Free Music Notes for OpiumFree Music Review: You need to be drugged... Hit: 1 Stars...to listen to this, if you are a true music fan. However, I'm not sure it would completely earse the agony of his tiresome music and agonizingly mangled articulation.
I'd normally avoid even commenting on such music, as it is usually not worth my time, but this....whatever...claims to play "flamenco", so I shall rate it accordingly.
As a frame of reference, I shall compare it to truly good "new" Flamenco by the likes of Tomatito, Paco De Lucia, Vincente Amigo and Gerardo Nunez.
This is utter....utter....UTTER garbage. He has no technique. He has no compas. He does not play Flamenco forms and, it is clear that he he ever tried, he would suck monumentally. The music doesn't even resemble Flamenco! He should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission for deceptive trading.
His "influences" seem to be born more of ignorant cultural steroetypes rather than real understanding of music. This is no surprise coming from one who describes his music as "Flamenco" simply because it has a nylon guitar and uses the Phrygian mode.
And people who claim this is Flamenco are just ignorant. Sorry, that's what you get for talking about something of which you know nothing. If you want to learn, search for Paco De Lucia here on Amazon and listen to the available samples.
I might be willing to let it go if there was any artistic merit in his music, but there is none. We have pedestrian, repetitive "hey, look I've just learned to play guitar" garbage. Seriously: this guy is amateur in the extreme. You can hear infinitely better stuff in a cheap piano bar. Across his entire career, I can detect no appreciable improvment in his technique, which might have at least denoted some integrity. Instead, here's the same lame technique and amateurish riffs we heard in his first outing.
As a guitarist, I've played some pieces by Paco, but if I'm ever asked "Have you played any Liebert", my response shall be "No, but I think I may have stepped in some once".
This gets one star simply because Amazon doesn't allow me to give a score of zero.
Footnote: Some may note that my reviews for Ottmar's albums are strikingly similar to each other. Well, that's an indication of how consistently bad his material is. And yes, I forced myself to listen to this rubbish, so this is a fair review.
Free Music Review: Ottmar Liebert Hit: 5 StarsI am replacing some of my classic albums (cassette)with CDs - this was a major item and it met my expectations.

This CD is more Eastern (Asia, India, Himalayas, etc.) than Southwestern, but don't let that stop you. Buy it, love it, enjoy it, it's one of a literal handful of CDs that I would NOT be without, in my life.
Free Music Review: A Magificent Piece of Art Hit: 5 StarsHaving Been a fan for flamenco and spanish guitar music and having listened to various top notch artists, I had always ranked Ottmar Liebert as an inspiring soul. His music has its own distinct flavor. 'Ambitious' is what I would use to describe Libert's music in general. This album ,however, is different. It's the piece of work that defines Ottmar Liebert. Listening to this album transforms you to a different level of alertness. A level at which you're a step closer to being in a peaceful dream yet can still reflect on reality. It has a sedating, soothing edge to it. A rather "narcotizing" effect .. such is the magic of "OPIUM" !
