Free Music Notes for GravityFree Music Review: Very Impressive! Hit: 5 Stars
To be honest I didn't know what to expect from this album. I was hoping to hear more of Raine's powerful vocals, but none-the-less this album is Great! Though I'm a little disapointed. Now that the band took more mainstream type sound, a lot of pop-junkies are gonna start eating it up because it sounds good, not because it IS good! Our Lady Peace may be labeled as sell-outs, or whatever else because of their new change, but if you look back at their history... Their sound is so unique, but you exactly give them their own genre, because the sound keeps changing. That's one of the reason's this band is so great. The music is always fresh. Even tough they have taken on newer grasp of their music, they still have that same touch! They still have 3 most important aspects of great music... Great lyrics, melodies, and harmonics (and some!), which can be hard to keep up with! Regardless of what anyone else says, Our Lady Peace have proved once again that they can with stand todays music. Especially with their dangerously brilliant (& unique) melodies that you can't get out of your head! It's too bad that some of the older fans are going to have a hard time appreciating this album. Talk about under-appreciated bands... even by their own fans! Over all... I guess I was pretty impressed!
Free Music Review: Some awesome songs, one mediocre. Hit: 5 Stars
I'll say first of all that one of the songs is weak. I don't think "Made of Steel" is that good, myself. But that is made up for by "Somewhere Out There," "Not Enough", "Bring Back the Sun," and one of the best 2 or 3 songs I've heard in my 19 years, "Story About a Girl." The album's much more down-to-earth, as has been said many times, than previous ones. The underlying theme seems to be (as I interpret) the relationship between Raine Maida and his wife, Chantal Kreviazuk. His love for her seems most potently manifest in "Not Enough" and "Story About a Girl." My radio-picks (besides Somewhere Out There) are "Not Enough" and "All For You", two hard-hitting alt-rock songs that'll definitely get attention. The album also has good stage-presence. Not that stage presence stands out on an album (and I haven't seen OLP live since 5.23.01, long before Gravity) but as a performer myself (spoken-word poet) I can tell that many songs on this album have the potential to command enormous stage charisma. All in all, this is a great album, and it lived up to my expectations, even after the awesome "Spiritual Machines". Skip past track 5 on this one and you'll be fine.
Free Music Review: Uplifting Gravity Hit: 5 Stars
This new CD from Our Lady Peace is just another example of how this band never ceases to amaze me. First of all there's the honest lyrics of Raine Maida, the moving bass riffs of Duncan Coutts, the kicking drum beats of Jeremy Taggart, and the screaming guitar of Steve Mazur! It starts off with a rocking song like "All For You", which is the perfect song you want to sing along with while driving. The first single on this CD "Somewhere Out There" is a song I think many of us can relate to; that feeling that somewhere out there is the person for you, and sometimes they can be very close but seem so far away. "Innocent" is a wonderful song that I know everyone can relate to because we are all innocent at one point in time, but like the song says "one day you'll stand up on your own". Song number six, "Not Enough" has guitar parts that are just so gorgeous to lisen to, and what I really like about this song is how it starts slow but totally catches you off guard at the end. The CD ends with "Story About a Girl", which is one of my favorites on the CD because you can't help but dance to it, and again the guitar on this song just rocks!! Listening to this CD just makes you feel so good!
Free Music Review: Groundbreaking Album! Hit: 5 Stars
As a fan of OLP for more years than I can remember, I can honestly say that they only get better with time. Produced by Bob Rock, Gravity, the first album recorded without guitarist Mike Turner, is a departure from the usual "sound" of OLP. This album truly highlights Raine Maida's vocals; he sings at a much lower range than before and the result is awesome. I am sure that his vocal cords are equally thrilled. Some fans of OLP have expressed disappointment because this album sounds "different" and is a "departure" from Naveed. EXACTLY. Our Lady Peace has grown and has a newer sound. Not only is it more appealing to a wider crowd, but for the FIRST time, they are getting serious air time with "Somewhere Out There" on American radio. We should be proud that this band has the ability to have such a range of style and appeal to so many people. It is about time that more people are exposed to this awesome band. Personally, I do agree that this album is not as "upbeat" perhaps as others, but it is the PERFECT album to listen to if you have just broken up with someone. The range of emotion from utter depression to anger was the perfect medicine... Just remember, "We are, we are all innocent." ...
