Free Music Review: A Beautiful Piece of Heartache

Not this time. I borrowed "Good Dog, Bad Dog" at Alyssa's continuous insistence, and I loved it so much I refused to give it back. Then she STOLE it back, so I made a copy. Then I bought my own copy, two in fact: one for the car, one for the house. THEN I started buying copies for other people as gifts. The next thing I know, I'm doing covers of "Poughkeepsie" at open mic nights and putting "Faithfully Dangerous" on mixed tapes to send to guys I'm hot for. Yes, the album is THAT GOOD.

Linford is a true poet lyricist, as in better than Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows (this is high praise coming from me, a confirmed Duritz acolyte). He uses actual pump organs and keyboards and pianos to create music to make the beast in me weep and the child in me sing and dance. Karen's vocals....well. She sings like an angel and puts me to shame. She makes Fiona Apple look like a hack. There are torch songs to make you blush and think of the first person who ever made your knees watery. Sad songs that lighten your load instead of add to it. Little stories to make you smile. Contemplative melodies that make you wonder about where you've been and where your going. And just for fun...a few dance numbers.

The apporach is eclectic; a little rock, a little gospel, a little honest to god Appalachia folk, with shades of Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, and KD Lang for seasoning. Truly, there's nothing quite like it, this Good Dog is the best of its breed.

To add to this, Karen and Linford are really, truly lovely people. Linford actually gave me a big hug of consolation when I was crying at a show over a breakup, let me get tears on his nice yellow shirt...how many people, let alone musicians, would do that for an almost total stranger? Their shows are like family reunions (for four hundred or so of your closest friends), and they always make time for a word or two to thier fans afterword, always ready with a kind word, a compliment, a wry joke or two. Since touring with the Cowboy Junkies, their following is growing exponentially, and I can't think of more deserving people.

So, as your friend, I'm telling you. You gotta listen to this album, man, it's awesome. I oughta know.
