Free Music Notes for The Trumpet ChildFree Music Review: Tijdloos, warm en rijp Hit: 5 Stars
Sprekend over This Next: Karen Bergquist en Linford Detweiler aka Over The Rhine zijn 21 augustus terug met Trumpet Child, en hoe: "I don't wanna waste your time with music you don't need" opent met een heuse brass sectie. Jazzy (Trouble), shuffle (I'm on a roll). Absoluut nuttige, opbouwende muziek.
Free Music Review: Finally! Something I can sink my teeth into Hit: 5 Stars
For years I wanted to like this band. I felt they possessed true potential so I dutifully obtained their first five cds and was repeatedly struck with a sense of disappointment. So for the next 10 years I ignored them. Upon reading an interesting and provoking review in 'Christianity Today' I decided to give them one more try. 2007 saw this Ohio-based outfit retool and revamp to the unveiling of their most creative and dynamic work ever. Imagine flourishes of Tom Waits, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Paris Combo and Billie Holliday invading OtR's arty brand of acoustic- based alterna-pop. Bergquist's voice has reached a level of maturity and command not found on earlier recordings and Detweiler's scope of songwriting has blossomed to include tango, swing and assorted other clever manifestations of art pop. Probably the most surprising release of '07 and along with Arcade Fire's 'Neon Bible' and Runrig's 'Everything you See' ranks among the top two or three albums of the year.
Free Music Review: Awesome Music to the Ears of A New Fan Hit: 5 Stars
I have a part time job moonlighting at my local Starbucks. First of all, kudos to Starbucks for creating such awesome playlists with such awesome artists. Because of these playlists, I've discovered such awesome artists as k-os and Morcheeba among others. So as I was working one night, I heard this beautifully haunting song playing. I ran to the back to see who it was.
Over The Rhine, "Nothing Is Innocent".
I had to find the album. I snatched it up at my local Best Buy. And I must say, I am amazed.
This is the first album I've ever heard from OtR. Seeing some reviews, it looks like this is a departure from their usual sound? That sucks. But I'm in the oppostie direction. Old fans want more of the old sound. This new fan wants more of the new sound.
Maybe with future releases, we can all meet in the middle?
Free Music Review: A little bit different, but a whole lot of fun... Hit: 5 Stars
Other reviewers are correct that this album moves in a somewhat different direction from their previous work. The solid songwriting is still present - it's just painted upon a more upbeat, jazzy canvas. I am surprised by the negative reviews of this album - from reading them, however, it is clear that some fans want OtR to put out albums that all sound exactly like Ohio. I think that this departure on The Trumpet Child is a great addition to the OtR catalog.
I also believe that this is some of Karin's best vocal work. Her voice is confident, smoky, and beautiful. This is also the most upbeat album - I played it during a small party and every person was tapping their toes to the beat. Give The Trumpet Child a listen before believing the negative reviews - it's simply a great album.
Free Music Review: More Fun from OTR Hit: 5 Stars
Over the Rhine adds to their legacy with a Grammy quality CD. Karin's swooning, ad-libbing gets better with each CD. The depth of this CD is tremendous with outstanding backing musicians and mixing. If the opening song, sounding like Desperado seems a little cheesy as does the songs title, just wait until the second song "Trouble"; this song is as good as OTR (or anybody for that matter) gets! If you liked Linford singing to Jack's Valentine, you're in for another treat with a fun tribute to Tom Waits "Don't Wait for Tom". Ending with "If a Song Could be President" Karin singing 'Emmy Lou for Ambassador, World leaders would listen to her' is tongue-in-check funny!
