BEST OF THE OUTLAWS: GREEN GRASS AND HIGH TIDES is the ultimate Outlaws anthology. Sure, I like many other hard rock, classic rock, adult alternative, Southern rock, jam, Heartland rock, and power pop artists, but the Outlaws take the pizza for being the best. All of the songs here are major guitar showcases for the band, and there are so many musical details here that it takes a lifetime of listening to pick everything up fully. Moreover, the remastering is warm, crisp, and thick, especially for 1996. Past and present members' advocacies of efforts to free people unjustly imprisoned in foreign countries, capital punishment for aggravated kidnapping and committing sadistic acts, police use of deadly force to rescue two girls kidnapped in California in 2002 (as well as praising the courage of both girls in defending themselves and the bravery of the police who rescued them), increased funding for law enforcement, high school community-service requirements, and major federal crackdowns on polygamy and privately-run "boot camps" for troubled youth make this or any other Outlaws CD/cassette an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience. I know the Outlaws are releasing a new CD or two in 2011, so do the right thing, and buy any new Outlaws product when it comes out.

Though supremely competent, the band is completely indistinguishable in both style and substance from earlier and better known acts of southern rock's golden age: Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Green Grass & High Tides culls 16 tracks from the five studio albums the Outlaws recorded between 1975 and 1980, including their two minor hits, "There Goes Another Love Song" and "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky."
