Free Music Review: A Breath of Fresh Air - Emotional, Fulfilling Album

The past two years in music have largely been dominated by various styles of rock--a long-awaited relief from the pop music scene for rock fans like me. One of the best rock albums to come out in the past two years is Gravity, the fifth CD from Canadian rock group Our Lady Peace. Released June 18, 2002, its ten tracks are filled with emotion, raw energy, and self-examination. This conglomeration of creative songs leads many OLP fans to consider Gravity as the band's best record to date. The first track, "All For You," begins with a haunting keyboard melody that soon develops into an aggressive rock song with the entering of Steve Mazur's powerful Gibson Les Paul guitar. Its lyrics disclose a sense of regret and angst towards some person. The next song, the driving "Do You Like It," has the potential to be a successful single. Singer Raine Maida's lyrics seem to describe feelings of self-regret but simultaneously a sentiment of renewal. In the bridge, Maida confesses "I just want to get it out...waiting to exist," conveying a sense of yearning for a better life. The album's first single and third track, "Somewhere Out There," with its mellow verses and arena-rock chorus, may the best candidate for the "perfect song" in recent memory, if there is one. It seems as if Maida is reminiscing about previous times with a now-deceased friend. The most emotional song on Gravity is likely its second single, "Innocent," which describes the frustrations of being a teenager and growing up with aspirations. The fifth track, "Made of Steel," is a song Maida gives his inspiration and support while he sings, "hold your head high, don't look down." The next song, "Not Enough," features slow-paced and rather depressing verses as well as powerful choruses filled with angst. It also features perhaps the best bridge ever, with its offbeat crunchy guitar tones paired with Maida's forceful regrets, that all lead up to a sorrowful solo. The seventh track is the soulful (no pun intended) "Sell My Soul," in which Maida sings, "hold on, I need to know I feel," showing his need for self-reflection. "Sorry," in my opinion, should be the next single because of its melodic hooks and the recurring themes of regretting the past and starting over again. In it, Maida sings, "I'm sorry...I've been blind...but I've opened up my eyes." The ninth track, "Bring Back the Sun," is the softest and longest song on the album, in which Maida wishes for a better time and place than now. The last song, "A Story About a Girl," is similar to "Innocent" in its support of kids struggling to mature and adjust to new situations. Its most truthful lyric is when Maida sings, "this is not some paradise; it's just where we live."
Our Lady Peace's Gravity, in my opinion, is easily the best rock album of the year because it is full of meaningful songs that have great tunes and themes. Plus, some of the songs just rock, courtesy of Mazur's Les Paul. It is a slight departure from OLP's previous recordings, but it remains true to the band's sound and style. I would recommend this album to any fan of good music, especially rock & roll.
