Free Music Notes for Healthy in Paranoid TimesFree Music Review: Sad excuse for copy protection: CD review ONLY Hit: 1 Stars
I purchased this album with the sole intent of putting it on my iPod. When I got home, and attempted to rip the album using Windows Media Player, it did not even recognize the CD on either of my two DVD drives. It did not work on another computer in the house as well. iTunes was equally unable to acknowledge the existence of this album. I resorted to installing the Music Player software that came on the CD.
As soon as I restarted my computer because of the new software, Media Player recognized the CD, as well as iTunes. The Music Player that I had just installed did not. Not that I minded, the software looked like it had no functionality what-so-ever, as a previous reviewer commented on. I found out that this is a confirmed problem brought about by installing Windows Security Update Program MS04-032 (KB840987)
The whole idea for this copy protection is preposterous. There is no excuse for the limitations they place on this album. This will not stop any piracy, it only makes it harder for legitimate listeners to listen to music on their own terms. I don't listen to CDs anymore. Every album I purchase, note the word "purchase", is automatically placed on my iPod.
Please do not read this as a review of the music. I haven't even listened to the music yet. I like Our Lady Peace enough to have faith that their music will make up for the experience of trying to find a way to put it on my iPod. I am just reviewing the disc itself, you either like Our Lady Peace or you don't, and I bet everyone here is aquainted with the nice saying about anatomy and opinions.
I wonder if the claimed incompatibilities with the software have anything to do with Sony, Apple, and their corresponding portable MP3 player market shares.
Free Music Review: WARNING: this album will install a virus on your computer Hit: 1 Stars
The cd will install this virus called a "rootkit" on your computer: [...]
The copy-protection software on this album dangerously installs programs that run automatically and intentionally hide themselves.
Just putting the cd in my computer unwittingly installed some software. It starts a service called "XCP CD Proxy" and caused my computer to hide folders and files starting with a dollar sign. It also installed and hid files in windows\system32\$sys$filesystem directory and automatically runs a file named $sys$DRMServer.exe, which sucks system resources even when the cd isn't playing AND THERE IS NO UNINSTALLER.
For some excellent research on this rootkit, check out this page: http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/sony-rootkits-and-digital-rights.html
Oh, the music is alright, but low by Our Lady Peace standards. For a far superior album, try Spiritual Machines.
Free Music Review: Infected with a virus!!!! Hit: 1 Stars
Sony's DRM (Digital Rights Management) copy protection software is installed upon insertion of this "audio" cd into your computer. The software is malicious and can ruin your pc to the point of having to format and reinstall everything. This software also sends information about your pc to a Sony server. Do you want Sony to have ALL your information? The so called "patch" that Sony makes available to fix this software does nothing! The software also allows for virus, spyware, and other malicious programs to hide themselves and operate without detection. Currently there are no virus scanners (Norton, Mcafee, etc.) that can detect this software or the viruses it can help hide. The same goes for spyware.
Free Music Review: Disappointing, to say the least... Hit: 1 Stars
I tried copying this CD, not knowing that it was protected. So, I ripped it to my hard-drive and burned it. But, when I inserted the burned copy into my computer, the screen froze for a while, and an installer icon appeared on the taskbar in the bottom right. It installed somthing - and now I cannot burn anything, with any program. I've even tried using a different, external CD burner. A disk error comes up during burning, even if I am not not burning audio CDs.
This was not a fluke. I've talked to other people this has happened to. Avoid anything with "copy protection." Sony might as well burn viruses onto the CDs they distribute.
Free Music Review: Never thought I'd hate an OLP CD! Hit: 1 Stars
But I do. This CD is horrible. I have bought every one of their cd's, gone to their live shows (3 times), and even liked the much hated Gravity CD. But this thing is just awful. Ive tried to like it, ive listened to it at least 10 times, and it just wont stick. The songs are boring, the hooks are lame, the guitars basic, its just the most plain jane olp cd ever. This may be my last OLP purchase. Oh well, spiritual machines still sounds good...
