

Free Music Review: Superb Soundtrack by Super Singers
Hit: 5 Stars

The Prince of Egypt CD is perhaps the most wonderful movie music in at least a dozen years. This, the original version, is the best of the three different versions of the movie soundtract.

The quality of the songs and the vocals is outstanding. Mariah Carey gives one of her best singing performances ever. The quality of her singing was no doubt elevated by the presence of the greatest of female vocalists - 1. Ofra Haza, and 2. Whitney
Houston ...(in that order). I believe Ofra Haza did much to spread the music on this CD around the world by singing her three songs in many ( 26 ? ) different languages. Some of the other singers performed in multiple languages as well.

The soundtract stands up well on its own even without having first seen the movie. However, for a true and full appreciation of this soundtract, you must watch the movie. You will want to see the movie and listen to the soundtract more than once. The Prince of Egypt is NOT just a movie and music for children. The movie and the music are both major achievements, masterworks by a large group of dedicated professionals. Most children probably will not fully appreciate the depth and beauty of the music. It is worthy of many multiple listenings. When Ofra Haza with her soaring,
beautiful vocals sings "Deliver Us," that alone is worth the price of the CD. Steve Martin on "Playing With the Big Boys" is a gas. The Pince of Egypt CD is loaded with beautiful and inspiring music.

Free Music Review: An album to endure the ages
Hit: 5 Stars

A good way to measure a movie soundtrack is to see if it can survive without the movie. Too many movie soundtracks that sound good during the movie fall short when listened to on its own.

This, however, is not the case for The Prince of Egypt soundtrack.

The composer perfectly blends Middle Eastern hints into the traditional classical orchestra, making the listener feel in a different land. The four actors of the film who sang their own parts don't disappoint and the cover singers for the rest of the cast sound convincing. Of course, this album is worth the price just for having Ofra Haza's beautifully haunting voice.

It is easy to get the feel of the film when listening to the soundtrack, especially during the instrumental pieces. Listeners can feel the sense of urgency at the end of "The Reprimand" (#3), and the great sorrow between Moses and Rameses in "Goodbye Brother" (#6) and "Cry" (#10).

My only grievances with the album are that the music from the chariot race scene was not included and that "All I Ever Wanted" (#5) does not include the wall-painting dream sequence, which featured beautiful music.

My personal favorites are #s 3, 6, 8, and 10. I feel that this album would be very satisfying to fans of the film, of Hans Zimmer, and people who generally like Middle Eastern music. It certainly has not disappointed me in 7 years-and this was the first CD I ever bought.
