Free Music Review: Bringing Back the Sun
Hit: 5 Stars

After a recent jaunt to Hawaii at the end of 2001 and early 2002, Canadian quartet Our Lady Peace have returned to the mainland blazing with their 5th album entitled "Gravity." Within this new masterpiece, it is quite evident that the band has radically changed their sound, for the better no less. Gone are the overly layered music, annoying jibberish choruses, and ambiguously written lyrics. Present are simplier and yet honest lyrics that invite the listener into the world that singer Raine Maida sees. The melodies on "Gravity" are infectious and memorable. Raine Maida, along with drummer Jeremy Taggart, bassist Duncan Coutts and newly recuited guitarist Steve Mazur round out this fabulous foursome. Standouts on this album include "Bring Back the Sun," "Innocent," "Story About A Girl" and their first single "Somewhere Out There." Through Our Lady Peace's direct and inviting approach on this album, they are surely bringing back the sun to the dark and dreary days faced by legions of disappointed modern rock and alternative fans.

Free Music Review: Always will be close to me
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm a big music fan in general, so it's hard for anything to be labeled 'bad' to me. Music is about creativity. Such genre stipulations and dichotomies don't exist to me. Duke Ellington said that there were only two types of music, good and bad; and that's the way it should be.

This album is very good, I think. It's rockier than older OLP stuff(although I like that just as much), and I also think more heartfelt.

This album will hold a very special place in my mind always, because of who introduced it to me, and when. It's one of those albums that belong in the 'Hall Of Fame' in my mind, just because of its association to that timeframe of my life.

Anyway, Innocent is a highly underrated song. I think it's the best one on the album--probably their best song ever, actually. It's got a good rock sound, with soulful singing, and beautiful lyrics. That's a good formula for me, generally, and it definitely works here. I highly recommend this album to anyone that misses the 90's rock scene(a la Toad The Wet Sprocket or Soul Asylum).

Free Music Review: this is a tough one
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been a huge our lady peace fan ever since naveed came out. I enjoyed their style of music on their four previous CDs being "Naveed", "Clumsy", "Happiness is not a fish that you can catch", and "Spiritual Machines". Arnold Lanni was a great producer, and they were so good with him. Also, Guitarist Mike Turner left the band, which put them in a tough situation because he was so good and he made the music so interesting. I disagree with the fact that they used Bob Rock, and i don't like the mainstream stuff as much as the old stuff.

HOWEVER,

Our Lady Peace was still able to make a really good CD even though they faced a series of bumps in the road. I am also really happy that they finally achieved success in the U.S, because i have been wanting that for years. Now people know what they see when they look at my CD case (which is nice). I still think that the CD is great even though it is different, but since the other CD were about 10 stars on a 5 star scale, this one deserves a 5. buy the CD. Its worth the money

Free Music Review: don't judge just because it's different
Hit: 5 Stars

I've seen a lot of mixed reviews for Gravity, but after listening carefully to each and every CD of theirs I have and thinking, but most of all seeing them live, i have come to my own conclusion. I don't understand why everyone's freaking out because there's a different sound to it. In my opinion, there is still that abstract, unexplainable inert element that makes it undeniably Our Lady Peace. Art, after all, is more for the artist than the audience, and as long as they like what they're doing, good for them. True, my first impression was that the slightly american-ized new sound and the clear picture of the band on the cover had them headed down the perilous road of being sell-outs, but that's not so. If they start writing music solely to please a wide fan base, then they've sold out. But as it stands, having five CDs, each with an individual sound, but something in common, is great. Somewhere Out There is a good song, as long as it's not overplayed. Actually, this whole album is good. Besides, Spiritual Machines is a tough act to follow.

Free Music Review: harsh critics need to chill out
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a fan of OLP every since I saw them live with Thrid Eye Blind and Eve 6 back in 98. After witnessing them perform live I went out and bought Naveed and Clumsy right away. These guys blew me away! At that point I had seen: Aerosmith, Metallica, and my favorite band at the time Third Eye Blind perform, but this was the best show ever! So naturally I became hooked on "clumsy" and "naveed". Then Happiness...came I was severely dissapointed, but it as well as "spiritual machines" grew on me and became heavy rotation in my stereo. "Gravity" I thought would be another album I would have to listen to again and again to accept for not being "clumsy", however I can't quit listening to it. "Somewhere out there" is my favorite track since "4 a.m." The fact that someone can claim that these guys are in a league with Nickelback or Creed is obsurd. If you were a "true" fan you could spot that this is their best work since "clumsy" duh........
