Free Music Notes for Healthy in Paranoid TimesFree Music Review: Raine...Raine...Raine... Hit: 2 Stars
This CD isn't terrible, instead it is a terrible waste of talent. Raine Maida has one of the best voices in modern rock. Unfortunately he forgot to bring it to the recording sessions. His vocals usually soar with the support of some clever guitar riffs. This disc is chock full of the riffs, but lacks the vocals. The only exception to this is "Angels Losing Sleep". This is an amazing track which opens the cd with a bang. After completing the disc, though, you find that the track is horribly misplaced and belongs on one of their better, previous discs. It is not like this disc is terrible (I mean I did give it two stars, not one), but rather I feel as though it is a waste of talent. Let's use this as a learning experience for next time boys.
Free Music Review: The worst OLP album ever! Hit: 2 Stars
Ok maybe I just need to get used to it, but honestly, think of the worst OLP songs on any of their previous CDs and put them onto one album - what do you get? - Healthy in Paranoid Times. I disagree that it sounds like their early CDs. Naveed and Clumsy are their best albums, this does not rank with those two CDs. Despite that there are a couple songs which are gems on this album, namely : single "Where are You" and "Will the Future Blame Us". I would recommend listening to a good portion of this CD before deciding to buy it. Do not expect typical OLP.
Free Music Review: Harmless Music Hit: 2 Stars
If you enjoy safe, upbeat, slightly catchy, unadventurous, clean, structured, U2-ish, amusing, radio-friendly, alternative rock, then this is your ticket. Oh, how you'll love this one. It's even better than their previous album, Gravity (although that is no feat). On the other hand, move along if you like interesting music that strays from conventional song structures in the slightest.
Free Music Review: CD contains DRM software that opens your system to viruses Hit: 1 Stars
As many people may know by now, Sony was recently caught with egg on their face when a security specialist found out that a recently purchased CD (Van Zant: Get Right With The Man) from Sony music not only installed DRM software (digital rights management, to limit and outright prevent copying music to certain devices), but it did so in such a sneaky way that it hid itself entirely from Windows, and opened the system up to security issues such as viruses.
This CD has the same copyright protection, called XCP. When installed, Sony hijacks your computer and installs custom software which:
1) Hides itself entirely from Windows by installing as a rootkit
2) Hides itself in such a manner that any files begining with $sys$ are also hidden. For example, if you install the XCP copy protection software on your machine, and rename "document.doc" to "$sys$document.doc" it then becomes invivisble to you forever.
3) Installs its own custom CD-Rom drivers to hijack your system. It also sneakily names these drivers "Plug and Play Device Manager" to seem as if it's a part of Windows. Trying to delete these drivers manually will disable your CD-Rom drive entirely.
4) Offers no uninstall option until you manually contact Sony
As of my writing this review, Sony has "apologized" for this incident, and claims they will "re-evaluate" this copyright protection software on their CDs in the future.
In the meantime, a virus is currently running wild, which names itself begining with $sys$ in an attempt to hide from the user and virus scanners.
Several class action lawsuits are also pending against Sony right now.
In summary, as you can tell from above, Sony's actions here are absolutely horrible. This is your music. You purchased it, and they should not have any right to dictate how you can use it, let alone install software which compromises your system security.
This is one of the CDs with Sony's XCP copyright protection software on it, and as a result, you should not buy it to send a message to Sony that this will NOT be tolerated in the future.
Free Music Review: 43 songs, 6,000 gig of hard drive space, 3 years, and one disappointed OLP fan Hit: 1 Stars
Let me preface my review by saying I give it one star compared to everything OLP has put out prior and not compared to the horrid music shoved down our throats by the music channels and record labels of the world. I think what we're seeing in "...Paranoid Times" is a band at a definite crossroad. To think that it took 43 songs, 6,000 gig of hard drive space, and 3 years to produce these 12 songs give us fans a slight indication musically the band might have lost direction and exactly where they wanted to take this thing. Jeremy says it himself in the dual disc how the band could have broke up several times during the making of this disc. "Gravity" was not an OLP Disc in my opinion, but did welcome a whole new fan base to the band, which otherwise might have ignored them, especially in the States. I think this disc will not only disappoint the "Gravity" nu-metal fans as well as disappoint us longstanding fans of their previous work. Sure there are moments, "Angels/Losing/Sleep", "Boy", and "Al Gemina", but I believe they could have taken these songs a bit further artistically. In "Boy", why not fade the song out and come back with it in a reprise fashion, letting Raine wail and improv over the lengthened ending a la Bono. "Al Gemina" is a great start to a song, but should have been finished off and not stopped at a mere 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Raine, spill your guts and emotions about your experiences in Iraq like you've done about other topics in previous discs. In the end, I think what it might boil down to is Steve just isn't quite as artistic with the 6 string as Mike Turner was, causing this end product to suffer musically. Final words that come to mind after several listens: flat, bland, generic, and in the end not a goosebump to be seen on the fans of OLP everywhere. I guess we've been spoiled and blessed by their previous work and pray the Peace find themselves in the near future. "Bring Back the Sun", the "Blister", the "4 am", the "Hope", the "Are You Sad" and most importantly the emotion. [...]
